Hi everyone We are now in Wellington Heath, Herefordshire with our dear friends Helen and Gavin. You know how it's very British to talk about the weather well I must tell you what's going on. It’s incredibly sunny and warm. Yes, I did say we are in England!! Yesterday it was 26 degrees....imagine that! It was warmer than Brisbane which was 22 degrees. The consequence of this is that there are a lot of very pale people (myself excepted) getting a few rays. Much to Peter's chagrin, I raided a few of the Ledbury op shops to buy some semi-summerish clothes. Peter restrained himself from saying you don't need those and how will we fit them into the suitcase. I think he's finally given up! This morning we did our pilgrimage to the butchers shop in ... read more

Short Night The clocks went forward tonight so not too much sleep. Not sure if either of the pillows he had bought yesterday was quite right. It's a bit like Goldilocks. The memory foam was a little small (but it would save space), the other one was too big (though it would probably compress with age). We are having a pillow review when we get home! We walked up the old railway line into the centre of Ledbury for a guided walk with the retiring chairman of the Civic Society. Found out a lot I didn't know but it was so COLD. As soon as he finished we rushed back to the Plume of Feathers for Sunday Lunch, only to find a couple of us who were half way through theirs as they had not completed ... read more

Not the Walk We opted out of the walk as we had done part of it last month and wanted to chill a bit. We had a slow start chatting to some of the other non-walkers, then set off to the centre of Ledbury with a few things to buy and remembered what an interesting place Ledbury is, some shops had closed since we were last there and the cafe in the cook shop/deli had closed. Coffee and cakes in the Internet Cafe that has a poet/story/song session once a month that we have never been to, but I thought was off the other way! Fairly successful with our shopping and walked back to the Rugby Club, the people on the walk had arrived back in Ledbury not too late for lunch. Unfortuneatly our Van was ... read more

List making I attempted to form a list for our first trip and that was pretty comprehensive. I deliberately missed out some things I should have taken. Water management is a question and which camping club is the best to join. Embarrassment Arrived at Ledbury Rugby Club and parked up in neat lines on car park. Some had taken to the grass, but they were staying longer and looked a bit too close to the action. The large puddle under our van was put down to overfilling the cold water tank........ I had done this at home on a slope so seemed a reasonable explanation. Over 25 Murvies due for the weekend, our first chance to compare and contrast. Warm welcome from all and invited Simon (Garf) and Jess (the other local owners who we knew ... read more

26th-30th Oct Bilbao old town was interesting and 'tapas crawling' was great, especially when we inadvertently found ourselves in the seedier end of town- felt quite out of place without a piercing or a tattoo and briefly toyed with the idea of getting one! But the highlight of Bilbao was the brilliant Gugenheim museum. I've used the term 'awe inspiring' alot on this journey and this was another time when the term applied. Our regret was that the others had already left and couldn't share it too. The architecture was amazing, from the organic lines of its titanium outer shell to the central atrium, where the only straight line is the floor and a vast curved glass elevator sweeps up to the galleries and walkways. The best exhibit for me was a whole roomful of Richard ... read more

Went to Weston to see a Loveday relation. Went to local church fair and met the "Vicar of Dibley". John purchased cart horse brasses - significant to family history - from a trash and treasure stall at the fair. Travelled to Chignal Smealy - more family history - 9th great grandfather - Hugh Loveday. Travelled to Little Waltham - 8th great grandfather - Edward Loveday. Travelled to Springfield - 6th Great grandfather - Barrington Loveday. Went to Chelmsford to see the Loveday jewellery shop - the prosperous side of the family.... read more

Well only just over a week to go now. Continuing to make lists and buy stuff that seems really useful but will probably never be used. Have even told the kids where to find the wills.....just in case! It's raining at the moment and the realisation that it is not going to be all sunshine and laughter like 'Summer Holiday' is beginning to dawn. I had an image of the amazing hippy adventure we never had in 1968, but I guess that at sixty, it's more likely to be a cup of tea from a thermos and a wander round another ancient ruin- see, you don't have to be young to be naive! Thermos....must add that to the list. ... read more

Well, a month from now we'll have begun our adventure. We have made lists, spreadsheets and even a risk assessment so nothing can possibly go wrong. Elaine and Alan have already started and are currently languishing in Greece, we'll meet them in Sussex soon for their son John's wedding before going off. The plan is to cross at Calais and pootle down France where we'll stay at Carcassonne for a week, then we hope to make Barcelona for the 'Festa de la Merce' at the end of September. After that it's a very leisurely meander round Spain and Portugal and return home sometime at the end of October. The only major risk on this trip is , as our friend Andy charmingly puts it, they'll be all 'Sally'd out' after a week or two. I can ... read more

Thursday 15.4.2010 day 183 Volcanoed in the UK Today there was a Volcano in Iceland and due to the ash in the air drifting across the UK and Scandinavian all air space in the UK was closed so no aeroplanes could take off or land after midday today till at least tomorrow. We do not know when they will be able to fly again and it will take a long time to shift the back log of passengers. We are hoping it will not affect our flights in 4 days time. There are 1300 flight out of Heathrow a day so that is s lot of flights to catch up and that if saying they can fly tomorrow. Instead of going out today we keep an eye on the news, worked on our computers and I ... read more
