Probably our most entertaining trip we have encountered!! We flew out of Aberdeen and Edinburgh where we all met up in Amsterdam. We then travelled onto Barcelona on a KLM flight where after a short taxi ride we jumped on a train for a 3 hour journey south to our destination of Castelon which is the nearest town to the Spanish Football Team Villareal. However after only one hour on the train we were met by the local Police at a station in the middle of nowhere where we were taken off the train due to too much noise!! Incredible. We would not be defeated and we managed to source taxis to take us to our destination albeit 100 Euros lighter each in the pocket!!... read more

Today was a sad day :( I woke up and headed to the hostel to pick up my mom, eric, and S.G.N.Mike to take them to Madrid. Eric really wanted to see the Picasso painting Guernica, and fortunately, the Reina Sofia Museum is located right by the Madrid train station. UNfortunately for us, it is closed on Tuesdays (who the heck is closed on a TUESDAY??). I felt bad for him. We didn't have anything else to do in that part of town, so we took the metro to the Hard Rock Cafe in Madrid. That's right, we've eaten at HRC 2 times in the last 4 days.....and yes, it was amazing once again! Our waiter gave us free pepsi refills, and he even gave my mom a free coffee (she almost cried since she has ... read more

Hola again! I am back for the second to last post I will make of my trip, so let´s get to it. The following morning in Granada I awoke at 5:30 to a morning of travel. I took a taxi to the train station followed by a 4 1/2 hour train ride to Madrid a 30 min express train to Toledo, and two buses (one took me to the opposite side of Toledo I needed to go to), which finally put me at the doorstep of my hotel. Apparently the door of the hotel is always locked and the man who runs the place doesn´t seem to be around all the time, so I waited out front for about 20 min, periodically ringing the doorbell until he woke up from his afternoon nap. The room is ... read more

So, not everything is absolutely fabulous in Spain (we can't all stay in 'Stage One' forever!). I have decided to make 2 lists, one venting about what I hate/dislike in Spain, and one about what I really like about Spain. Basically, I am just really bored.... :) Things I HATE..... -the 2nd hand smoke...I am pretty sure my life expectancy has decreased by at least 5 years already -the fact that people don't clean up after their dogs on the street (apparently that's what the street washers are for) -all the hills....my legs are sore! -people staring at me whenever/wherever just because I am "different" -people thinking I don't understand what they're saying -the stupid obreros (construction workers) who cat-call when you walk by -how slow people walk (or how fast my friends walk!) -how being ... read more

Estoy constipada does NOT mean "I'm constipated" in English; it actually means "I'm congested/stuffed up/have a cold" etc. People use it for when they have cold symptoms, which I still have. (FYI, "I'm constipated" in spanish is "estoy enstrenido/a"...in case you were wondering.....) Well, another school week has come to an end. I believe it was week number 7. This will be the 2nd weekend where I am being abandoned by my friends :( There is a school-sponsored weekend trip to Andalucia, but it was a little pricey, so I chose not to go, and Kaley's friend is coming to visit her tomorrow so they are going to Barcelona for the weekend. So where does that leave me?? Here, in Toledo, alone. Tentative plans for the weekend: -sleep...alot....mainly so I can get over this cold so ... read more

Happy Mother's Day to our Mums! Kate This weekend we decided get out of Madrid and explore some of the surrounding countryside. So we got up early on Saturday morning (for the first time since we arrived here) and jumped on a bus to Toledo. No, not a Seat Toledo, or anything else to do with cars, but to the medieval walled city in the region of Castilla-La-Mancha, about 1 hour South of Madrid. Goths, Moors and Catholics Toledo is known as the 'city of three cultures', because during its history it has been an important Visigothic city (the Germanic tribe who brought us goths, black eyeliner and Marilyn Manson), the main city of Muslim Spain and the seat of the Catholic church in Spain. The blend of such diverse cultures has resulted in a ... read more

So, this past week was midterms, even though it is not the middle of the term (we are only about a third of the way through...) I woke up on Saturday feeling like crap, with a sore throat and general unpleasant feelings! So that definitely didn't help with me wanting to study... MONDAY: I had a review session for my Grammar and Composition class, which was nice because we got let out early for once. I was kind of nervous for the upcoming test on Wednesday, but then I remembered it was almost all multiple choice... I had the first half of my Phonetics test, the listening part, so it wasn't too bad... TUESDAY: I don't have classes on Tuesday, but I knew I needed to study alot. First though, I went and got GUILLERMO (see ... read more

So, even though I have some pretty awesome friends here, the time always comes when they eventually have to go back to their houses or school, and I am left alone with no one to talk to. I was starting to think that I needed to buy a pet. You know, a confidant that I can talk to whenever I want, who just listens. Who likes to watch me study, but won't scold me if what I am really doing is playing computer games. Now, when I went to the market today, I had every intention of buying a fish...I really did! But all the guy was selling were goldfish and I really didn't want one of those. So, I ended up getting.......a TORTUGA!!!!! TORTUGA = TURTLE :) His name is Guillermo (it translates to William ... read more

Que tal amigos? Estoy bien. Let's see... It's been raining this week. Which wouldn't really be a big deal until you realize that everything here is on a hill, so you go to walk somewhere and your feet get soaked. eh, no pasa nada... Last weekend was a really busy weekend for my friends and I. On Friday we went on a school trip to El Escorial. It was ok, but the tour was really really long and equally boring. Then Friday night we just hung out and played cards (our new thing to do). On Saturday, I worked on some homework (sort of) and then we went to see the movie Juno. Yes, it was dubbed in Spanish, and no, there were no subtitles. I think I understood most of it, but I'd really like ... read more
