Well, howdy, ya’ll! Long time, no post! I haven’t updated in two weeks because I haven’t had enough blog-ish material for separate entries, so I’m lumping it all into one long one. Happy reading! Last weekend (the 11th), just about everyone left for various individual trips… Thursday was some holiday in the region of Valencia (although no matter how many times it was explained to me, I still don’t understand it), so everything was closed for the day, and most people took a long weekend. I stayed here, though, as Saturday was the Volvo Ocean Race! Daman and I went down at around 10, and the line to get in was enormous! It was really rainy and windy, but the crowds poured in. The boats took off around 11, but, like the weekend before, just sailed ... read more

After spending the day in Salamanca, I needed to drive through to my next town of stay, Segovia. On the way to Segovia, I decided to stop by Avila and see as much as the town I could. This town was probably one of the coolest towns you can drive up upon. As the picture shows, it is basically a town put within the castle walls. The border area between Spain and the Muslim empire is now being shown much clearer. The walls were built in 1090, and are still in good condition! This town is built up in a mountainous area, overlooking much of the plains in Spain. Contained within are various cathedrals dating from the 12th century. As usual with this town in Spain, I did not get a chance to see all ... read more

So it was about time that I took a trip to visit Louis in Ávila. I managed to catch the last us and got there just in time for the trip to the kebab and then, the bars!!! Despite it's size, Ávila seems to have a healthy proportion of young people and therefore...bars! Hurray! Besides that, Shannon had appointed herself my winglady for the weekend. If perhaps I had mastered the knack of Spanish chat-up, we may have made an indestructable pair. But as it is. Im absolutely bloody useless at pulling in Spain. Ah well. It was a good night and we crashed back home at around 4am. NOt too shabby. The next day was a rather tender affair. I woke up snuggling with the cat Pantera, and spent the rest of the morning gingerly ... read more

On Friday, two of my friends and I decided to take a trip to Avila, a town that is north-west of Toledo. We took the AVE to Madrid, then got on a bus to Avila. The bus ride was about an hour and a half. Avila is much colder than Toledo, and there are mountains with snow on them! It also snowed (for about 3 minutes) during our bus ride! The best part was we saw these signs on the road that warned of snow (I tried to get a picture but it didn't work!). Avila is a really beautiful city. It is kind of like Toledo, only much flatter, and the streets aren't nearly as narrow. It is also surrounded by a stone wall like Toledo. The best part of the trip was that we ... read more

So yesterday we took a day trip to Avila. All was going fine. I was at Kastin's house getting ready and took out my cell phone to play a game and then slipped it into my pocket. After we arrive in Avila, Pablo gets a phone call from our friend saying she has my phone. I have never felt so confused in my entire life!!! Apparently it slipped out of my pocket when I got change out at the newstand to buy a newspaper after we left Kastin's house. What happened was some lady found my phone and called the first person in my address book, Angela. Angela then met the lady, got my phone, and gave it to our other friend who we were meeting that night! Then she called Pablo to let him know ... read more

Not the sound of the alarm clock , matt jumped up to look outside , pouring with rain, quick decision looking across to all the other pilot staying , with there necks stretched to the heavens , yep unanimous decision by all , back under the duvet. Resurfacing round 11am the dreaded thought I was running out of clean clothes again, this time armed with back up Matt was given the induction session to the “good old days” although one to see positives you do get a great suntan while slaving away. Felling the need for more discovering the sun was shining upon us so we made our way to Avila a much larger Spanish town 72kms form camp. Arriving at 5pm to a city that was fortified by a spectacular wall. We had a ... read more

Hola amigos! Como estas? See my Spanish IS improving!! Like I have said before it is not easy picking up the language seeing as I am teaching English, planning lessons in English and everyone I live with speaks English. Even my roommate from Mexico wants to always speak English so he can improve, but that doesn't mean I am not trying. Last weekend, I spent almost the entire weekend surrounded by the Spanish language. It was difficult but necessary. Friday night I went to a friend of Marcos' (my Mexican roommate) for a little while. Everyone there was from Mexico so Spanish was the language of the night. It was difficult at first because there were about 10 different conversations going on at once, so I had to focus on one and listen carefully. I will ... read more

It’s hard to imagine Poor Richard making himself at home in Spain. The man who found health, wealth and wisdom in “early to bed, early to rise,” wouldn’t know what to make of the erratic hours, the endless dinners, the mid-day siestas. One morning in Avila I decide to get an early start, leaving my pensión at half-past nine. I have some work to shoot off at the Internet Café, which apparently posts its horarios in the window as a suggestion. When the clerk totters in on four-inch heels at a quarter-past ten, wiping wisps of immaculate hair from her face, she all but gives me a look that says, “Boy, I’m sure glad I didn’t roll out of bed when you did.” By half-past ten the Internet’s on the blink, but she offers no ... read more

Mais ... read more
