This one is long folks, so apologies in advance. You can leave now quietly - I promise not to notice. On the first of our two full days in Seville we walked too much. That can happen when a city is really a maze and you are a little lost. Not that we were really lost for long, but we did do too much walking. We went to see the bull ring. It is the second oldest in Spain. It was sort of beautiful. I say this because I did not expect to be charmed by a bull ring. In the former infirmary, the mounted heads of the bulls were proud and life-like. We were told the story of Joselito, who was a professional matador (the one who kills the bull) by the time he was ... read more

Heading out from Granada was rather more relaxed than finding our way in to the apartment. The narrow roads were less daunting with prior familiarity. We elected to journey to Cordoba via the sea port city of Malaga. Hmm. It seemed rather unwelcoming to motoring visitors looking for a parking spot and a place for a bite to eat. Various road changes meant that sat-nav maps were taking us around in circles also. Disenchanted we headed out without our stop and soon arrived in the city of Cordoba with its rich flamenco culture. Unbeknown to us we had arrived during the Spring Festival - Feria de Mayo - where much street entertainment and party mood were in full flight. Many groups of girls were dressed in either traditional flamenco style or else in brightly coloured attire ... read more

I am happy to be back in Córdoba. I was here twelve years ago, but only spent a couple of hours between trains and have wanted to spend more time exploring this old capital of Andalusia. So today I rode the high-speed train from Madrid - it takes less than two hours - and I arrived in time to drop my bags at the hotel and join my tour of the Mezquita. Andalusia was the name of the Muslim kingdom that ruled the Iberian peninsula for hundreds of years (started around 700AD, ended around 1500). The Mezquita originally was the main mosque of the city and is still today considered one of the world's foremost examples of Moorish architecture. It is no longer an active mosque but is instead the site of the local cathedral. Still, ... read more

We left Cordoba in the morning and headed south towards Cordoba in Andalusia. Along the way we planned to stop at Consuegra to check out the famous Milinos de Viento (windmills). We only took one wrong turn on our way out of Toledo (which resulted in a 16km long u-turn). After about an hour we turned a corner and saw the windmills perched on top of the hill next to the castle; this style of windmill was made famous in the novel Don Quixote (which is set in this part of Spain). We drove through the little town at the bottom of the hill and made our way up to the car park beside the windmills. When I stepped out of the car I was almost blown over by the incredibly strong wind! I clung to ... read more

Ronda’s rural vibes and the opportunity to walk in the countryside had been a great recharge for me. On the train from Ronda, I was looking forward to Córdoba. I had visions of flowery courtyards (called patios) in whitewashed buildings and Jewish and Moorish architectural influences. Basically, I was expecting a calmer, less-tourist-filled mix of Sevilla (flat, flamenco-filled) and Granada (multicultural blend, also whitewashed in places). The weather was perfect both days I was in Córdoba—mostly blue skies and in the 60s and 70s. I arrived a little earlier than I could check into my hostel, so I wandered through the Victory Gardens (Jardines de la Victoria) and over to the old town. I was surprised at how much of the old city walls were still intact and had been well-restored. The free Patios Cordobeses at ... read more

Your correspondent is sat in Claude shivering while looking at the torrential rain that has been hammering Calpe for the last three days. Add in the occasional thunderstorm and you will guess that things are decidedly miserable here. Despite these sufferings I shall entertain you with news of our trip to Cordoba and a few other stops as well. So, accompanied by my faithful can of beer, let’s start. Many people had told us of the beauty of Cordoba but your correspondent always associates the name with Scotland being hammered there in the 1978 world cup final by Peru and then drawing there with the mighty Iran. After a bit of research, I discovered THAT Cordoba is actually in Argentina, so the Cordoba in Spain would hold no dark memories. The campsite promised to be close ... read more

... read more

Have you ever heard of Medina al Zahar? There are many ways of spelling this but this will have to do. We had not heard of it either. On our last visit to Cordoba we marvelled at the Islamic architecture woven into the city fabric. We stood in awe at the cathedral with its mosque interior and the horse shoe arches everywhere. In Cordoba though the tourist trail stays there. You are not invited to go out of the city and see what is there. We saw no information nor any tours. Not a sausage. Not even a whisper. It was as if Medina al Zahar did not exist at all and yet it does exist in the middle of nowhere. In the mountains above Cordoba where the wind is keener and the summer heat not ... read more
