Sunday 28th February. Embark Marco Polo We embarked the Marco Polo at around 7 pm and, for the first time, sailed out of Avonmouth docks down the Bristol channel. We couldn't see much as it was dark. We went down to dinner at 8.30 and met our new dining companions who are called Brendan, June, Malcolm and Mia. Brendan and June are ex-teachers (Brendan's subject being Geography!) so this should be an interesting trip. We went to see the "Welcome Aboard" show and were surprised to see that Daniel was still aboard as a PH (Performance Host) and Katie had been promoted to Assistant Cruise Director. Lee, the new Cruise Director, is a young chap from Barrow and there is a new singer called Emma. We followed this up with the "Meet the Singers" show in ... read more

It's been a while since we blogged, but now we have reliable Internet access we're back. We also had some photo issues that mean some of these posts will be out of order. After returning to England from France we stopped off in Bath and Bristol for a few days. We spent a morning looking around the Roman Baths. We have half a million photos of this but will only post a few. In the afternoon we drove to Bristol and visited Simon's cousin Ruth for a while. It was great timing as Darren had just started renovating the living room. We then went on to Auntie Sharon and Uncle Clive's house for a big Bristol family gathering. There are too many of us to fit around the table now, so we spilled out into the ... read more

Przejazd do Bristolu zajął dwie i pół godziny. Długa droga, ale szybko minęła. Autobus zatrzymał się na ulicy Canons Way tuż obok Milenium Square - było to miejsce naszych spotkań. Miałyśmy półtorej godziny czasu wolnego. Poszłyśmy zwiedzić Katedrę Bristolską - katedra wzniesiona została w XII wieku, w miejscu, gdzie według tradycji w 603 roku doszło do spotkania Św. Augustyna z celtyckimi chrześcijanami. W 1539 roku kościół podniesiono do rangi katedry. ... read more

After a first day in London (more on that later if I get around to it) and a visit to a Great Western Railway working steam museum, it was out to the West Country again yesterday, but this time a little further. Jumped on a fast train to Bristol, under two hours from London. We flashed past the very picturesque Roman town of Bath, from where the Wardell family was banned on our last trip after a young female member was heard to say loudly in the Jane Austen Heritage Centre: "Who's Mr Darcy?". Oh, the shame of it. So I pushed on to Bristol Temple Meads, another large station on the GWR, complete on this day with a heritage train, the Torbay Express, standing under a grand arched roof. Was raining when I got there, ... read more

I arrived in Bristol Friday aafternoon. I made my way by bus up to my AirBnb room, and luckily got off at the right bus stop. When I arrived at the house, I rang the bell and no one answered. I rang again and no one answered. I pulled out my phone and called my host -- answering machine. Great. Now what? I decided to hang out on the front wall of the house and hope she'd just been out to grab something as I'd arrived about 20 min. later than expected. Then suddenly the door opened and she was there! Apparently she'd been on the phone out in the garden and didn't hear the doorbell. Phew! I was starting to think I might have to camp out in the front yard... She let me do ... read more

The prospect of packing has been a greatly anticipated one in the run up and preparation for my long awaited trip. Yet here I am, a week away from departure, the need to crack on ever bearing down, and it has turned out to ultimately be a total ball ache. I have spent months writing lists, even lists of future lists to be written. (A habit my family ceaselessly mocks me for.) Lists and post-it notes galore, I am therefore seemingly the expert traveller with my packing organisation and you would think I had this in the bag. (Ha!). Wrong. As I become ever more determined to defy my womanly instincts to pack everything 'just in case', and take as little as humanly possible, I have noticed a pattern. You might think it goes like this: ... read more

A lovely couple of days sailing in the Bristol channel. Waters a bit like chocolate milkshake, but it's still pretty when the suns out. Day 1 - We sailed from Bristol harbour over to Portisead for the night. Sunny, no wind. Lovely cruise down the Avon and under the suspension bridge. Then popped out at Avonmouth. Sails up & engine on as there is a tiny breeze and with the tide and no engine we go backwards. We motor over to Portishead Marina and I get complicated on my driving by the fisherman on the quayside. You can imagine Mike's response. Then it's off to a wedding in the town. We leave Janet & Rod in charge of Disco Volante while we're gone. Day 2 - Have to be up at 8am to catch an early ... read more

Hi everybody, After a bout of the sniffles (remind me to post something about preventing sickness on trips), I have finally the time to write about my recent trip to Bristol. the First bus company is actually a great way to get around between Bath and Bristol. X39 route will take to between the two cities in less than 40 minutes! However, you can take 339 or 338 (all by First ) for a longer but more scenic route, along the rolling country farm hills of England. Because I am a student, I get to go to Bristol for free over the weekend using my First bus pass. I think tickets are less than 10 pounds for return though for a regular trip. Once we got to Bristol, it was pouring rain, but no harm, there ... read more
