Decisions. Decisions. We had just been to the North East for the Outlaw's milestone birthday, but the prospect of back to back home games - Saturday and Tuesday - was quite tempting. The continued wet December could scupper the idea - those in the know realise that despite recent drainage improvements, waterlogging is never very far off the radar. However, the statement by the Northern Premier League put paid to any wavering. Both games were postponed. It was nothing to do with water, although I suspect that the Saturday would have been anyway. No, financial infringements were at play. The "real" MUFC and their precarious monetary position were deemed to have broken League regulations - correctly it would appear, I might add - and the playing licence was withdrawn. The price of salvation? Guarantees of £120,000 ... read more

In the second half of 2022 and the first half of 2023, I spent a few weeks at retreat centres in the UK for retreats and for volunteering, divided into three trips. The first one was a three-week trip in August and September 2022, and I participated in a one-week retreat at Adhisthana in Herefordshire, followed by a guest stay at the same centre, and then a ten-day retreat at Taraloka in Shropshire, Wales; the second one was a three-week volunteering assignment at Adhisthana in November and December 2022; and the third one was a on a ten-day retreat at Taraloka where I was on the team supporting the retreat leaders. Part 1: Retreats at Adhisthana and Taraloka I arrived at Colwall train station in the early afternoon of the 26th of August, after having travelled ... read more

So, how did it happen that our last stop in the UK was Hemel Hempstead? Well, one of our blog entries triggered friends that we had made quite a few years ago while in Chatham with Tsamaya to make contact. My blog post mentioned we were going to St. Albans which is close to where they live. Unfortunately, I had to inform Martin that my blog post is never quite up to date as it takes me some time to pull them together before posting. In my response I happened to mention our tentative plans and that we were actually looking for a place to stay for a few days at the end of August to try to get a full 2 months away from Turkey. Why did we want to do that? It actually would ... read more

Herefordshire. The masses on the M5 plough on regardless. To the perfect stone villages of Cotswolds. To the rugged beauty of Devon and Cornwall. To other places far and wide. Herefordshire is largely overlooked by the masses, which is part of the appeal. A patchwork of small towns criss crosses the big sky landscapes and hidden within lie some of the prettiest villages to be found anywhere in England. We skirted Birmingham and headed for the road less travelled. Progress was slow. Painfully slow. The roads are not geared to rushing. It wasn't helped by a convoy of old gypsy caravans, clogging up the Kidderminster ring road. Tommy Shelby et al were on the move, but clearly not heading to Appleby. The road sign announced our arrival. "Herefordshire. You can". Can what? It is a strange ... read more

This is my second winter of non-travel. The New Year came in like a lamb - unseasonably warm (15 degrees in some places) and I was actually in bed but awake at Midnight and watched the fireworks over the Thames on my laptop. Kenji sent a New Year message , and Stevie in Tokyo and Maureen in Worcester. It was good to have some purpose in getting up this morning. I did some yoga, had a shower and waited for Carrie to come by and pick me up to go to a vintage car rally at Much Marcle. Carrie's vitality and interest in doing things and going to new places was one of the things that kept me going through last year, with long discussions and stories of our past lives and walks along the canal ... read more

Where in the world is Gabby the motorhome? Parked up on a tiny strip of parking alongside the park in Ross on Wye. It is just wide enough to get her in with her tyres an inch or so into the road. We should be OK . It is quiet . It is Saturday morning and Ross on Wye is as quiet as a churchyard . Across the road is a park and in it are a handful of walkers and rows upon rows of kayaks. Chained up. We cannot stop here the night . It is just not suitable for our girl Gabby . There are no other car parks so this is a quick walk through to see what Ross has to offer. We woke early . Our body clocks seem intent on waking ... read more

Gabby and Sion are on the road again and it is a good feeling. It's about time too. Time has been flashing past us and we are been too preoccupied with our house sale. We needed a well deserved break and this would give us a good chance to test things out in Gabby and carry out a shake down trip. We loaded Gabby up with clothes, food , essentials and non essentials. We forgot coffee - need to add that urgently to a list of things to buy. The weather wasn't kind to us . A touch of snow which turned the tarmac white. A scrap off of the ice from the windscreen . Then there is the wind and the rain. Every day heavy rain and wind that raced through the trees like an ... read more

We really enjoyed just driving the back road of Herefordshire. We could see bright yellow fields in the distance, I assumed mustard. Curiosity finally got to us, so we asked. It is Rapeseed (mustard or cabbage family) is grown for the production of animal feeds, edible vegetable oils, and biodiesel. Stopped to walk Hay-on-Wye which has become world famous for its secondhand and antiquarian bookshops. Hay Castle has been turned into cafe/shop. Strolled around St. Mary the Virgin Church. The trail access to the cliff top at Symonds Yat Rock provides picturesque views of the Wye River and a good vantage point for its Iron age inhabitants, who built a fort here 2,500 years ago. It also provides viewing for a birds of prey exhibit. Got to YHA late in the day and pretty sketchy drive ... read more

Having fallen in love with pictures of stunning countryside, we decided to spend our week’s holiday in Hereford between 10th and 16th May 2014. As we would go to the Cotswolds or Cornwall, we took the train from London Paddington. The Paddington –Hereford line ran past beautiful countryside and honey-coloured villages via Oxford, Moreton-in-Marsh, Evarsham, and Worcester. Mark had booked the B/B hotel and printed out the map. Our hotel is at the edge of Widemarsh Street; it was very convenient to access to the city centre and bus/train station. Widemarsh Street led us to the High Town, the city centre. We strolled through High Street and Broad Street, and reached the Tourist Information Centre near the Cathedral. Mark picked up the information leaflets and bought maps. There were a wide range of local products, accessories, ... read more
