Excursion to Leominster Mark suggested we should go to Leominster on Wednesday, 14 May. We took the bus from the country bus station behind Chinese restaurant. There were quite a few passengers on the bus. Leominster is the second biggest town in Herefordshire (the largest one is Hereford), and it is known for black-white buildings. After we got off the bus, we headed for the Grange Court. The town’s most distinctive building possessed richly carved structure and beautifully lined timber frames in the façade, and the modern heritage centre was adjacent to the historic building. Grange Court was built in 1633 by John Abel, the King’s carpenter and was originally the town hall. We looked round the dining room, galley and nursery and looked at the needlework representing the history of English monarchies and history of ... read more

On15th May, we went to Queenswood Country Park, located between Hereford and Leominster. We bought a map of the Country Park & arboretum in the shop and started exploring. We were both interested in going to the viewpoint, and followed the footpath on the Lime Avenue and Jubilee Walk towards the destination. It was a very clear and sunny morning, and it allowed us to see wonderful panoramic views of the county, from Malvern Hills in the east to the Black Mountains in the west. After taking photos, we went back to the trail, stopped at summer garden, autumn garden, redwood grove, Queen Elizabeth Grove, and Oak Avenue. There were a wide variety of conifers, wildflowers, shrubs and trees growing healthily on the arboretum. We saw carpets of bluebells and buttercups at the foot of trees, ... read more

Last team training day before we head off to Lithuania was a great day, considering the forecast was storms and heavy rain. We got to Leintwardine to stop for a pint and joined the St. George celebrations though unfortunately we couldn't stay to watch George slaying the dragon....great Venison burger! We narrowly avoided starting a stampede of cattle and faced many obstacles (such as 580 metres of climb!) to win the day.... read more

We traveled about 60 miles Saturday to see our dear friend, Jenny Harmes who has moved here from New Zealand. This area is called the Chilterns and it was quite different from the Cotswolds. We were much closer to London and some of the towns were very new and very big. The countryside though was delightful. Rolling hills with each field marked by hedges. The villages charming with their old churches and usually a pub being the center of the village. Jenny took us for a scenic drive at the Ashridge Estate which is now a National Trust reserve of over 5000 acres of woodland, walking paths and cycling paths. We saw one small herd of deer. It was just about the coldest day, so we were happy to look from the car. The view of ... read more

23rd June 4pm Hereford Day 16 Now anyone reading this that has an aptitude for geography will note that Hereford is not in Wales. This is because I have decided to take a few days off from my coastal trek, mainly at the behest of a certain young English lady who decided to take a few days off work and requested the pleasure of my company while doing so. So far be it from me to deny a lady her wishes, and always being willing to see more of the great British countryside, I boarded a train at Milford Haven this morning and made my way back on to English soil. After all, I figured I’ve earned a bit of R&R after the last few days (not that I really have to justify myself to anyone, ... read more

This is a trip we nearly didn't make... I wanted to record it anyway. The plan was to take off from work early Thursday and head down to Froxfield, Friday morning head off to Symonds Yat. Then, on Tuesday, just before dinner, I (Hilary) fell unconscious in the downstairs corridor getting a spectacular black eye in the process. Ashley couldn't rouse me so he called 999. I was in hospital for 72 hours where no good explanation for the black out was found. Out in time to head out to Froxfield a little later than planned. The weather was not good. Intermittent heavy showers meant that when we arrived at The Pelican the bike was no longer shiney. We were tired and wet. We managed to completely mistime things so that we missed visiting Ashley's brother. ... read more

You ever have one of those days when your body feels broken and you wonder why you put yourself through it? I admit it I'm shattered after another hiking weekend of misrepresented hike lengths (tip ... add at least half again to any number told!) and body parts which keep failing to meet my personal expectations! On the plus side I did sleep well and NO BLISTERS which after the last few trips is a miracle!!! The Welsh border lands (the Welsh Marches) and walking along the Offa's Dyke Path is one of the great walks in the United Kingdom (apparently). The Path stretches 177 miles from Chepstow in South Wales all the way up to Prestatyn on Liverpool Bay right up north. This weekend we got to played on two different bits of the Path. ... read more

Hi everyone We've just finished watching the royal wedding and it was a splendid occasion. The weather was fine and sunny at times which made it a much nicer event for the crowds. They were forecasting 600,000 people along the route but I'd be surprised if there weren't more than that. The pomp and pageantry was quite majestic and the bride's dress was stunning (as you all know). It was quite a contrast from Princess Diana's meringue dress. There were a few references to Princess Diana by the BBC correspondents but they didn't harp on about it. Helen, bless her bought some bunting that we put up as part of the celebration...you'll be able to see that in the photos. We also had union jack serviettes and paper plates. So it was a very British event! ... read more
