Boot was indrukwekkend, overtocht ging heel soepel. Laatste stuk rijden naar Malmo, waar we om 17.30 aankwamen....Mooi hotel, midden in het centrum, historisch oud gebouw, heerlijke kamer, super ontbijt in mooie ontbijtruimte (waar we nu al 1,5 uur zitten :-)). Vandaag?. Malmo bekijken.... Laterrr! Chiel, Eveline, Tom P.s. - beetje late update maar we hebben even gevochten met de computer en hoe deze op netwerken ... read more

And The Rain Finally Ceases Despite getting tired of the constant rain here in Scandinavia, Kel and I have been really good about getting off our rear ends and going out. On the morning of the 9th we poked around a bit too much before leaving the room in the morning so we sadly found ourselves hungry and with no chance at breakfast. The hotel breakfast ends at 10am and we were ready to leave our room at about 10:15. Instead of rushing out into the rain, we spent the next hour or so in the room while Kel did internet research on Iceland (where we’ll be in about a week and a half). By 11:30 we were both famished and thus had to get out and about to get some food. On our way ... read more

Saturday night Suzanne and I managed to snag Laura and go out for a girls night. First we went for Thai food at this amazing restaurant (worth the wait) that was decorated all tropical with palm trees and tikki posts. Our goal of the evening was to make it to the Ice Bar. The Ice Bar is just as the name says. A bar made of ice! It is located in the lobby of a hotel, and is fairly small (I can't imagine paying to keep a larger place cool!). It is kept at -5 degrees Celcius and the bar is made of ice, the tables, the walls, the benches, and even the glasses in which the serve the drinks. All of the drinks are made with Absolut Vodka - being that it is one type ... read more

We put Norwegian wood on our Norwegian fire in Geilo. A cool little ski resort half way across Norway where the local walking trails include ford crossings! It has been a while since my last update as we have been out in the sticks for the last few weeks travelling through fjords, mountains, forests etc and staying in Hytters which are these cool little cabins with grass on the roof. Sven, Anna, Trent and Monique have now gone back to Australia after Cameron and Malin's wedding in Sundsvall, so my liver can finally have a rest and my wounds have time to heel. I think most of us were only carrying minor injuries after three long weeks, with the exception of Anna's broken foot which we are calling an accident. From Geilo we headed across ... read more

It Seems Rain Is On The Horizon Saturday was yet another travel day, this time from Copenhagen to Stockholm, Sweden. It’s always nice to travel short distances because that makes a travel day much shorter and much less tiring. While we’ve been in Europe before, we haven’t flown in Europe as much as we have been recently so we’ve been a bit surprised at how easy it is to travel in this region. Thanks to EU regulations there is no immigration between most European countries. This means that since we left Germany, one of the few countries that’s still hypersensitive about passport control, that we haven’t had anyone even ask to see our passports. With only an hour in the air between Copenhagen and Stockholm, we really had a pretty short travel day which consisted ... read more

Yesterday we went out to climb the city hall tower, which provided a great 360 degree view of the city. Afterwards we went with Laura and the kids to Zum Franzikaner - the oldest restaurant in Stockholm (opened in 1416!). It was right on the water, so it used to be a drinking and eating hall for all of the sailors back in the day. Here they serve authentic traditional Swedish food. Going out on a limb we all tried something new. Laura and Suzanne both had the deer - which means reindeer. It was served with boiled potatoes and lingon berries. Their deer was nearly raw, because as it turns out if you cook reindeer thoroughly it is so hard you can't chew it. I decided to try a sampler of herring, prepared three different ... read more

I was tempted to title this post “Sjælland (Zealand) and Sweden”, but I promised to avoid such. This is a two part entry, covering a couple of day trips I made from Copenhagen (yes, I was able to tear myself away). July 6, 2007 Waking to another gloomy, grey day, I felt inspired to undertake a Shakespearean pilgrimage to Hamlet’s Elsinore (now called Helsingør) and its castle, Kronborg. Only an hour north of Copenhagen by train, Helsingør felt a suitable location to situate the mad prince - set on the narrow passage of Øresund, the strait that separates Sweden and Denmark; dark choppy seas crash around the castle. But, as my earlier research revealed, the story of Hamlet, while set in Denmark, did not actually unfold in and around Kronborg, but in the region of ... read more

Europe » Sweden » Gotland County » Visby July 5th 2007

Hey all! I just wanted to update quickly to let everyone know that I am in Visby on the island of Gotland. We don't have internet access here except for in internet cafes. The city and the island are breathakingly beautiful and I've been taking pictures like a mad woman. I had no idea that there were actually places that look like this ... it is so vibrant and looks like something out of a story book. I promise to post more once I have regular internet access again. Cheers!... read more
