... read more

And holy it is...Pretty much every which way you look is either a church, mosque, or synagogue. Laurel and I took a daytrip there on Saturday, which was only a half hour by train, but felt like a time warp, because Toledo is Medieval style precious. We went to the Cathedral first, which gave me a neck ache from all the looking up I had to do. The architecture in this place is AMAZING. It was built over a period of 250 years, so it combines Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles. We spent about two hours in that place (thanks to our self guided Rick Steve's tour), and probably could have spent more. Other Toledo highlights included world famous marzipan, seeing el Greco and Goya masterpieces, and one heck of a calf workout (that whole city ... read more

So after a month of living in Toledo, I'm feeling more settled and things are more familiar. Here are just some of the useful things I have learnt. *Spain can be cold!!! Don’t let the propaganda fool you! Although there is always sunshine...it is literally freezing here in the morning and at night. *Despite this cold. Very few rented flats will have central heating. And quilts are a novelty. *There is a supermarket in the Casco (or the closest thing we have to one) and its next door to the Teatro de Rojas. *The Teatro de Rojas frequently hosts a Cine club. At the moment they are running a weekly rotation of films celebrating Comedy and Drama from around the world. And it’s reasonable too, only €3. *If you go into any Caja Castilla La Mancha ... read more

This past weekend was an excursion to (you guessed it) Toledo! Famous for its gold, silver, and swords (how all those fit together exactly I have yet to figure out), Toledo is only about 3 hours away from Segovia so the bus ride wasn't so bad. Just wait until Andalucía and Barcelona!! We got to Toledo, picked up our guide Gloria, then proceeded to drive around the city while Gloria told us about its history while pointing out some important landmarks: churches, bridges, etc. After taking the bus tour, we took a small walking tour of Toledo but of churches exclusively. Not much to tell, just a lot of wandering around and talking about the paintings, artists, etc. Since taking art history classes I already know most of the stuff about the paintings, so after the ... read more

Saturday Sept. 1st We woke up somewhat early in order to get on our buses to head into town for an official Toledo tour. We met our tour guide and headed up at least 6 escalators where there was another pretty good view over part of the city. We started walking through some little streets that you see in these first few pictures, and stopped at a small Jewish neighborhood. There wasn’t much different about the area other than the little placard saying it was a “Barrio de la Juderia”. Wish I had more to say about it, but once again the tour was in Spanish and my ability to comprehend it all is under construction. I really enjoyed walking around the town just seeing how things are different there and taking a few pictures. We ... read more

Monday 1st October 2007 is a day I will never forget, and I bet neither will Katie or Stephanie, my two amigas in Toledo. The day started off well. I had a brilliant night’s sleep on Katie’s very broken couch, got to School on time, and thoroughly enjoyed my first day at work at Juan de Padilla secondary school. After school I helped Stephanie collect her things and take them to Toledo, where we took a Taxi to our new flat in San Tomé. Then we transported my pathetically small worldly possessions from Katie’s to the new flat. We were so touched when the landlady had made the beds up for us and put up some curtains, and we were excited to be going shopping for cereal, milk, bread, and some pasta for dinner. We ... read more

For anyone about to embark upon the exhausting task of starting a job in a foreign country, I give this advice. For God´s sake make sure that you are moved and settled into a suitable, secure, and comfortable accommodation before you begin your employment. No shit Sherlock I hear you cry. Well you´d think wouldn´t you?! If asked, I would consider myself on the sensible side of young adults. My parents put a good (if a bit day dreamy) head on my shoulders. And yet I was under the enormous illusion that it would be possible to arrive in Toledo on the Friday, and get settled into a flat before the Monday morning when I was to begin work. What’s more embarrassing on my part is that I thought I could do all this in Spain, ... read more

Friday Aug. 31st, 2007 - After getting a few more hours of sleep we woke up and had to drag our luggage to the elevators. Since everyone else was there from our group was there at the same time we figured it would be quicker to take the stairs, from the 6th floor to the bottom floor. I didn’t realize how heavy my bags were until I carried them that far without rolling suitcases. It was the only time I regretted packing that much, having 2 backpacks and two duffel bags. After loading up all of our group’s many bags into three buses, we left for the city of El Escorial on our way to Toledo. About 30 minutes from our destination, we were able to see a giant cross on the mountainside, which was exactly ... read more

Today we went to Toledo, only a little ways from Madrid. For breakfast we went to Museo del Jamon, which I had seen on the discovery channel. We were all still hungry from the small tapas dinner last night, and all we had for breakfast was one piece of toast and cafe con leche. Toledo was completely different from what I expected. It was a city as an island with a river going all the way around it. It was beautiful, and it's rich history only added on. We first went to a sword making company and I bought a necklace pendant which was handmade and had gold etchings in it. The swords were also incredible to see. It was a Saturday though so the sword maker was not there. Oh well. Then we walked ... read more

Today we explore the ‘Real Spain’, or so the Spanish tour guide keeps telling us. The plan is to jump back in the bus (bugger) and do a day trip to Toledo, the old capital of Spain. Then we spend the afternoon shopping in Madrid and kicking back at the hotel pool. The day started out as planned, and after a quick drive through Madrid we headed to Toledo. Toledo was the capital of Spain since Roman times up until around the seventeenth century when the capital was moved to Madrid by the Hapsburg Emperor. The town hasn’t experienced many changes for the last couple of centuries due to the restrictive landscape and the focus of developments being in the new capital at Madrid (about an hour’s drive away). This lack of development has meant that ... read more
