We decided to take a few days to get away from the boat and see a city in Spain that we have not been to before (and there are a lot of them yet to discover). We picked Toledo even though it would take 3 train rides to get there, but found that the connecting times would be short and make for an easy trip. Toledo is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites, so we knew already that there would be plenty of history to absorb. We started off with a short bus ride to the train station in Cartagena. We know we can walk there as we did that the day we bought the tickets, but with the heat decided it was definitely worth the 2.40 euro total for both of us to ride ... read more

TOLEDO, 10/22/19 After our last amazing breakfast in Madrid we were on the bus by 8:30am and headed to the city of Toledo in Castilla-La Mancha, an hour south of Madrid, passing large old homes and almond and olive groves. As we approached the first vista of Toledo, our bus had to jockey into position among the numerous other tourist buses so we might get out and get our first glimpse of ancient Toledo across from the Tajo River. This “first glimpse of Toledo” is the same view of Toledo painted by El Greco, which is why every tour bus was in line to stop here. Its natural moat explains why Toledo, which means top of the hill, was the first capital city of Spain before the capital was moved to Madrid in 1652. Under cloudy ... read more

We covered quite a lot of ground today! We departed from Madrid this morning and watched as the landscape changed from arid blonde plains and olive groves, to rocky (even snow-dotted!) mountain tops, to the teal coastline of the Costa del Sol. We had a brief stop in the region of La Mancha where Cervantes was inspired to write Don Quixote. We found manuscripts of the novel, an original letterpress, and statues of the errant knight all around the adorable cobblestone courtyard. By afternoon, we had reached our main destination of the day: the palace of La Alhambra. Built by Charles V for his lover, we marveled at the Muslim decor on the insides of the palace: geometric designs and bright colors are used in lieu of images of nature, lest they attempt to replicate God's ... read more

Inner Conflict In trying to decide whether or not to attend the bullfight, there were a lot factors to consider. I knew it was a cultural experience that is very important to the Spanish people. Violence is not something that I handle well, especially when it’s real. On TV, I know it’s not real, so I don’t have a problem with it, but seeing it in person would be too much. It’s hard on this trip in general to balance personal values with desire for cultural experiences. A Rift During this decision, there was a bit of disagreement among the group about who was going and why they were going. Even some people who were not keen on the violence, but wanted to go for the cultural experience. This was conflicting for other people, like me, ... read more

I Don’t Belong Here No matter how hard I try, I don’t really belong here; I am just a visitor. This was made very apparent to me at the Spain vs Sweden soccer game. Standing there with a red, blue, and yellow jersey on, I felt like I belonged, but then they started playing the national anthem and I did not know it. This is another example of my lack of knowledge affecting my cultural experiences. I now know that when I enter into another culture again, I will change my CQ strategy to include more study of the practices that will help me fit in better. I Was Spotted During this game, we interacted with many people rooting for both teams. As with my other posts, I wondered what they were thinking of us. I ... read more

Granada was the opportunity to reset we needed. Nacho, a teacher, had given us a generous welcome to a 600 year old town apartment, in the nick of time we got to an open supermarket, and the possibility of getting another car was presented by Enterprise. We had smiles on our dials. Despite the location, it was surprisingly quiet for a Friday and Saturday night. Like logs we slept, waking to still air and clear skies. This morning time was ‘do anything’ time. I was keen to bank a swim whilst here, and off I went, reliant on a Google search, and the conflicting information about opening hours with the maps.me app. Piscina Arabial just under 2km from Calle Pages had a portly older receptionist. I was passed a card itemising the rules, but señor had ... read more
