4/07-5/07 After our move to Boston, our first (and only up to this point) trip was to Scandinavia. Besides a brief few days in Helsinki back in 2003, I hadn't been to the birthplace of my passion for travel in seven long years. What I found there was quite shocking. Prices were high back in my heyday, but now they had gotten even higher. A hot dog in Norway costed $5. Two metro tickets to go three stops in Stockholm was $10. Using the bathroom costed $2. We spent double on this trip then we expected too, but we were just fortunate we had the resources! We started our trip by flying to Oslo and taking the train north to Bodo. We stopped over for a couple hours in Lillehammer and Trondheim. Both were nice ... read more

... read more

Traveling with the Hatt´s Europe » Sweden » Stockholm By ChipwoodJune 14th 2007Untitled Started traveling with Tanna and Marylee in Stockholm and we toured the city for a couple of days and took the ferry tour of the city. Then we decided to head to Norway for a couple of days before we went to Leksand for Mid-summer festival. We took the train to Oslo and arrived in time to catch the last train to Myrdal on our way to the fjords. From Myrdal we road the local tourist train down a steep canyon to Flan at the waters edge, stayed the night and toured the fjords the next day. In the afternoon we took the ferry on a five hour ride ou... read more

Vasa Museum Europe » Sweden » Stockholm » Stockholm By Whittall and WestJune 14th 2007Sal Whittall In his infinite wisdom, the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus commisioned a warship with many cannons. So many cannons, their combined weight sank the boat while leaving the harbour in 1628. 300 years later, the Swedes decided to dredge it up from the seabed and restoring it. Nothing if not determined. It really was interesting- the ship was beautiful, and it had the 15 skeletons found on board with some studies about their physiology, genetics and possessions which was surprisingly re... read more

Botanical Garden (RAIN) Mom and Cathy left today at 7 AM! Michelle and I didn’t get out of bed until almost noon. We took the train to the University and then walked to the Botanical Garden. It was HUGE! We saw so many beautiful flowers and lakes. We also saw the world’s largest lilypad. They have a lilypad that only blooms one night a year, so these plant enthusiasts (nerds) come to the garden every night for a few nights in the summer to wait for it to bloom. We walked around the old town for a while to find a present for Ingela and her family for letting us stay in their house. We decided to get her a hydrangea plant and some dessert pastries. We ran home for dinner, but when we got ... read more

How about a last-minute Elton John concert? Usually going to a concert requires some planning, not the least in the aspect of acquiring tickets. A bit surprisingly though, the concert is not sold out, so we get tickets only a couple of hours before the concert. An artist in this league, the highest of them all, should guarantee a great show, but due to the short notice I haven’t had the time to build up any expectations. Turns out that was for the best. Elton starts the concert with a number of to me unknown songs. If I was in charge of the playlist, I would have chosen a well-known and popular song as a starter, to get the crowd going. But Elton can afford to go his own way. On very few occasions he leaves ... read more

There's not a whole lot to say really. I had packed everything up last night, my bags now filled to the brim with cds and dangerously close to disintegrate upon rough handling. After an uneasy sleep nothing remained than to checkout in the early hours and make my way among the sleepy morning commuters. As another working week begun, my stay was abruptly cut short again. Over at Chek Lap Kok airport I boarded the Finnair MD-11 in short order and noticed that the cabin was only about half-full. No wonder that they had been running their campaign. It looked as if I was going to get three seats all to myself when the last two, and I mean very last two passengers boarded, they were both supersize and had their eyes on my seat row. ... read more
