Fleury says: In Toledo (half hour train ride from Madrid) we stayed at a lovely little hotel overlooking this beautiful cathedral thanks to recommendation from Kez & Gaz. We went for a walk around Toledo & through the cathedral & although it was really pretty, after a few hours we were wondering what to do with ourselves. So we bought a bottle of vino & went back to our room & proceeded to get drunk while looking at the view from our room & solving the worlds problems. We had a great time. Although it was really pretty, we found it a bit of a tourist trap, the only people that lived there were people that made a living from tourists & they didn´t really seem to like tourists which was a bit of a shame. ... read more

The taxi driver who picked me up from the train sation said that for every Toledo native there are ten tourists. It is a little city for sure; a big change from Barcelona. Ancient too. It kind of feels like you stepped into a little kid's vision of some medievil kingdom. I read somewhere that its considered to be an open air museum and it kind of feels like that; like you're actually inside of an exhibit. The synagogues, the mosques, and the cathedrals are all on top of each other. Islamic architecture seems to be the overriding force though. Because of this, the public squares are few and small. The homes have central courtyards used for entertaining and people spend less time in the streets. On my second day I met a guy who said ... read more

I woke before the wake up call which I set for 8am. I was probably awake from 5am on - due to the time difference. I knew it was too early to wake and tried to sleep. I wore white shorts and a short sleeve shirt and sandels as it looked like it would be a nice day. I left the hostal at 8:30 am and went to look for breakfast. I went everywhere but everythign was closed or so busy it would take too long to get it before I would have to meet the bus. I finally found a little place right across but it was too short now to order anything but a pastry which was not good and I only ate half. I waited for the bus and waited and waited. ... read more

Prior to working in the archive, we decided to take the first few days and see the historic locations that make the south of Spain so famous. We began our trip in Toledo. The approach to the city is a winding road up a hill, which takes you across the River Tagus and past the more modern neighborhoods outside of town. Once you reach the walls of the town, the Puerta of Bisagra bearing the arms of Charles V stands to the side, as if to show that the king's influence has not yet left this city. Aside from the cars driving--less cautiously than you would think--down the narrow streets and people holding cell phones, the town itself looks largely like you would expect from something so old. Of course nowadays, practically everything in the ... read more

It’s been a busy three days and as I’m typing this I am almost ready to sit down to Sunday lunch with the family. Carmen has a fantastic paella cooking on the stove at the moment which myself, Gregorio, Marco (Carmen’s brother) and Roy (an American student staying in the house) are looking forward to devouring. Lola the dog is also keen to enjoy the paella; however ella tiene hambre siempre (she is always hungry!) Yesterday I traveled with two friends from the school to the famous city of Toledo in Castilla-La Mancha. Once the capital of ancient Hispania the old city is rich in history. As I mentioned in the previous blog Toledo was known as the city of three cultures because it’s Jewish, Muslim and Christian traditions. The bus to Toledo costs only ... read more

Taking the 30 minute AVE train without any stops made the day trip from Madrid to Toledo doable after over three weeks of travelling with exhaustion setting in! Toledo, the spiritual and intellectual capital of Spain, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. By taxi, we drove past Puerta de Alcantara, the town's oldest bridge dating back to Roman times, as we headed from the train station to the walled town of Toledo, with Roman and Moorish architectural influences. We started our self-guided tour of Toledo at the Alcazar, which is unfortunately closed for renovations, since it is at the highest point and it could only be downhill from there! It is perched on the top of a cliff with panoramic views and its architecture dominates the view of Toledo from below. After wandering the narrow lanes ... read more

We also went to Toledo a couple weeks ago. I thought I'd squeeze this in now since I'll shortly be updating about my INCREDIBLE weekend in Lisbon, Portugal... So yea, Toledo was...pretty lame. We went for a day trip and had a tour guide that basically talked our ears off the whole time. She was young and nice but I really just hate going on organized tours. I don't care how nice you are. The city has a lot of history as the old capital of Spain, so I mean yea, it was pretty. El Greco also spent a lot of time here so I had the opportunity to see a bunch of his works. One thing I DID like about the city was its abundance of marzipan. Obviously I bought some - it was cute ... read more

So we went to Toledo, Spain which is right outside of Madrid by an hour bus ride. Toledo is most famous for it´s cathedral...therefore, I have a lot of pictures of it on here. Construction began in 1226 and lasted 250 years... can you believe that? We visited Santo Tome, a 14th century church where St. Augustine and St. Stephen were said to have visited for the burial of a local count. El Greco painted a replica of the famous burial which includes both saints, angels, and the keys to heaven. It´s a fabulous work of art, and sorry because pictures are not allowed of anything there. We had a nice lunch at a pizza place of sorts but of course it was ¨Spanish¨pizza only. I had pizza Iberica - cheese, sauce, bacon, and pepperoni. I ... read more

Madrid, Spain - Toledo, Spain - Madrid, Spain Multiple people we met in Madrid, locals and tourists alike, told us we had to do the day trip to Toledo. "It's incredible" they said. Well, we were unsuccessful in getting cheap tickets to Barcelona for a couple of days* and found ourselves with an extra day in Madrid so decided to follow their advice. This was the worst weather day so far with lots of clouds and general haziness in the sky. The train to Toledo is a quick 30 minute ride from central Madrid. At the train station in Toledo, there is no info desk, no free map of town - instead there is a small souvenir shop doing business selling maps hand over fist for 2 Euro each. The lady in the shop will point ... read more
