The bus trip to Valencia in a very comfortable bus took us along the narrow coastal corridor from Barcelona to Valencia. We were able to view the varied land use of extensive, well ordered vineyards, orchards of citrus fruits, particularly oranges, numerous and also extensive and neat olive groves, vegetable crops, quarries, when we passed over the occasional small mountain ranges, however, not an animal in sight. The sea was a rich blue when we were actually close enough to see it as we were not travelling right beside it. Small to large towns hugged the sea coast. The highway was immaculate. Smooth, well-marked and not too busy at all. We arrived in Valencia at 11.30am and stepped into our accommodation a few minutes after 12. Three-quarters of an hour later our feet hit the path ... read more

For experienced cruisers, the best part is visiting ports along the route (besides the naps). Our first port of call was Valencia on Spain's SE coast, in the Baleriac Sea. It is one of Spain's biggest towns but we are only there for the day so we confine ourselves to the old town and take the cruise shuttle into the center of the city. We all troop in together (2 huge tour buses), cameras clicking away, making typical tourist sounds of aahs and wows. The center of their ancient city kept flooding so they diverted the Turia River and transformed the river bed into a long, central park and filled it with playgrounds, gathering spaces, beautiful gardens and paths. It definitely puts Portland’s Forest Park to shame. We cross a bridge to enter through one of ... read more

We were up early on Tuesday to walk to the bus stop. Our train left the station at 8:30 and it was a 30 minute bus to the station. We have the bus and train transportation down and we both are relaxed now. It's time for some stress to keep us on our toes. Maybe a bus strike would do the trick. The train from Seville to Valencia is about 8 and a half hours so there is plenty of time to read, and nap. We had lunch in the club car which consisted of a boxed sandwich, chips and a beer. The scenery along the way is unremarkable. At the station, we were picked by our host, Carlos. This is the first time that we have been picked up by our host. Carlos is a ... read more

I know now that me catching a bus/train/plane to a new destination is a crap shoot. I really don't enjoy getting minutes there before it leaves so I thought this time would be different. I left at 7:40 am and was going to find some breakfast and snacks. The grocery stores nearby didn't open until 8:00. I decided to get some McDonald's, but it didn't open until 9:00. What the hell? I ended up having a nutritious breakfast consisting of water. By now it was 8:10 and my flight was at 9:45. I tried to catch a cheaper bus that took a bit longer because it made more stops versus the airport bus. It would have been 1.25€ versus 8€. Whenever I asked, everyone said it was 8€ to go to the airport. I caved in ... read more

A community run through the centre of the city prevented us from early embarking on the Hop On/Off bus to see the remainder of Valencia city. So we legged it up to the bull-fighting arena at Plaza Toros. Unfortunately and unlike Barcelona, Valencia still actually hold bull-fights in this ring which was built in 1850. A pretty impressive arena for its day I am sure but home to some horrible cruelty to these animals. A museum attached shows some of the regalia and ceremony of the event but the video is enough to put you off the whole idea fairly quickly. Hopefully it will continue to lose popularity and eventually pass into history as a male macho anachronism. Before jumping on the bus we came upon another troupe of (we think) community group Flamenco dancers providing ... read more

Brilliant planning and attention to fine detail has landed us smack in the middle of old town Valencia right next to Iglesia Y Torre de Santa Catalina and just down the road from the Valencia Catedral. Lots of attractions are within walking distance and so many of the buildings are very ornate dating from centuries ago in many cases. The city grew wealthy in the mid 18th - 19th centires by becomng a centre for spinning of silk from China with big volumes of trade to the rest of Europe arising from this. The city hall, post office and police station are classic examples of these public buildings. A feature of this day was exploring the Central Market built in the 1920's to replace a much smaller affair. This is a significant structure showing again the ... read more

Not one of our better days. Picked up the hire car after navigating to Sants Estacion. Headed out of town on the freeway getting used to driving on the RHS of the road and a very different set of car controls. Decided to pull in to get some petrol and re-check ourroute etc. when some dude decides to slash our tyre to create a distraction so he could rob one of us of handbag containing passport, credit cards, licence and some money. Apart from the mental shock and card cancellation phone calls etc of all this we lost the rest of the day being taken back to Barcelona airport for a replacement vehicle as the tyre could not be repaired and completing a Police Report. Worst of all we had no time left and had to ... read more

First bags out this morning. We are leaving Barcelona and heading towards Valencia. Make our set time and on the bus 2 minutes early so that is good. Drive out of town and away down south. We stop for a break and chat with a kiwi couple. Oh dear, 6 degrees comes to play again. Their son lives in a little country town in Victoria called Mildura. Hmm. Comparisons, turns out he is a consultant to the almond industry and the daughter in law used to work in a little boutique in town, Fine and Sunny. This is one of Chris's favourite shops when in Mildura. Hmm, interesting. Our lunch stop is at a beach resort called Peniscola. Official population 7000 but in summer this swells to well over 70000. Lots of holiday homes here. A ... read more
