Well after much hard work on the computer and about 400 emails later, house redecorated and throughly spring-cleaned, we finally boarded our flight out of Perth in Western Australia to our stopover location to England in Hong Kong. Having previously been allowed thru Checkin at the airport with up to 32 kg on all previous long distance flights, we had been more careful and packed to only 27 kg to be on the safe side, but still acquired a fee of $110 each for being 2 kg overweight - it just gets sillier. A long flight but acceptable as we had booked an aisle seat and a window seat, leaving a gap inbetween which worked - we got a spare seat between us for extra comfort. Arrived in Hong Kong tired and crumpled and caught taxi ... read more

The serious business of counting down the days until we leave has now begun in earnest, with this time next week being d-day for flying out of the UK to start our trip in Bangkok. Our final weeks at work have been relatively relaxed affairs, speak for yourself Matt, I've had loads to do and your weeks at work are always relaxed affairs unlike mine, and promise to continue in this vain for the remaining two days of 9-5 life, before spending our final few pre-trip days in Leicester and Birmingham saying goodbye to assorted relatives and enduring many hours worrying about what the hell we’re doing. People’s current question when they meet us is “are you getting excited yet?” … and I would dearly love to give a resoundingly positive answer, but the truth of ... read more

Hi Everyone! With less than a week to go until we embark on our trip things are getting a little frantic! Myself and Jud only got our Indian Visa's last week with a lot of faffing about in the visa application centre in Birmingham. At the moment it's just a case of getting together all of our kit and buying last minute essentials. Just to let everyone know we will be having a bit of a farewell thing this Thursday in Hinckley; so feel free to come and say good bye (and buy us a few drinks!). I will write again before we leave on sunday, Jack x... read more

The nerves and excitement are starting to kick in. The only things I can think about are sex and travel....in that order. Ner seriously I am sorting out all the boring mundane stuff like travel insurance and making sure I dont forget anything crucial. Having a big purge of worldly possessions too, quite liberating really....after all it is just stuff. I'll be coming back to no job, no fixed abode, and probably very little money.....so the dole, mum's spare room, and free entertainment are gonna be the name of the game. I'm hoping it will all be worth it. Sure it will!... read more

It's football day. We start the day with Absinth and sprite, Bowz helped polish off the bottle of Bundy so you can imagine the state. Walking to Emeriates Stadium it's crazy - people everywhere, singing, drinking, red shirts and some Rangers Blue. Bowz is like a kid at Christmas, he's so excited he's almost bursting everytime he looks at me smiling. Seats are great - up high but behind the goals and the stadium design is amazing, we can see everything and feel as if we're about 50m closer to the ground than we are. Two games of football down, with the home team winning in the dying minutes the crowd was ecstatic. Hit a club in Camden that night - well a club that plays music you can sing along to - but we had ... read more

Well, today was a pretty relaxing day for us here. We were supposed to visit Woolsthorpe Manor nearby (birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton) but we changed our minds at the last minute. It looked pretty small and we figured we'd be through it in less than half an hour so we hit the grocery store instead for last minute supplies and some supplies for the family who lives here and then home to do some house cleaning (the only down-side to a house swap is there is no maid service....). Also, in the morning, we had a visit from the lady and her daughter who we had tried to meet up with yesterday in Nottingham but had failed. Her daughter is 9 and the 3 kids played together so well. We sat and had tea for ... read more

Today was off to Coalville (well, near it) and a place called Snibston. Russell asked "Why is it called Snibston?" I told him I bet they had a contest to see who could come up with the most ridiculous name possible and it won. Snibston is a discovery centre with tons of hands-on exhibits about science and mining (this is pretty big part of it since it is a mining town) and engines and water power and on and on and on. They got to lift a mini (car) off the ground using a pulley system and a giant magnet. The kids had a blast and Nigel and Lori got to see some really interesting exhibits while the kids were busy. The day was cloudy but didn't rain! There was also an outdoor component to Snibston ... read more
