Halloween in Spain is not at all like it is in the states. It's not celebrated nationally and many people from Spain tend to look down on it. Maybe we got lucky then, being where we are, because there were actually Halloween celebrations in Salamanca. As much as I would love to think that there was any meaning to it, I realized early on in the night that Halloween is another way for bars to make money here. I couldn't tell you whether or not that's entirely different from America. When there's something to celebrate about, there's money to be made! There were no children trick-or-treating in the streets. However, there were some older kids (by this I mean tall enough to get into the bars) that were dressed up and some of the people from ... read more

Spain has a number of municipalities that fall into the category of “Spanish Town with a Castle and a Cathedral.” Although we had already visited what is perhaps the most famous of these towns - Toledo, we also had been strongly recommended several times to also visit Segovia, another one of these towns. I must say, that we were not disappointed. Segovia is a really pretty, clean, bright happy town. I took lots of pictures just of the streets and surrounding countryside, which seemed nicer than Toledo. We walked down one of the main avenues until we found our first destination, some Roman aquaducts that were in nearly perfect condition. It was really cool to see something so impressive and so sturdy that was not just centuries, but millenia old! Amazingly enough, the aquaducts were built ... read more

We have decided to head to Salamanca and shorten our trip to Madrid, so it is goodbye, for now, to Portugal. We head north and east through the mountains of Portugal and the rain. The road, which is a major artery for commerce, is under construction. We know when we return next time, it is going to be smooth travelling. But today, it is nightmarish, between the heavy trucks and the cars and rain, the stoic Herv at the wheel tires of the "splash". We pass through acres of burned forests of eucalyptus and pine. What I had seen from the airplane and thought was stone is a combination of stone bared by fire and ask covered ground. The iberian peninsula has been in a drought for two years and both Spain and Portugal have suffered. ... read more

After a painful two hour bus ride (painful because I had zero sleep the night before and couldn't sleep on the bus possibly due to excitement, or the loud laughter of the kids in the back of the bus watching Dave Chapelle... in the seat behind me and to the back end) and a quick stop at some little "truck stop" town, we were greeted by the Rio Tormes and sight of the Catedral Nueve y Vieja. "Ooo"s and "Aah"s filled the bus. Pointer fingers seemed to be strangly drawn to different sights, buildings, and people. I felt the urge to bust out of the doors and run off the bus. 'Finally! Our destination!' The bus took us through a few cobble-stone streets before pulling off to the side of one where we were to meet ... read more

have had a lovely and relaxing few days here in salamanca. off to madrid this arvo for a few more days now. salamanca is a very picturesque university town, with lots of sandstone buildings and cobbled streets (of course, cobbled streets....) lisbon was a great city too. had heard a few bad things about it before i arrived, but it managed to outdo it's expectations for me. it's quite a sprawling city - so i had to walk lots!! went to a nice castle that overlooks the city and also did a day trip out to sintra. a very quaint little town with lots of palaces and castles!! a very nice day out. had a bit of a crazy night on the last night in lisbon - a friend's birthday. good fun though. i put some ... read more

¡Hola amigos! This past weekend, I went to Salamanca with my university here in Madrid. It wasn´t quite as exciting as the last weekend (I know my parents will be glad to hear that one!) but still pretty interesting. Friday night, I went to see "Embrujada" (the movie "Bewitched") in Madrid with some friends. Then after that, we went to a "chocolateria" to eat chocolate y churros. Basically, they give you a plate of churros (which is fried sweet bread sticks, a lot like a funnel cake...) and this cup of hot chocolate. But the "hot chocolate" isn´t your normal hot chocolate, it´s a cup of pure melted chocolate!! YUM!! sooo good! It´s a tradition here for the Spanish to eat chocolate y churros on the weekends after going to the bars or the discotecas. The ... read more

what a lovely summer this has been. now i am in salamanca, and it has been nice being away from the big city of madrid. i spent the afternoon laying out by the pool, and tonight by pure chance we found out that thievery corporation was playing in this small town. i just got back from the show, which was pretty sweet. good music, great vibes. i have been in such a relaxed mood here, i don't even have pictures of salamanca. so check out this postcard shot from avila. now this, i think, is what every summer should be like. okay, so it's a little hot. but nonetheless. que magnifico!... read more
