The last couple of days (Friday and Saturday) have been interesting in that we are finding out about the separate communities in Valencia and how they would impact our lives. Our realtor gave us a couple of locations that we could look at to decide where we wanted to live. We looked at the old city of course but prices there are going to be expensive and contain a lot of tourist traffic. It would be the most interesting place to live though. We looked at a more residential community with local groceries and shops near the City of Sciences, and we looked at a more commercial area with shopping malls, pools, commercial buildings etc., which we nixed right off the bat. One interesting apartment on the edge of old town had promise and we looked ... read more

We have FINALLY ARRIVED but how we got here is a significant part of the journey. Over the next post or so I will talk about that journey. But first a little about the last 24 hours. Of course, up until last night we had not slept for about 40 hrs. The transatlantic flight went through some significant weather so we didn't get much sleep on the plane. Once we arrived in Valencia, we grabbed a cab at the airport and headed to our AirBNB. That was about 6pm. So we unpacked a bit and headed to a lite dinner. We had beer and wine at a local bar but the service was rather slow. I ordered in spanish and finally got served after the bartender and waitress quit laughing. ? Oh well.... This morning (Friday) ... read more

Yes we have been talking about it for years, but we are finally doing it. Kathy and I are sitting at the Lexington airport waiting on our plane to Detroit, then to Amsterdam, then to Valencia. This is the beginning of the journey, not the end. Last night we stayed at a local hotel and had dinner at Azur to celebrate the continual adventure. Today, Kathy closed on her house and sold her car and we rode the hotel shuttle to the airport. Since we are moving, we have been packing and repacking, weighing and reweighing in an attempt to get exactly the things we want to take. This is worst than backpacking. We have both been struggling with how to juggle what we want compared to what we need and how to get that into ... read more

Xativa…

Ever walked around with a ridiculous wide smile constantly across your face whilst at the same time pinching yourself? We have. Well, as the day wore on those smiles became ridiculously wider and the pinching began leaving marks; that’s how much we were enjoying ourselves in this beautiful small city of Valencia. The universe smiled on us all day. After a night of severe thunder, lightning and heavy rain we were greeted with sunshine, clear sky and a very slight refreshing breeze when we stepped out this morning at 9am. Most of the Valencians were still in bed. The roads and streets practically deserted and no cafés open for a coffee. We headed towards the old part of the city as we were to meet our walking tour guide at 10.30am so we aimed to use ... read more

Ever ridden a bike with a ridiculous wide smile constantly across your face whilst at the same time pinching yourself? We have. Well, as the day wore on those smiles became ridiculously wider and the pinching began leaving marks; that’s how much we were enjoying ourselves in this beautiful small city of Valencia. We hired bikes for 12 hours – 9am to 9pm – and, oh how good a decision was that, as we covered an enormous amount of ground at a very relaxing cadence. That also resulted in us returning to the hotel much fresher and in far, far less pain than the previous evening. The Turia Gardens were gifted with our presence again as we used the cycle path to head down its length to coast and the Mediterranean Sea. Many social cyclists and ... read more
