Today was not a very fun day. We loaded up the coach in Stratford and drove to Stow-on-Wold. When we arrived at the hostel, I went inside to check things out. After five minutes, I suddenly realized my writing notebooks were missing—doubly not good since I made them by hand before the trip and they had three weeks’ worth of writing. And my first essay, which is due today, is in there, and there’s no way I’m rewriting it. I knew I had them on the coach, so we called the bus company and asked them to search for them. They called back a few minutes later saying they weren’t there. Well, this was not an ideal state of affairs—losing all of what I had come here to do. John was leading some people out on ... read more

Wednesday 2nd May Today I picked up my replacement bike (the wounds were still fresh), an 07 Specialized Rockhopper from a guy outside Notting Hill tube station. Apart from a snapped brake lever where he'd hit a pole it was like new. Now I just had to buy all the accessories again. At least I had wheels again, walking sucks! Thursday 3rd May Continuing the streak of bad luck, I tubed it to Wimbledon to pick up a TomTom portable GPS unit I'd bought for Em (to stop her getting lost all the time) and it turned out to be faulty. Also snapped my Walkman headphones and my week old shoes were already falling apart. Thinking of Matt Moo puts things into perspective though and I get over it pretty quickly. Day 10: Mon, May 7th After the fantastic breakfast at our great B&B, we jumped in our car to drive the short distance to Stow-on-the-Wold (one of the most popular Cotswold towns). But today was a Bank Holiday, and there was some kind of Equestrian thing going on. So, Stow was sooo crowded! We couldn’t find anyplace to park, and the streets were jammed full of cars and people. So, we just drove back to Broadway. We then walked, out of Broadway, about a mile of “The Cotswold Way.” It did start to sprinkle a little (first day of rain). The scenery was great, all green fields over gently rolling hills with adorable towns scattered around. After walking back into Broadway, we shopped around the local farmers market. I bought some amazing fudge, omg, sooo good! ... read more

The last couple of days in Lukla we spent relaxing, shopping, recovering. Those of you who might be thinking that I did jolly well for the first time on an Asia holiday not to get a tummy upset, knowing my history, alas, I fell at the last fence after a meal at Rum Doodle's. Possibly the worst meal of my life and then spent one of the worst night's of my life trying to work out which end of me took priority in the bathroom. Kathmandu got hotter and hotter, really quite hard to bear after the freshness of the mountains (yes I know I was whinging about the cold earlier but I'm like that) and yesterday we knew it was time to come home. It has been (with apologies to Dickens) 'the best of ... read more

I certainly turned 29 with a bang...thanks to everyone for their well wishes and birthday cards. Here are some pictures from my birthday drinks at the Tabernacle in London. If drinks were not enough, I was lucky enough to take a birthday daytrip down to the stunning Southend on sea, Essex with Lawrence, Mads and Andrew (if you could hear me talking now you would hear the sarcasm in my voice!) ...think Rye foreshore/moe. I have also put some pics of my Easter weekend away down in the beautiful Cotwolds with Lawrence and his parents...it was so amazing, the sun was shining all weekend which is a nice change. Even though we managed quite a relaxing weekend full of good food, wine and banter...we also took a sneaky trip to Bath, had some long walks ... read more

An hour and a half til we leave and I thought I'd better test out my newly purchased 'Shewee'. For the uninitiated this is a gadget that a lady can use that enables her to wee standing up in relative modesty without exposing her bottom, (peachy though it may be), to the world. I tried one of these in the 'Sheepee' tent at Glastonbury, a reasurringly capacious cardboard tray affair and was very impressed. There aren't a lot of trees or foliage on the trek and it can be tricky for girls to find places to go to the loo so I decided to invest in a Shewee. Well I've just tested it out and it's completely useless. I'm not going to go into too much gory detail (more of those to come in the ... read more

Incredibly excited. Unfortunately our team is now 4 instead of 5 as Gavin has had to drop out after all his stomach problems. However we are keeping our 3 Sherpa porters and will name one of them Gav so that we still feel he's there in spirit. It's now me, Simon, Phil and Vicky intrepidly going where loads of people have been before. The spare room is covered in medicines, clothes, kit and all the odds and sods that are vital for a trip like this. Our own weight in Immodium, rehydration salts, Diocalm, athlete's foot cream, corn plasters (where the hell did they come from?!), painkillers, knee supports etc. I cannot wait for life to become so simple, reduced to sleep, eat, walk, eat, walk, eat, sit sleep. For days and days. And to do this in stunningly beautiful scenery. ... read more

Just under 3 weeks to go and it's all starting to become very real. I can't believe the massive adventure I am about to embark on and I feel very excited not unmixed with a certain amount of fear. We have been doing trainng walks on the Cotswold Way, have been to the Brecons and are going to the gym regularly. I am a bit worried about my knees. My left knee is playing up at the moment and I really don't know how it is going to behave. Still, anything could happen, any of us could get food poisoning, twist and ankle, get kicked by a yak so no point worrying. ... read more

So it was time i actually got out of London for the weekend and what better oportunity than to go meet up with someone i met in London who invited me up to show me around a different part of England. So after working at the pub till 3am i managed to catch the 1450 train from Paddington which got me into Evesham at bout 5pm. Starting to get a bit on the darker side but still went for a walk along the river and around a bit of Evesham, but in the dark theres not alot to see really. We got back to the flat and had some dinner and got ready for a night out. Was actually a good night out, i enjoyed myself. The next day we went for a tiki tour to ... read more

I was just reviewing my last entry and I certainly used "the next day" a lot didn't I. The train trip to Darlington was interesting and made in a shorter time than I was told. I got in at 2.20pm. The expected time of arrival was 2.40pm. Pat and Kendra arrived at the station to pick me up and we made the trip back to Hutton-Rudby. That was a nice drive through some typical Yorkshire villages. Over the course of the time I was there I met the whole family and was made to feel very welcome. Ken, Pat's husband, was at home looking after their three year old grandson Loui who is a bundle of energy and loves playing with his grandad. His mum, Clair is a chartered accountant who works for a big industrial ... read more
