Can't write much today - mainly because I forgot my computer plug in Madrid, and my laptop is almost out. Fortunately I connect back in Madrid tomorrow, and the hotel has it. Thank God. Toledo today, just briefly, was brutally hot, although it truly is a beautiful town. A lot like an Italian hill town again. Tons of walking and sweating. Toledo, also, most famously, is the town of El Greco, and his art is everywhere here. There's also an absolutely massive Cathedral. I'll probably write more once I have my cord back, but for now the pictures should suffice. Looks like the battery is holding out, so I'll write a bit more. Caught the train from Madrid Atocha, and actually had to go through security, like an airport. But they did have a terrorist attack ... read more

Toledo was amazing...it's history and beauty captures you. Toledo was the main capital of Spain before they decided to move it to Madrid. Many religions and languages lived side by side, especially the Christians, Jews and Muslims, until someone decided to make it one language and one religion.... MadridCarmen's observations - lots of Peruvians- cops are much hotter in Madrid- cops are more friendly - they protest about everything in Madrid- when you hear and see lots of fire engines and police outside your building then there's probably a fire near by and you should pay attention rather than run for the camera to take pictures- everything is close by in Madrid and you don't really need to use the metro- if you go to a bullfight, the bull ends up dead most of the time- ... read more

TOLEDO Friday 14th to Sunday 16th June 2013 I made my way by metro from the hotel to the Madrid Atroche train station. That part was easy - firstly I lined up in the line for a ticket for 'short' distances only, then, after moving to the correct section of the station, and getting a numbered ticket to be served in order, I waited 45 minutes. More people watching time. Consequently I just missed a train and had to wait nearly 2 hours for the next - the joys of travelling! The train journey to Toledo only takes about 30 minutes and the train reached a speed of 250km/h. After a short taxi ride I was at the Hotel Eurico, in the centre of Toledo, very close to the cathedral. To think that earlier in the ... read more

This is to be our last day here in Los Batanes, Lagunas de Ruidera, so we made it an "in-camp" day. John spent most of it photographing birds (of the feathered variety). There is a large family of Azure-winged Magpies living in the trees around us. These birds live in large families in only two places in the world, one being here in the Iberian Peninsula and the other in Eastern Asia, mostly China. It is the first time that we have ever seen them. When they spread their wings to fly they look magnificent - the wings and tail feathers are the deepest blue. Due to the abundance of leaves now on the trees, our photos of the birds in the trees are not brilliant, so here in this blog we have just included a ... read more

If there was any doubt that this was indeed Quixote country, then the references to Cervantes and his crazy knight are everywhere in Ruidera. For example, "Restaurante Quijote" "Bar Sancho Panza" and we had a beer and a tapa today in the "Plaza Cervantes"! The day started well. Mutley didn´t try any Colditz-style escapes from the awning in the night, thanks to pegging in more tent pegs (which we should have done initially). We drove up to Ossa de Montiel along the "Ruta de Quixote" past many places mentioned in the story and then back around to Ruidera for a walk along the river and a chance to explore this picturesque litlle town. This is a great place for free tapas. So far, every time we have ordered a few beers in a bar we have ... read more

We left home in Alicante yesterday to drive to the Parque Natural de Lagunas de Ruidera en route to Northern Spain. We are taking a slow route to the End of The World, as the Romans named the most westerly tip of Galicia, Finisterre. We shall probably take a week or so to get there and then several weeks to get back home, via the Picos de Europa in Asturias and Cantabria. The journey from our house in Orihuela Costa, Alicante to Ruidera took five hours including stops to walk dogs and drink coffee, just 317 kilometres to our campsite, Los Batanes. The campsite is right beside one of the lagoons and waterfalls in this scenic wonderland of water. We are camped on an island, with roaring rapid water gushing on three sides of us, down ... read more

With another day trip from Madrid, it seems like we prefer the little cosy towns out of the bustling city! My fondest memories of Toledo has got to be the towering Cathedral in the middle of the town centre and the ancient roman bridge. The structures were majestic and has got the uncanny similarity to those in Segovia, though uniquely different. Especially love the shot of the bridge busking in the rising sun. The morning shots were kind of dull due to the weather but when the clouds clear and the sun shone, man, the view of the town was breathtaking in its own rights. A combination of castle buildings and frontiers, old cathedrals and bridges, with more modern day transportation like the tram running within the town area, Toledo is a mix of traditional structures ... read more

Woke up on day #3, feeling use to the time change and ready to start the day. Today’s departure was from the Atocha station, which we walked to and then it was off to Toledo! (Tip, try using the Renfe website to buy your tickets in advance, you can save money. Honestly though, it can be pain too.) When we arrived at the Toledo commuter rail station, we decided to walk into town. Although walking into town was not efficient, it was a cool way to see the city. The one thing about Toledo is that is very confusing to navigate. On our Spanish adventure, it was the only place where we legit got lost (although getting lost in Toledo is part of the fun!) We visited the Cathedral. After about ten minutes, I realized that ... read more

To still linger on in Toledo is easy. We were absolutely stoked with this beautiful medieval walled city. Every corner is worth a picture. We had a couple of incidents there. All Ladies and we say again all Ladies wave their fans to get a bit of coolness. It is real Spanish, so we thought we buy a couple. Not that expensive, two Euro each. We payed the man four Euros. He wrapped them while we looked through his shop. Back at the Hotel we unwrapped them and found only one. We thought if he is so short of money we gladly donated two Euros. Next day by chance we passed the shop, the man in question was not there. Telling the man that was there what happened. We even recognised the wrapping paper. The man ... read more
