Lynne and I depart Cardiff, Wales on Friday, 27 June 2008. Our next stop is Leominster (pronounced Lemsta) , Herefordshire, England. We had pre-booked 3 nights in the hostel there. We purchased our tickets and boarded the train. The train heads towards Manchester in the Midlands. There are two coaches (cars) on this train and they fill up rapidly. We are forced to put our backpacks in the back of the coach and take our seats near the front of the coach. We settled in for the two-hour train ride to Leominster. We enjoy the views of the English countryside as the train heads north. We stop in small towns along the way. Although we had pre-purchased a two-month Eurial pass for train travel in Europe, rail companies in the UK do not honor this pass. ... read more

England Baby!!! Day 2: So, after a lot of trouble, I am here in Lugwardine, Hereford in the U.K. Luckily, it only took getting stuck in Chicago for the night and losing all my luggage in the process but, at least I learned something very valuable out of all this... ALWAYS take a day or two change of clothes with you, in a carry on, when flying internationally. Definitely would have come in handy... To start off the day I went out around some of the towns and country side and got to take in some of this great scenery. We drove around Hereford a little bit and then split off toward Ledbury, up into the Malverns, through Wyche and the historic pass cut out by the Romans, and then circled all the way back down ... read more

Hi Folks The rain promised for later today has just arrived … good timing as I have had a day ‘on site’ airing my duvet and two sleeping bags, generally airing the tent and washing all my clothes. Needless to say this all takes a little longer than it would in a ‘normal’ residence. Perhaps not quite such a relaxing day as planned following a long cycle ride yesterday along the Wye Valley to the west of Hereford. A few days ago I had a lovely walk - only about seven miles - along the Marcle Ridge a few miles to the south of the campsite. Those of you used to proper hills would not recognise this as a true ridge but we shall let that pass - suffice to say that unlike Striding Edge and ... read more

Hi Folks ! Following two or three days of inactivity through a rather dull period of weather I have been active once more as the sun has been shinning for the past week or so. Thought you might like to see my home from home …. Two tents …. one very small in which I keep my ‘stuff’ - cookers (I have three), gas bottles, loo, generator, dirty clothes ….. To erect this tent you simply open the bag, take the tent out and throw it in the air - it lands fully erect. All you then have to do is peg the sides and guy lines - easy. However I would not want to sleep in it as it does not seem to be weather proof. I think this is what young people call a ... read more

4 June 2008 Hi Folks ! Combined cycle and walking day. Blue skies ! Away from camp site by 7am (gates are locked until that time - just in case any of you feel that I am slacking by setting off at such a late hour !!!!). With the bike in the back of the car I made off for an area a few miles from the camp and generally to the south of Hereford. I parked as intended in a rough parking area near a footpath and set off to walk to the confluence of the Lugg and Frome and then the Lugg and Wye. I will not bore you with the detail … well since you insist …. perhaps not although anyone who studied geography to an advanced level will know that these rivers ... read more

01 June 2008 (must be my birthday !!) Hi Folks ! The bright weather of yesterday has been replaced by the grey gloom that has dominated much of this trip. Aim of today is to sweep through the rest of southern Herefordshire and arrive at the CACC Hereford site by mid-afternoon. Note that the site is not actually in H but some seven miles to the east near the village of Tarrington. First visit was to Abbey Dore which is a curious feature ….. Many of the parishes in this area have absurdly large churches for the size of the community but Abbey Dore is by far the largest in this category. Founded as a Cistercian Abbey in the twelfth century the exterior certainly has a monastic feel although there is a confusion of architectural styles. ... read more

31 May 2008 Hi Folks This was a quite delightful day - possibly the best so far. Having finally escaped the clutches of Gloucestershire I quickly immersed myself in the delights of Herefordshire - a county I have not previously visited. For those of you who are not clear on where this is … it is between the English Midlands and the Welsh county of Powys and so geographically is transitional between the Midland plain and the Cambrian Mountains. If I had any doubts that this was border country then they quickly disappeared on arrival in Hay-on-Wye the night before. Now I thought that Hay was in England but the street signs are in both languages - which of course makes for even larger signs cluttering up the place and spoiling the view. Do we really ... read more
