Stirred awake at 5:15 by our quiet friend who is apparently an early riser, I quickly fell back asleep to catch the last few minutes of sleep I could. However in a couple of hours, I find out that we couldn't slept in a whoooole bunch more.
We get to the train station at 7, half an hour before the train is set to leave for Stockholm, and find the track proudly by ourselves by following the jumbotron. About 10 minutes before we're supposed to leave, an announcement comes on over the PA, and all I understand is the word Stockholm; then we look at the screen and there's an exclamation mark with 10:00 written next to it. Quickly confirmed by the NSB officials, our train has been delayed 2.5 hours, wooooo!!
Having not yet checked out this coffee shop that is scattered throughout the city, we grab a cappuccino and mooch the wifi off a nearby Burger King to check emails and surf social media while we wait. It's fun to people watch as everyone is headed by on their way to work.
Our time is up and we head back to the train station and back
to track 18 where Stockholm is displayed.
Another announcement with Stockholm in it, and something about the number 15 (remember we're on 24 hour clock here) so I'm freakin out that we're gonna have to wait another 5 hours for the train. Luckily, it's just a change in platform to track 15 and we board and are good as gold.
On the train, we are offered free coffee and cinnamon rolls because the train was delayed, and Shawn even got a hot dog and coke for free, but I didn't want to take advantage of the situation that much.
We cross the border to Sweden at a trailer park on the right hand side with a monument separating the Norwegian flag and the Swedish flag. Soon afterwards, a girl gets on the train and sits close to us. I'm looking at her and i swear I've seen her before. After catching glimpses of her throughout the ride, I conclude that she is just a rare combination of Avicii and my colleague from The Keg, Danielle Gordon... I'll attach some pictures so you can make the connection too. As you can tell I was really bored on the
6 hour train ride, so bored that I thought long and hard about that, aha.
We finally arrived and walked in what we thought was the right direction to our hostel in a little bit of a rush to try and get there before 6 when the reception closes. A little lost we luckily stumbles upon the Tourist Information centre and looked at a map on one of their iPads and found where we were going.
Stockholm is already quite a busy busy, city. It was packed with people and you get a New York, Toronto type vibe around rush our. Not really my style but there are tons of surrounding islands and the old town is supposed to be incredible.... We'll check it out tomorrow!
Literally less than a 10 minute walk away from the train station and 1 minute from a grocery store, we checked in to the City Hostel and then grabbed some groceries to make dinner. Shawn being Shawn chats up everyone in the hostel even if they're just passing by, but it was me who started the conversation with these three american girls going to university in Spain (definitely seems like a
Touristy
Shawn snapped this of me trying to find a coffee shop. popular thing to do and then come to Scandinavia for spring break!). Shawn made friends with François from Toulouse in France and we all hangout in the kitchen with two other French guys and chatted into the evening.
Oh and I booked my flight to Helsinki for Monday! I'm going to Finland!!
