4 June 2008 Hi Folks ! Combined cycle and walking day. Blue skies ! Away from camp site by 7am (gates are locked until that time - just in case any of you feel that I am slacking by setting off at such a late hour !!!!). With the bike in the back of the car I made off for an area a few miles from the camp and generally to the south of Hereford. I parked as intended in a rough parking area near a footpath and set off to walk to the confluence of the Lugg and Frome and then the Lugg and Wye. I will not bore you with the detail … well since you insist …. perhaps not although anyone who studied geography to an advanced level will know that these rivers ... read more

01 June 2008 (must be my birthday !!) Hi Folks ! The bright weather of yesterday has been replaced by the grey gloom that has dominated much of this trip. Aim of today is to sweep through the rest of southern Herefordshire and arrive at the CACC Hereford site by mid-afternoon. Note that the site is not actually in H but some seven miles to the east near the village of Tarrington. First visit was to Abbey Dore which is a curious feature ….. Many of the parishes in this area have absurdly large churches for the size of the community but Abbey Dore is by far the largest in this category. Founded as a Cistercian Abbey in the twelfth century the exterior certainly has a monastic feel although there is a confusion of architectural styles. ... read more

31 May 2008 Hi Folks This was a quite delightful day - possibly the best so far. Having finally escaped the clutches of Gloucestershire I quickly immersed myself in the delights of Herefordshire - a county I have not previously visited. For those of you who are not clear on where this is … it is between the English Midlands and the Welsh county of Powys and so geographically is transitional between the Midland plain and the Cambrian Mountains. If I had any doubts that this was border country then they quickly disappeared on arrival in Hay-on-Wye the night before. Now I thought that Hay was in England but the street signs are in both languages - which of course makes for even larger signs cluttering up the place and spoiling the view. Do we really ... read more

It's pronounced Lemster, would you believe? Would you also believe that Gareth had to get a new wheel? Only his spoke broke opposite a cycle shop. Finally, the wind eased off, the rain stopped and we crossed the Severn Bridge in Wales, which looked...much the same as England. Except the road signs were supplemented with some unintelligible clusters of letters. We enjoyed a 3 mile downhill on beautiful tarmac, to the impressive Tintern Abbey. Lunch in Monmouth was spent watching highlights of the previous days' cricket. We made it to the Leominster YH with enough time to wake our new, hungover roommate (he lay on the bed for 13 hours, making strange noises), check out a couple of local pubs and their local ales. What should have been a restful night's sleep was spoiled by the ... read more

We were set free for the weekend to do what we wished, and, after initally planning a trip to London, a few of us set off on a road less travelled. We were headed to the famous little town of Hay on Wye, where there are many unique vintage bookstores. After two hours on the train we stopped in Hereford, planning to take up a one hour bus ride in the morning. I absolutely love taking trains. In southern California, I take the train often to Orange County, Santa Barbara, or even Anaheim. However, in an effort to make my travelling case a little lighter, I left my ipod nano and the book I planned to read. Considering that the ipod is only a few ounces, I was moderately teased for my line of reasoning. So, ... read more

Wednesday 2 April 2008 Our meandering took us across the border back into England and to the lovely town of Leominster (thats pronounced Lemster for non-locals). Upon arrival we were greeted by Barbara's delightful aunt Joan and husband Malcolm. It was late afternoon by the time we arrived. We chatted and shared photos for number of hours over some nice tea and delicious home-made easter cake. Then Joan prepared a fantastic dinner of venison stew with prune & orange jelly for dessert. Barbara was sorry to pass on the rhubarb with ginger because Michael said it was superb. We stayed up late looking through more photos and getting to know one another then retired to our upstairs sleeping quarters. Thursday 3 April 2008 In the morning we enjoyed teaching Joan how to see Australia via Google ... read more

In view of Lavinia having just over one week left to recover following her operation, we decided to hot step it to Herefordshire to do a 5 mile stroll, in order to help improve Lavinia's post operative fitness for the Pennine Way at the end of April and breathe in some fresh country air. We have not really ventured into Herefordshire before and so decided to wake up bright and early to check out the county's delights on a family stroll. To our pleasure we discovered that Herefordshire is a wonderful county; with some spectacular countryside, gentle river valleys, views of the beautiful Malvern Hills and the windswept peaks of the Black Mountains in Wales. There are many apple and pear orchards in Herefordshire - which is why the county is famous for its cider! Lav ... read more
