We woke up early this morning so Hannah and I could get to the Mezquita while it was free. We ate breakfast around 8:15 and then headed on our way. The Mezquita is literally like 2 minutes from our hostal, so it didn’t take very long to get there. We walked through the garden area to get into the actual church area. Inside the Mezquita was very beautiful. It had the famous red and yellow curved arcs mixed with the typical golden catholic statues. The whole building was a blend of different centuries and cultures, like Roman, Muslim, and Catholic influences. It was definitely worth looking at, especially since it was free. After we enjoyed the beauty, we decided to head over to the Alcazar. It was a Moorish castle with a beautiful garden. Entry was ... read more

I ended up missing my free breakfast this morning due to the fact that I kept sleeping. I wasn't a very happy camper about this, so I got ready and roamed around looking for food. After I found a little store that sold some packaged pastries, I walked around for a couple hours. It was nice to just walk along the streets and see Cordoba. I started to get hungry again, so I made my way back to the main area around my hostal. I found a buffet and thought it would be delicious. It wasn't very good food, but it did fulfill my hunger. Boy am I ready for a good meal! After eating, I found a really cool place that had a lot of leather goods. Cordoba is well known for the silver and ... read more

I woke up early today so i could get ready for my 9:15 train. I was finally able to take the train today, which makes me really happy. I love taking trains places because they are spacious and have bathrooms. So basically they are the complete opposite of buses. When the train approached, I took my things and got on board. I found my seat, sat down, and hoped that no one would sit next to me. To my luck, no one did. I spent the 4 hour ride to Sevilla reading The Lord of the Rings, and staring at the beautiful scenary. Around 1, the train arrived to the Sevilla station. I got my stuff and headed to the ticket office. There is no direct train or bus from Merida to Cordoba, so I had ... read more

From Valencia I carried on to Granada. I took the bus again and arrived at my destination again late in the evening. Which meant that information desks would be closed and I would only have the tiny map from my guidebook to go by. The bus station is quite a ways from the city centre, although I still considered walking. When I came out of the bus station there were two city buses out front and EVERYONE who didn't have a car waiting was jumping on the first bus. Without any real idea of where I was going I asked the driver if the bus went downtown. Yes it did, and conveniently stopped only a couple of blocks from my hostel. It probably would have stopped closer, but it was oddly crowded for the time of ... read more

The day didn't start out as planned, as I got out of hostel late, trying to run for my bus in the pouring rain but to no avail. Missed the morning bus to Cordoba and had to settle for a later timing instead. However, it perhaps was a blessing in disguise as I had a chance encounter with a Japanese lady who was also traveling herself, as she approached me for directions, presumely being the only other Asian around in the bus station. After quite a while of chatting, while waiting for the rain to stop, I was pretty intrigued by her experiences and truly inspired by where she was coming from. Yes we are both avid travelers but these are the differences that made me respect her, even more. She had only basic command of ... read more

Yesterday (Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012) was my first full day of sightseeing and strolling around Seville. The best thing about a city like Seville is that even when you get lost it's not a problem because there is so much to see and the street life is such a big part of its charm. I set out from the hotel on foot in the direction of the Cathedral. You'd think a building as impressive and imposing on the city's skyline would not be hard to find, but us North Americans are not used to how narrow the streets are and how much that both disorients you and blocks your view (one advantage, on the other hand, is that most of the narrow streets are shaded so you can get relief from the 40 degree heat quite ... read more

It was a sad day leaving Cadiz, but I had my bags all packed and ready for the long road home! I was transporting rum, sherry and wine home with me, which made for very heavy bags. It was after 6pm when I arrived at Cordoba, and VERY HOT. The muggy heat nearly bowled me over when I got off the bus. I got a taxi to the hostel and met my roomates immediately - two Americans called Mike and Chu. It was way to hot to go outside (43deg) so we all stayed in under the air-conditioning until after 9pm. And even then it was still ridiculously hot! Chu and I went out for a walk around La Juderia, the old Jewish quarter in Cordoba. The famous Mesquita is very close to where we're staying ... read more

Day 1: Madrid to Cordoba to Seville I was excited to meet our guide, Izzy, who I had previously met on the busabout loops in Lauterbrunen and I knew she was heaps of fun. At our first restaurant stop she explained how we were going to be able to order....you HAD to get your elbows on the bar, otherwise you wouldn't get served. She explained some basic Spanish and we were off on our own. I managed a crossaint and tea successfully but when I tried to order a donut, I mistakenly got an orange juice, which was incidently extremly delcious, but not what I had intended. Whoops, Spanish fail, one. Back on the bus for some more Spanish background info...Chuppa chupps in Spanish means "suckie, suckie". Salvador Dahli designed the wrapping on them (cool hey?!). ... read more
