- Ach so. Und wieder ... read more

The following day, we went to Toledo which was about an hour drive southwest of Madrid. Toledo is this old little town on a hill that is surrounded on three sides by water and the fourth side by walls. Due to its position, it was very easy to defend and was the capital of Spain for a long time. For many years it was home to three different religious groups all living in relative harmony - Christians, Jews and Muslims. Because of this harmonious living arrangement (granted, this didn’t last forever but prior to the late middle ages/early Renaissance), there are influences from all three groups. Apparently, many of the builders at the time were Muslim which meant that many of the buildings – religious buildings included, were in the a more Arabic/Moorish style. These tended ... read more

Toledo is about a one hour drive from Madrid and a very worthwhile day trip it was despite the 39-40 degrees and some uphill footslogging. First settled by the Romans in 170 odd BC and then a place that eventually housed Muslims, Jews and Christians harmoniously together in the one relatively small but well fortified town for many centuries. A lot of the buildings are rebuilds from Roman dwellings completed some several hundred years ago and some effort has been expended in retaining the style and character from earlier times. A modern construction has been added housing a six level escalator system to convey the tens of thousands of visitors this city attracts up to the hilltop from the surrounding plain area. We were quite lucky to visit when we did as the next day was ... read more

After a quick breakfast at a little coffee shop we gathered up our suitcases and headed downhill to the parkade. Once on the road and heading east we stopped in the town of Aranjuez for a coffee and to view the palace grounds before continuing onto Cuenca. Aranjuez is a name of a song Jim plays on his guita, so we wanted to see it. We passed through grain fields and vineyards and forests on our route. The city of Cuenca started as a fortified settlement on a steep bluff between two river canyons. Our little hotel was in the old town, high on the bluff. We checked in and then went to a very nice restaurant for lunch. In the evening we headed out to see the principal sights, the Hanging Houses and the old ... read more

Up early and off to Madrid to return our home exchange partners' vehicle and pick up a rental car. Even with gps it was a bit trying getting around and out of Madrid. Once out of the city we enjoyed a one hour drive south to Toledo. Our boutique hotel was located in the old city on one of the narrow winding streets, so we parked in a local parkade. The parkade was a ten minute walk uphill on narrow cobblestone streets in 38c heat!! We were very happy to get into our air conditioned one bedroom apartment. After a short rest, we went out and wandered the maze of narrow streets. It is easy (and fun) to get lost here. By arriving later in the day, we seemed to miss most of the big tour ... read more

When I first started thinking about where I wanted to go on this trip, my first thought was Toledo, Spain. Essentially, all the other destinations for my Europe 2017 travels are an outgrowth of that. I was here in Toledo in 2005 and found the city attractive and rewarding. Consequently, today was the day for my return and I was pleased to see some of the same sights as well as some new ones. The train from Madrid is only 30 minutes (and $12) each way, so it's an easy day trip. Toledo has a dramatic setting on a rocky ridge above the Tagus River and this provides lots of great views (see photo). My first stop was the awesome cathedral, perhaps the best one I have ever been in - and I have been in ... read more

We left Barcelona in the morning on a fast train headed to Madrid. The approximately 600 kms journey only took about 2.5 hours. The train was very comfortable although not quite as smooth as the Chinese and Japanese high speed trains we have taken in the past. After leaving the train we found a store to purchase a SIM card for our phone. We then headed back into the station to pick up our hire car. Our hire cars seem to be getting better each time we rent one...this time we ended up with a new Audi A1. We drove out of the station and found our way to the motorway (autovia) to Toledo after only a few wrong turns. The journey to Toledo from Madrid took about an hour. The drive was pleasant as the ... read more
