I got on the bus at the Airport to get into Stockholm and was truely amazed by the lack of people. There was me and this one guy from Australia on there. We both questioned where is everybody? From my own stay here, I think I know why...its not because its not a fantastic place to visit, its just expensive although cheaper than Norway apparently! From the moment I stepped off the bus at Central Station Stockholm, I was in awe because at every angle there was something that deserved to be photographed. My accommodation has been pretty special staying just moments away from the very impressive City Hall (building with 3 crowns on top, see pics). It has been an amazing place to visit and I would love to return, but only after winning the ... read more

My first day in Stockholm - Venice of the North - was also my first day in Scandinavia and the furthest north I'd ever traveled. I'd been so excited about my first visit to this city, where I have distant and unknown relations, a place I've wanted to visit for years. Once I finally arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the familiarity of the foreign, as well as the greenness and vibrancy of the flat landscape. Everywhere I looked was brilliant green, or watery blue, or grey clouds or stone. Not unexpected was the orderliness and efficiency of the city and the kindness of its people, the beauty of old city, and the embrace of the natural and the well-designed. After dropping our luggage at the Old Town Lodge, where we were offered an early breakfast, ... read more

Hi Everyone! This past weekend was Stockholm, Sweden. It's a great city - very clean with lots of things to do. It felt like we didn't even get half of what's available in city, so I wouldn't mind visiting there again. The highlight of the trip was the Vasa Museum, where they raised up a sunken medieval ship and stuck it in a museum. Many pictures as always. Cheers, Joel... read more

Apparently Shawn leaving was reason for a gourmet, Stock-holmcooked (see what I did there ?) breakfast at the hostel. We pooled together our eggs and bacon with a side of toast and a banana, also alongside some orange juice and awful instant coffee ! That basically fillede up for the day, and on day 3 in Stockholm, I've still only bought $15 worth of groceries once... Go Nic ! We also said goodbye to a couple of British guys that we met (who had actually been to Peterborough, England... I asked if they knew where it was and they said it had a very nice church, and left it at that, aha). They were headed waaaay up north in Swedene to get the full snowy, Nordic experience. They told us about this department store on the ... read more

Our first official day in Stockholm was a beauty... This is like the second last blog I can say the words 'our' and 'we' as Shawn left this morning to go onto Lund. Anyways, it was an eventful first day in this large and crowded, but beautiful city. We ventured out of the hostel towards Gamla Stan (Old Town) where my friend and ex-kegger had suggested we go the day before. Wandering through the enchanted, cobblestone streets, we crossed many souvenir shops, each boasting there trinkets, and many cafés and restaurants boasting their menus. It was really really pretty and you get a very secluded feeling; hard to believe as the hustle and bustle of the city centre is just meters away. We wander over a bridge to another island and Shawn stops to get his ... read more

Stirred awake at 5:15 by our quiet friend who is apparently an early riser, I quickly fell back asleep to catch the last few minutes of sleep I could. However in a couple of hours, I find out that we couldn't slept in a whoooole bunch more. We get to the train station at 7, half an hour before the train is set to leave for Stockholm, and find the track proudly by ourselves by following the jumbotron. About 10 minutes before we're supposed to leave, an announcement comes on over the PA, and all I understand is the word Stockholm; then we look at the screen and there's an exclamation mark with 10:00 written next to it. Quickly confirmed by the NSB officials, our train has been delayed 2.5 hours, wooooo!! Having not yet checked ... read more

Geo: 59.3038, 18.1085Today was an easier day. We took the bus to Sodermalm which is the adjacent island and visited the Stockholm City Museum. There were several very good displays about life in Stockholm over the years . It also pointed out that it is a city with many charms but has also wrestled with many of the problems which large cities have dealt with over the years. There was also an excellent display of how the architecture has changed over the years. The emigration exhibit focused primarily on Swedes who went to the US although many went to the Canadian Prairies as well. There are several towns in the US called Stockholm. One display was The Millenium - a behind the scenes look at the actors in the film. Stieg Larsson is the author of ... read more

Geo: 59.3037, 18.1084Last night there was heavy rain and thunder but by the time we set out the rain had stopped and it turned out to be a pleasant day. Back on transit this morning. The system works very well but is definitely busy. One thing we noticed when walking is that stair areas also have twin divided ramps which can be used for bikes and carriages. One observation is that a large number of young women here are either pushing carriages, pregnant or both. You also see men pushing strollers mid-day as well. The fellow who rented us the apartment said that Stockholm is a city of children. It certainly seems to be the case. They have a social system which provides for that. The Nordiska museum is very extensive. To do it thoroughly would take ... read more

Geo: 59.3037, 18.1084The Stockholm Card provides free transit on the city system so we used the buses, subways and trams to get to our destination. All in all it worked quite smoothly. Our first stop was Skansen where 5 centuries of Swedish history can be viewed. There are over 150 buildings on 75 acres and represents all cultures from the north to the south. Thankfully the weather has cooperated today although it is still quite warm. It seems a bit cooler this evening.Upon leaving the Skansen museum we walked past the ABBA Museum. This was not included in our Stockholm Pass so we declined entering. Interestingly, according to what we have heard, the ABBA group is the third largest grossing artistic talent following the Beatles and Elvis. As we walked along the waterfront we passed by a boat ... read more
