The train from Oslo to Stockholm takes about 6 hours plus. Lucky I bought some delicious bollens from Narvesen minimart with my leftover NOK coins so I’m well fed for the journey. I let M sit by the window again because I know he likes to see the view up close. Initially I thought that Norway and Sweden would look exactly the same, that I would not be able to tell the difference (especially because – they used to be one big country before splitting). But apparently – you CAN tell the difference. Sweden country side is somehow looks “scruffier” vs Norway. The houses color had more yellow to it, perhaps because of their flag color. And the most obvious indicator is the road signs. If in Norway the road signs are dominated with blue/white color, ... read more

We got the 8.30 train from Copenhagen to Stockholm – it was a Swedish SJ train and was like the ICE train from Brussels to Cologne a few days ago. The SJ train had even more room but not as futuristic – bit like BMW compared to SAAB. We arrived on time to Stockholm Central, which was similar size to Cologne and Copenhagen station but nowhere near as big and scary as Brussels and St Pancras. We are staying at City Backpackers Hostel and it was about a ten minute walk from the train station. The hostel is absolutely amazing – so lovely and clean and feels more like a hotel then a hostel. And you get as much pasta as you can eat for free (free food – my favourite thing!!). Would highly recommend this ... read more

September 2, 2011 We arrived in Stockholm, Sweden via the Princess Cruise Ship Emerald. While Stockholm is often called the "Venice of the North", it is nothing like Venice. However, most of the downtown is along waterways. That is because Stockholm consists of 14 islands in Lake Malaren, and borders the Baltic Sea. Rather than do a walking tour of the city, we opted instead to see the city by boat. From our sightseeing boat we saw the Royal Palace built in the 18th century, which today houses a number of musuems, the National Theater, Old Town (the original Stockholm), and numerous other musuems buildings, shops, apartments, as well as, the Grona Lund Amusement Park, established in 1883, a very small park when compared to the size of amusement parks we are used to in the ... read more

Remember those police shows on TV where 2 officers would interrogate a crime suspect under the glare of a bright light in a small room trying to bleed a confession? One cop would be the good looking guy with the soft features and in an equally soft voice would offer all manner of possible compromises and positive ramifications if the bad guy was prepared to cooperate with the authorities. Meet Officer Stockholm. The other cop was the crusty, no frills tough guy threatening the suspect with a right royal thrashing via a phone book and making things tough on his family if he didn't fess up. That's Officer Gothenburg. Sweden's big 2 cities have plenty to offer visitors but with completely different approaches. Stockholm has all the silicon, Gothenburg all the "what you see is what ... read more

Bland andra Cape Rengia, Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Taupo, Wellington, Napier, Franz Joseph, Golden Bay, Marlborough Sounds, Christchurch, ... read more

Drumroll, please…This, ladies and gentlemen, is my 200thTravel Blog. I last wrote from Denmark on the eve of our trip to Sweden. I am going to devote the 200th blog to the wedding of our friends Lisa and Rikard. I realized I would reach my 200th blog on this trip and decided immediately to do a special report on the two day wedding extravaganza before finishing the stories from our 7 days in Sweden. The 2 day wedding was held at Rockelstad Castle a bit over an hour from Stockholm. The wedding invitations made it very clear that this was an adults only event, but Lisa had assured me she would help me find someone to watch the kids. Lisa found us a wonderful young man named Patrik who is the son of one of Lisa's ... read more

We have had 2 wonderful days with sunny blue skies, also lovely and warm. So driving about 20 minutes from our house is Tyresta National Park and with the help of Sally Satnav we took a country road out to the coastline. Boots on we set off for a pretty good hike through meadows, forest trails and eventually to a small still lake...then back again to have a sumptuous picnic sitting on rocks overlooking the sea...and some boats in a marina. Then yesterday we were up early and taking the metro into the city to get down to the Quay and take a boat trip out into the archilpelago. Stockholm has 30,000 ( I think I read that somewhere) small islands in the archilpelago. WE picked this particular cruise the Stromma Kanal cruise as it cuts ... read more

Hej folks ( that's me speaking swedish) Here I am with the lovely Lesey in a typical red wooden swedish house ( another house-swap) - perched up on a rocky hill surrounded by great tall trees and 10 mins walk to the nearest bit of lake. And to top it all when the swedish family arrived at my house the dismal english ( and swedish) weather changed and we have had sunny and hot days- with only a few rainstorms a couple of nights. The house is on the southern side of Stockholm and we can be on the metro and into the city in about 20 mins. Each time I come to Stockholm I love it - it is such a beautiful city on many islands , lovely architecture with so much greenery in parks ... read more

A colleague dropped into the conversation that he had an apartment in Sweden which was being sold a the end of the month and why don't I head over and use it for the weekend. Lets just say that it took me about a nano-second to go OK, how many does it sleep, slightly longer to sort out logistics, but a couple of weeks later I was on a plane flying in over the many waterways that makes up the Stockholm Archipeligo to Skavtska Airport and then into the city to wait for my 3 amigas for the weekend - Asha, Ewa and Dan. It was nice to stay in a fancy flat rather than squeezing into a hotel room or the usual hostel. Being able to get up in the morning and relax over a ... read more
