Today i woke up way too late but at least I wasnt hung at all!! Woke up around 11 and got in trouble because we were supposed to be out by 1030 and missed breakfast as well! I wasnt too happy cause its not like we were staying for free! Your really not allowed to sleep in which i think is ridiculous...and no breakfast!!! I bought stuff to eat so i wasnt happy...they said that it was the law that ppl had to be out while they were cleaing or something. Oh well i paid for my next night and they were happy again. So we treked off to take the bus to the trail. On the way we grabbed some breaky, turned out to be fish and chips cause it was like 1130 =(. Then ... read more

I got up at normal time today. Only this time i had to worry about packing up all my crap!! I did all my laundry the night before in the sink to dry so i was pretty much ready to go! Packed up all my stuff and Simon had to take me for some more Black pudding at the Shamrock so i would be ready for my journey to the Lake District. I called the hostel at Ambleside and made a reso for the night so i knew i had a place to rest my head. They said it was one of the last spots so I was lucky!!! So off we went for some grease. I only got the med but that was good enough!! ohhhhhh man it was good...i was gonna miss this for ... read more

Sunday. On today's blog I have put a picture of the Cottage but it is a cheat because it was actually taken in 2006! Nothing changes with the old stone buildings... As we have only Fletchers present today, we are taking the required hike up over Wansfell Pike above Ambleside. This is where I and the boys scattered much of the ashes of my Father in 2004. It was probably one of his favourite places, he and I had been going there from time to time since I was a boy. The view from Wansfell is a lovely dual-aspect one, covering Ambleside and the Langdales to the West, and Windermere itself to the East and South. Our walk starts in town down by the garden centre, goes along the slope above the east side of town ... read more

We have left all the jolly Residents behind in the hands of our excellent staff and made the 340 mile journey through some of the UK's finest car parks - notably the traffic jams on the M6 between Birmingham and Manchester, which today took an unreasonable 2 hours. Chris has gone on from his head start in Manchester and phones to say he's in the pub near the house at Rydal (schweinhund!) while we are still south of Man. We arrive at Hallbank Cottage at about 3.30 pm. All is well at this familiar house, but it feels like it has been unoccupied for some weeks and needs serious warming up with the log fire. The heating is playing up (i.e. not working) but this takes another 24 hours to figure out. First duty is to ... read more

Anyone thinking of visiting the Lake District in the UK? If you enjoy the outdoors and good walks then I'd advise to go. On Sunday we walked a classic Lakeland walk known as the Fairfield Horse shoe, we are getting some training in because we go to Borneo in 6 weeks to tackle Mount Kinabalu. This walk starts in Ambleside and finishes in Ryedale, it was really tough and the scenery is as good as any I've seen. The walk itself was about 14 miles and took us about 6 hours I’ve got to re iterate it was quite tough but then again I’m not an experienced walker. The lakes is a stunning place we reached heights of 3000ft which is nothing compared to the great mountains of the world but was still a good walk. ... read more

Hi all, We have been at Ambleside at the northern end of Lake Windermere in the gorgeous Lakes District of England since Friday and we leave tomorrow (Monday) morning. We have had a very relaxing time here - travelling up and down the length of the lake by ferry on a 2 day pass and visited The World of Beatrix Potter at Bowness which is half way down the lake(saw wonderful exhibition of all of her much loved characters - Caitlin's favourites were Jemima Puddleduck, the 2 naughty mice, and Peter Rabbit, of course). Today we caught a bus to the nearby village of Keswick which is the home of Derwent lead and coloured pencils, so we visited the Pencil Museum and learned how to paint with water-colour pencils. We also visited a Motor Museum - ... read more

I didn't know what to expect upon entering the Lake district but I was pleasantly suprised. The rolling hills, the beautiful lakes, and the abundant source of earthy, hiking boot travellers. It was wonderful to spend a few days with Karen from Melbourne and a couple of odd things worth mentioning happened on our hikes. 1. When we were a bit lost we came across a lonesome hiker who we asked, "Did you hike from Grasmere?" (which is the nearest town we were trying to arrive at) He replied, " No, I'm American." We had to laugh later at such an oblivious answer...poor guy. 2. When approaching a goat on our path the creature stopped, looked at us, then lifted up his leg and tried to spray us with his pee....cheeky little thing. 3. Farther along ... read more

Just back from Lake District! A 3D2N trip, tiring but very rewarding! Stayed at this hostel call Ambleside Backpackers, and our room was filled with two other pairs of couples, Lisa and Brad, Jess and Michael, who were totally helpful and fun loving people! Thanks folks for the great time together! The highlight of the trip was when me and shan decided to challenge The Fairfield Horseshoe circuit on the second day. Its a trek thats near the lake district, relatively straightforward (in good weather) and the views were awesome! The tougher part was actually finding the way up, and the coming down was really terrible for my poor knees...I was totally enjoying my trek up, the view from the top, even before getting to the top, was spendid! The trek had a wonderful view of ... read more

Lake District’s a National Park with stunning scenery. I’ve been really lucky so far weather wise. The gorgeous slate houses are unique to the area, especially being surrounded by jagged peaks and mountain lakes. I stayed in Ambleside, an attractive village and one of the five towns in the park. The world of Beatrix Potter is here too! Renee Zellweger was in town filming also. Went to a disco. The night life reminds me of Banff’s bars, i.e. tons of young people. Maybe it’s a National Park thing. Unlike Banff though for a town that's touristy I hardly noticed any. Also at this disco there were security/door men at each door in the place which seemed completely unnecessary. I ended up ditching the fromage for sleep instead. ... read more

Land of Beatrix Potter and home to William Wordsworth is not usually somewhere that would appeal to us as a holiday destination, but England's Lake District is also known for its magnificent scenery and delicious food ... that sounds more like it! We arrived in Windermere at midday on the Saturday of a bank holiday weekend and set about trying to find somewhere to park our tent. A visit to the tourist office revealed that nearly every one of the at least twenty camping grounds in the area was either booked out or did not allow tents (what sort of campground is that?). Our only hope was a massive campground that apparently did not take bookings but 'never ran out of room as they just open up a new paddock when one gets full'. Sounded a ... read more
