After visiting the Erro homestead, Paulina, Javier and I took off to head to France. Yes, we are that close! From Ureta we drove through the colorful hills that were blossoming with fall colors. There were horses in the fields (the big, worker horses that are thick and full of muscle!), cows every which way, including in the roads! No joke, as we were driving, a herd of cows without any person leading them, came trotting down the road. We were forced to stop the car because these huge animals were coming straight on! It was definitely an experience...And the cows here are "real" cows. They are big and not living in small confined places, no, no, they are eating the grass and being jolly. We arrived to the top of a mountain and Paulina said ... read more

Early Start Given that I was now about five or so kilometres behind schedule, I decided I would get an early start for Pamplona from Zubiri. That wasn´t as much of a mistake as not stopping at Larrasoana for desayuno. There seemed to be plenty of places along the way that would have something open. Not so. It wasn´t until Arre de Trinidad at nearly 1:30pm that I actually got to have something to eat! Was just a bit peckish. Travelling Companions I will fill in some of the details later, but given the nature of the Camino, I thought that I might tell you about who I met along the way. This might need some revision of previous entries, but I am sure you will cope with that. Today was more interesting because I walked ... read more

Desayuno In discussing the trip before we left, Wal had made much of the practice of departing early, walking an hour or so, and stopping at the first town for desayuno (breakfast). I expressed my doubts about this at the time, but was assured this was a good pattern. So when I found that Wal and Martin were drinking their vending machine coffee, I must say I was just a little surprized. We did stop at the first town, where a bar was doing a roaring trade serving desayuno to a mix of some locals and a hoard of peligrino. So there was some truth in what Wal had said, after all. Departing ways Shortly after we left the town, Martin and Wal pushed ahead of me, and I had mixed company for the rest of ... read more

Disorientation I know I do it - I think the sun is in the north. Its the natural place for it to be, isn´t it? So I had a rough start to what was going to be a long day and added between four and five kilometres by going north, back into France, instead of South, on to Spain. The climb Route Valcarlos may not appear to have the climb that you get from Route Napoleon, but by the time one has crossed the river and climbed up and down ridges, it must be going close. Soon I began to regret every downward slope, knowing that whatever small elevation change there was would have to be recovered. The route map I had been given the previous evening carefully avoided too much of the detail. The route ... read more

The journey has begun. Our starting point on the Camino de Santiago was a place called Roncevalles a small Spanish village in the Pyrenees close to the French boarder. It has felt like a long time coming since we first conceived of the idea to begin our year of travels walking alongside the committed pilgrims that complete the 790km to Santiago de Compostella (in the North Western corner of Spain) each year. After two days we have reached Pamplona the city famous for its bull run. It has not been without early help from the locals that we have made a successful start on this long path. From our bus driver to Roncevalles who after his shift took us in his car to our campsite. Also, from our host at the Refugio, a hostel for pilgrims, ... read more

Camino de Santiago 1st - 25th June, 2008 What is the Fountain of Wine? More about that later! Buen Camino means Good Camino - pilgrims will often say it to other pilgrims, wishing you a good journey/good walk on the Camino de Santiago trail. The Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St. James is a 783km pilgrimage route accross northern Spain. The route passes through the regions of Navarra, La Rioja, Castilla and Gailicia and finishes in Santiago de Compostela. Back in the 9th centuary a religious hermit followed a mysterious shining star which led him to the remains of the apostle James(known as Santiago in Spanish) the Greater. Scallop shells are worn by pilgrims on the journey to Santiago de Compostela. St. James wore scallop shells on his hat and tunic and ... read more
