With its cobblestone streets and medieval walls it is no wonder that the entire city of Toledo is declared a UNESCO world heritage site. For centuries, Christians, Muslims and Jews flourished in this city of three cultures and built an incredible display of churches, monasteries, mosques and fortresses. In addition, Toledo is known for its traditional crafts, including damascene metalwork antique swords and handmade marzipan (sweet almond pastries). With so much to see in Toledo, it feels ironic that our first stop was the bus station. We were thinking about taking day trip to Consuegra, Spain, to see the windmills and the Saffron festival. However, realizing that we would not have much time in Consuegra, we decided to skip the trip. Instead, we headed to Zocodover, the main square. With nothing planned, we decided to take ... read more

On the night before we left Madrid I woke up in a panic! I had a sudden realization that our ticket to Cuenca had us arriving at the station on the outskirts of Cuenca, not right in town like I had studied on Google Earth! As soon as we woke up I fired up the ipad and sure enough, we were to arrive in the Fernando Zobel Station, which was 5 km out of town! I quickly looked up the best way to get into town and felt somewhat calmer after learning that we could take a bus. We then completed the hateful job of packing. Curtis is pretty sure his weighs much more than when we arrived! We tidied up the apartment and arranged and re-arranged our bags until zippers were zipped and loaded onto ... read more

The flight was as usual - irritating things that make you wonder why you travel: the person in front fully reclines her seat the entertainment system isn't working so watching a movie meant if you were able to get one going part way through it flipped to a Korean action movie I had actually forgotten to download my series and movies to the micro chip for my tablet so I could rely on that if there were any problems Second flight must have been testing their refrigeration system out - luckily that was only a 3 hour flight Of course the last half hour I finally fell asleep. Went through the Madrid airport in a dazed fog. We arrived in Terminal 3 and walked to terminal 1 for the rental pick-up - I think I did ... read more

Known as 'The City of Three Cultures' for its rich Muslim, Jewish and Christian histories, Toledo is only half an hour's train ride from Madrid so ideal for a day trip. It has a beautiful walled old town and lovely streets apes and arches, with architectural styles that combine the influences of the Muslim and Christian rulers (Jews don't really get much of a look-in on architecture). Even the train station is a remarkable ornate building. Of course we wanted most to see the Juderia, the old Jewish quarter and were very disappointed to learn that El Transito, the well-known grand restored synagogue is closed on Mondays. We did however see the strangely named Sinagoga de Santa Maria La Blanca which is smaller, simpler and older but also has beautiful Mudejár architecture. It was rather moving. ... read more

Devinez quoi?

The rust coloured earth changed to nutty brown as we moved closer to the hottest part of Spain. It was still difficult driving and we have found we need to get on the road early to miss the hottest parts of the day when the temperature gets up to over 30 degrees. This makes for some pretty steamy driving sessions and we try to get to our campsite of the day early to avoid the worse of it. Our next stop was going to be the hottest place we probably would encounter on the trip but on the way we would head for one of the windiest . I have never read Cevantes novel Don Quixote . Have you? It is the story of the knight from La Mancha who with his trusty compatriate Sancho Panza ... read more

The colour of the day is rust. The earth is as near to rust colour as you could wish to see as we travel closer to our two day stop at Toledo. Toledo is famous for knives and sword production. The Sheffield of Spain or should Sheffield be called the Toledo of Yorkshire. The weather was unbelievably hot as we left Teruel to travel to our campsite El Greco just outside of Toledo. It was hitting just over 30 by mid- day and staying that way without any respite. Even late into the evening it was still hot, hot , hot. We are heading for the hottest part of Spain Cordoba and will be there in a couple of days. We saw eagles soaring high above the fields and the roadsides are still a riot of ... read more

Day 22 April 27, 2014 Are we in Toledo…Ohio? We left our cool dormitory at San Rafael. It was 2 degrees centigrade. I mean COLD! We drove over the Sierra Guadarrama Mountains. Whenever were in Europe and going through some mountain range there are always motorcyclists. Today was no exception 100’s of motorcyclists; they were all over Kirsten zooming around her like flies. After crossing the mountains we were ready for a nice lunch on side of road. We drove and drove and drove. No place was scenic enough. Finally Kirsten hunger won and we stopped. It wasn’t the most scenic but we had lunch. Yum! After lunch we continued and came upon the little village of San Martin. It has a very cool cathedral, I mean like built into the mountain type. So we stopped ... read more
