Wow! What more can we say?!! This was our first trip up into the mountains and what a journey it was. The sun was shining as the autumn colours were just beginning to come out in force. It was almost perfect. We drove along the road to France and soon found ourselves completely taken aback by the beauty that was unfolding around us. Our first major stop was the town of Burgete. We had a good walk around and a bit of lunch in one of Ernest Hemingway's old hangouts. The town is lovely and we have vowed to return and stay over in a casa rural so we can do some walking in the area. We were also amazed by the murals on the walls of public buildings - even the bank had one! Further ... read more

Hi, Well the difference between Tapas and Pinchos are Tapas are free. Need I say what I eat. Tapas are finger foods. Mostly olives, cheese, bread. Our day starts early 5 and we are out by 6 on the road. We see the sun rise every morning becuase by 2 pm its hot. Very hot. We have been walking the mountians through wine vineyards and olive tree plantations. A lot of churches and old ruins. During the day we pick and eat fresh figs, blackberries, grapes, from the wineries amoung other things. The views are breathtaking. By 2 pm we have to look for a place to stay. We stay in Albeguers. These are hostels, so we sleep in a commune type place. Bunkbeds. We have to wash our cloths each day by hand and hang ... read more

I wish I knew what you were looking for Might have known what I´d have found (Under the Milky Way - The Church) So I walked the first stage today, climbed almost 1400 metres, and am still alive to tell the tale. I´m now at the hostel at Roncevalles (as in The Song of Roland) and feeling much better. Woke at 3.00 and didn´t get back to sleep. I felt a bit anxious about it until I realised this was 1.00 in the afternoon in Melbourne. I´m anticipating no such problems tomorrow. I´m very tired. But I was the first person to arrive at the hostel this afternoon, passing even those people who started 8km down the road. I am now a god to these people. I also might overdose on a surfeit of beauty... The ... read more

Woke up early to start our 2nd day. Still takes us a while to pack up the backpacks am sure we will get the hang of it and get quicker. We all had coffee and Muffins which Nere had bought from the shop the day before for breakfast. The standard breakfast offered is normally fresh fruit yoghurt muffins crossonts dry toast with butter and jam. coffee which is always luke warm and mostly milk. Ole started walking before us then Nere. The weather was cold but the sun was shining. We had some drizzle of rain enough for us to try out our rain coats. The scenery is amazing so green and hilly. We spent most of the day climbing up and up. We walked past so many rivers and creeks. Little waterfalls from the side ... read more

Well, we finally got here on Wednesday! John dropped us off at Standsted and we got to Biarritz at 3 o´clock in the afternoon. We took a taxi to St Jean Pied de Port and checked in to our hostel L´Esprit du Chemin. It was very nice and Huberta and her husband were very welcoming. They provided dinner plus apperitifs and wine for a very small charge! We met a whole selection of people there, all of whom had different reasons for doing the Camino. We had our pilgrim passports issued and stamped and were advised not to go to Roncevalles via Orisson because the weather was too bad and there was too much snow. Day 1 St Jean to Valcarlos. Set off early and had a very pleasant and gentle walk through the old town ... read more

"Noni Carry Me!" April 2: Orrison to Roncesvalles Over the mountain and through the woods to... well we certainly are not on our way to Grandmother's house... (I am just thinking about my Grandmother because I titled this blog for her). Yesterday and todays hike, which many people do in one full swoop, have been said to be the most challenging day(s) on the Camino. From St Jean to Orrison I walked straight up up up up up for 8km, and then today we hiked over the Pyrenees Mountains. It was unlike anything I have ever done or seen before in my entire life. It felt like a dream... Journal Entry-------------------- Monday April 2nd, 2012 My whole body hurts so bad! Evidently yesterday and today are the hardest days. As hard as today was, it was ... read more

You can look at photos, read books, upload Blogs and hear stories but there is nothing like the actual being there and this is certainly very true for the El Camino de Santiago de Compostela, the 790 kilometre pilgrimage from St Jean Pied du Port at the foothills of the French Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in the Galicia region of Spain. As much as the start point for El Camino de Santiago de Compostela is St Jean Pied de Port, we started our Camino a few days earlier in Sarlat France with a pleasant pre Camino celebration. There were a few of us celebrating a friends birthday and we were all staying in a renovated 3 story home in the old town area of Sarlat, France. Here we were only a few moments walk ... read more

At the moment, I am at possibly the most luxurious hostel ever. It was built last year for the special holy year when lots of people walked the camino. They have thoght of everything. I have had a really nice time. I arrived at Saint Jean Pied de Port yesterday afternoon and met two girls, one from Canada, currently living in Boston and one from Germany, currently living in Switzerland. No one I have met until now have lived at the same place for all their lives. I found a place to sleep, assemblied my unicycle, ate dinner with the two girls I met at the first hostel (run by an older very gentle woman) and three other guys, a first mate from Sweden, a cyclist from Germany, and a really nice guy from Los Angeles. ... read more

"Buen Camino" Happy Saint Patricks Day: Searching For Some Ibuprofin And A Green Beer In No Particular Order. Linsey and I hit the road on Tuesday morning determined to make it to Puente de la Reina, the small town that evaded us the day before due to the imposibility of the metric system. Kilometers? We made the 4 mile trek into town and toured the local church which was built in the 12th century. It was quite a spectacle but unfortunately we only had 5 minutes to tour the town, grab some bread, and start a return hike back to Pamplona to catch a bus. We had 5 hours to hike 12 miles back up and over a mountain and into Pamplona. Linsey seemed optomistic but I asked the Priest for a little spiritual assistance. The ... read more
