Tuesday, April 20 With no where to be, and no alarm to set, I slept like a rock. It was 11:00am when Cyntia woke me, and I swear I could have slept longer. Payardo was waiting for us, so I quickly got ready and then we went out to breakfast at a local cafe. The Spanish typically eat a light breakfast, a big lunch around 3:00pm with lots of tapas-like things, and a light dinner around 10:00pm. I chose a cafe con leche and a big chocolate croissant. YUM. Afterwards, Payardo had to go to work, so Cyntia and I went to the Atocha train station to see about buying our tickets to Toledo, since we'd decided to take a day trip there. Because of all the travel chaos, the waiting room was full to ... read more

Another trip, this time to Toledo, the home of my favourite artist – El Greco. Again the rain was pelting down which spoilt some of the views when we were dropped off at the bottom of the town as the heavy mist stopped us seeing the hill top town. Toledo is an amazing place to look at from a distance and it had the best way ever to get into it… a series of very long escalators which are cut into the rock of the hill. By the time we were near the top they finished and it was heavy footwork up very steep lanes which wind through the outskirts of the town and ends at the Cathedral square. The Primate Cathedral is the most important in Spain and I wish I’d had time to go ... read more

Hi everyone. We have arrived safe and sound in Valencia. Hasta pronto Kate, Keith & Millie, hasta Granada. We were so lucky to start our adventure with KK&M who tought us alot of vaulable Spanish skills such as, using the metro, ordering cervezas and raciones (a plate of tapas), and of course helping us with our Spanish! Muchas Gracias! We picked up the car (VW Golf) in Madrid yesterday and after a slightly hairraising drive through the narrow city streets and peak hour we got onto the highway to Toledo. Thanks Karen (our GPS)!! Richie was wonderful at driving and although a little nervous to start with quickly got used to being on the right side of the road. We explored Toledo which is a fascinating place and full of history. The Cathedral is breathtaking and ... read more

Upon our arrival to Toledo we were greeted with snow--lots of snow. While I am obviously aware that I had just left 27 inches of snow in North Dakota, even the sight of barely seeing it in Toledo made me flinch slightly. Wasn´t I in Spain?? We rolled into our hotel and had about an hour and a half of down time before we began our street tour. We met our guide, Mario--a Toledo native who insisted on referring to many large items along the tour as Texas-Size. All of our tour guides use Spanish when they show us around. We had no difficulties understanding Mario--we were still in Castilla-La Mancha, where the accents were much more intelligible than the ones we would be expecting in a week. Mario showed us around the majority of the ... read more

Hola from Toledo. After a very short week in Virginia, we were off on Monday afternoon for Spain. Unfortunately, Alec's trusty MacBook Pro went South on Sunday, rendering it unusable for the trip. Fortunately, we purchased an extended warranty from Best Buy, so we stopped there on the way to Dulles to drop it off for repair, and to purchase a new MacBook to bring on the trip. Andrew was about due for a replacement anyway, so we'll use it on the trip, then pass it along to him for the Spring semester. Our flight to Spain was via Amsterdam. I have to say that Schiphol airport was one of the most confusing terminals I have visited. We had about 2 hours between flights, and by the time we passed through immigration, checked through security, and ... read more

If you love unusual jewellery and swords you will love Toledo. Originally Spain's capital city (until conquered by the Moors in the 8th century) it's now full of shops, all selling the same kinds of things to tourists BUT it is definitely a beautiful town in its own right. It's interesting to discover Toledo's Jewish, Moorish and Christian history. Such a range! The Jewish museum from 1366 is very interesting (and actually has lots of stuff written in English, which seems to be unusual in Spanish museums). I loved some of the old costumes and the film showing a traditional Jewish marriage. Not to mention the beautifully decorated plasterwork in the first room. Probably the best place I visited in Toledo. Early on in my stay I was lucky enough to stumble across a shop where ... read more

TOLEDO, TOLEDO, TOLEDO...The city is spectacular... Monochromatic, Old, Stone, Rock, River, Perched on a hill, Medieval and maze like, beautiful narrow streets, plazas and cafes, church galore, the old Jewish quarters and synagogues, the monasteries...The list goes on...Every corner was a surprising delight...The Mezquite Del Cristo De La Luz was amazing...In the Moorish style, it was originally a mosque that was converted to a church after the crusades...Toledo is a mix of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim styles...I fell in love with the handmade Gold Plates...The cheapest one is about 300 euros, so I just took a picture of them... As you enter the province of Castile La Mancha, the land of Cervantes and his Don Quixote... you can imagine what landscape Cervantes saw for his story...The earth is yellow spotted with Broccoli shaped trees...It is comical ... read more

After an uneventful trip from OKC, we arrived in Madrid and immediately took our rental car south to Toledo. Toledo has been occupied since the Bronze Age, but gained real prominence during the Roman occupation, when it was the administrative center for the Tarraconensis province. After a period as the capital city of Visigothic Spain, it became an important multicultural center (La Convivencia) under the Caliphate of Cordoba, with vibrant Jewish, Christian, and Muslim populations. When re-taken by Alfonso VI of Castile, the Arabic libraries were not destroyed, and translations into Spanish and Latin of the many Hebrew and Arabic texts allowed that knowledge to be re-distributed throughout Christian Europe. From the 17th century to the late 20th century, economic penury prohibited urban renewal projects, and thus the architectural and cultural riches were preserved. Today, Toledo ... read more

Ola, I woke up early in the morning and caught the fast train to Toledo. The city was one of the most significant throughout history in that part of Spain and was home to Christians, Muslims and Jews alike. As a result, the hilltop city located in a bend in the Tajo River is a reposit of beautiful buildings and enthralling history. The early morning colours in the city were quite remarkable as I made my way up the ramparts, through the walls and into the town. I walked past the Alcazar, which was closed for renovations and then I continued along the narrow winding streets until I came out in the main square in front of the towering cathedral. It was closed until later in the morning, so I continued through the streets to the ... read more
