We cannot complain about the weather, for the sun shines every day. It gives an enormous heat that makes it nice to visit churches that are here mostly museums as well. We took most of the second day to visit the Cathedral, that houses lots ot treasures, in the way of paintings from El Greco, van Dyk and other famous artists. The church itself is started in the Visigothic times ,which is from 600 till 800 A.D. Tradition has it that the Blessed Virgin Mary decended in a particular place in the Basilica. There is a piece ot the original Altar kept in a glass case. Another item worth mentioning, is the painting of El Greco above the Altar, called El Expolio, dated 1587. There is a whole gallery of El Greco paintings in the Sacristy. ... read more

We left Granada and were quickly on the freeway towards Madrid. No Toll road but a very nice road that took us all the way to Toledo. Arriving early afternoon that gave us an oppertunity to see some parts of this amazing city. The story will be a bit short, for the internet is not available in our room, so we are sitting in the lobby to do this travelblogg. The walls around Toledo are mostly intact and of an amazing seize. As well as the gates. There are several of them. It was conquered by the Romans in 190 B.C. From that period you find foundations pillars etc from that city. From than on we see the Barbarians , the Moors and Christians taking on this city. Ferdinand the First," The Saint" commenced some of ... read more

Toledo We are beginning our last full day today. It will be another hot one, 108F! What may save us however is the cloud cover and the very low humidity. Today we drive to Toledo, the former capitol city of all Espana. Toledo was the seat of power until 1650’s when the capitol was moved to Madrid. Toledo of old is beautiful. Close to the origin of the Tagus, the same river that flows all the way to Lisbon, Toledo was a fortified city built on a hill and surrounded by walls. The city was very defensible, with a river on one side, a mountain on the other and 25 foot walls all around. The city is still home to 70,000 people who live and work within the ancient walls. Toledo is noted to hand tooled ... read more

Today we went around the city again. Our first stop was the Cathedral, which is absolutely breathtaking. There was a room dedicated to the clothing of the bishops of Toledo. There were robes in-laid with gold, sapphires, and pearls. I mean countless man-hours spent on every piece. There was a gigantic atrium with ornate marble and carved stone. The stained-glass windows were decorated perfectly depicting various biblical scenes. It is the fist gothic-style cathedral that we saw and I have to say it was another place that I cannot forget. After walking out the Cathedral a guy approached us on the street and offered to take us to an art workshop. We said sure, knowing that we would not buy anything. He took us to a Damascene art co-op, a place where artists come make their ... read more

Although I haven't finished writing blog 3, it's time to move on. I'm writing from the train on an adventure to Toledo! We don't have classes on Fridays, so at 9AM I left the train station in Alcala with my friends Corey and Sarah for a lovely day trip. It has been quite an adventure. We needed to take a train from Alcala to Madrid, buy tickets, and take another train to Toledo. However, we accidentally took the first train in the opposite direction! Hey, nobody else got to see Toledo AND Guadalajara today!! We had lots of time though to exchange our love histories and get to know each other better. After finally arriving in Madrid we learned how to buy train tickets, order coffee/breakfast at a cafe, and find a train. From various experiences ... read more

On Friday we took our final excursion: to Toledo. Toledo is the most beautiful city that I have seen in all of Spain. It is nestled up on a hill surrounded by a river. We left Segovia after our final class and went to the city in the afternoon. In the afternoon we had free time to do whatever we wanted to do after we were shown around the city. I decided to go with a couple friends and the professors to a cathedral and Synagogue. The coolest part about this was the Cathedral had been converted into a bar and a club. However all of the decorations and lighting was free standing so that if need be the entire building could be converted back to its original state. The synagogue was one of the best-preserved ... read more

I wonder what would happen if I ever took the time to analyze when I actually write these blogs. If I had to hazard a guess I would probably say they always come out when I'm busiest and my attention is desperately needed elsewhere. In short, it's a damn good thing I don't plan on being a nuclear safety technician someday, but also that if I'm starting this now something stressful must be down the road. In this case, I just accepted a second job, and I'm leaving for my first visit to my home in Washington D.C for the first time in a year, but worries for another time. In the mean time, and more interesting by far is my continued nostalgia trip and a rehashing of my time in Spain! For the record, this ... read more

You know how in the US when you are walking towards someone and you’re eventually going to walk into eachother, so you both go right? Yeah…. That doesn’t happen here, they just run into you. Cars do not stop, and neither do the people. I got literally no sleep last night, our last night in madrid, because our hotel faced the street and everyone was running through the streets screaming and yelling and partying. The other thing that is way weird to me at this point is they literally kiss everyone. When our tour guides picked us up they gave us all los besos, which is basically rubbing your cheeks together, and making an extremely obnoxious kissing smooch sound in their ear and then doing the same on the other side. It’s different from the French ... read more

The past 7 weeks I've been revisiting old familiar places around and outside Madrid. I am headed home in 3 weeks, but not without paying Toledo a visit. This "El Greco" fav city has so much to offer, and not a tad bit difficult to visit from Madrid. Like Segovia and Avila, it is just a short train or bus ride away. It's Been 10 Years Has it been 10 years? Back In 2002, I traveled to Toledo for the first time with my nephew and good friend. I enjoyed that tripbut this recent one even more. At the time, we joined a tour group and allowed ourselves to be herded around this lovely city brimming with art, history and culture. I remember the winding narrow alleys. The many churches and museums, shops selling jewelry so ... read more

www.thetattooedtraveler.com The more I visit sleepy, little, backwater towns of Europe— like Sienna, Bruges, and Toledo— the more I love them. Once political and economic powerhouses, these places were forgotten by time only to be rediscovered by tourists centuries later. Like mummies, they’re preserved in the state they were in, seemingly unaffected by centuries of modernization. Yes, they’re touristy— most of their economies center on tourism— but they’re also a window into the past. Toledo is only a 30-minute train ride from Madrid, making it an easy day trip, but I decided to spend a night and take my time exploring. It’s important to know a bit about Toledo’s complex history to fully appreciate its splendor. The Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and finally Christians all ruled this impressive hilltop town at one time or another. It was ... read more
