Tried to get away from the main tourist area this morning before it got too hot. Was heading towards some old Moorish walls, heaps of churches along the way, but it was hard to take photos as they seemed very close up to houses or on narrow streets, it was hard to step back to get all of the building in the frame. Did take a photo of an old Minaret tower, which now has a church next to it. (Minaret of San Juan Square). Went back to the Plaza Corredera to see if there were any more people than yesterday. Not that many more. Had a look inside one of the buildings that formed part of the plaza, and found a food market, individual, fruit, vegetable and butcher shops one of which had rabbits hung ... read more

Night Went for a walk last night about 9pm, once again across the Roman Bridge, but much cooler than during the day, the streets and the walls of the buildings were giving off the heat they absorbed earlier ... people going for evening strolls, a joggers taking advantage of the relative cool air at night ... birds (swallows?) calling out as they fly about ... Mezquita Went to the Mezquita this morning, heaps of people, tour groups, school kids ... but as the guidebooks say, the Mosque was one of the most important in Western Islam. Eventually a Cathedral was built inside the mosque, so there is a mix of Christian and Islamic elements to the building. Within the Christian parts there are different styles of architecture, according to the tourist brochures - Renaissance, Baroque ... ... read more

Woke up this morning to rain. First real rainy day in about two months of travelling so can’t complain. Got out my 30 Sole raincoat which I bought in Cuzco, Peru. Don’t know what it is made of, but seems to work okay so long as it is not exposed to water ... just kidding it’s not that bad, kept mostly dry, and Córdoba is the birth place of the Roman philosopher Seneca who was a bit of a Stoic, so was quite stoic about the rain myself. About 9 am went for a walk around the streets, did not get too lost this time. It seemed early to me but there were still quite a few tour groups around, mostly Japanese. Went to the old Jewish Synagogue and was surprised to find (what I guess ... read more

Took the high speed train (AVE - Alta Velocidad Española) from Madrid to Córdoba this morning. Goes really fast, and only took about 1 hour and 40 minutes. (Don´t know how long it would take by car or bus, but I think the distance by road is about 360 kms). The countryside was mainly rolling hills and it seemed pretty empty, - no great mountains, or rivers to be seen (but I suppose if you are building a fast train track you would want to avoid those sorts of things.) A lot of trees, can´t say if they were olives, but probably were as Spain is the biggest producer of olive oil in the world. Getting from the train station to the hostel was not a fast journey. The hostel is in the old Jewish part ... read more

The narrow winding streets of Cordoba were days apart from fast-paced Madrid. Gypies and arabic music playing in the street..cordoba has a much older feel than Madrid. Cordoba´s mezquita is surely one of the most unique buildings in Europe. It´s a giant mozque with hundreds of mathematically placed double arches..then has a giant Baroque cathedral built inside. The cathedral itself is very beatiful..but does feel very out of place. Cordoba is great a place but i didn´t really like the hostal so I decided to leave a day earlier than originally planned. This place had a bunch of school kids running around and i really need to stay in a place with other backpackers,,,so off to Granada.... read more

We’re on our way back to the little hotel when we notice the party in the backyard. Of course we enter. There are lots of people. It’s some kind of ceremony. Children walk up on a small stage and receive awards of some kind. We have no clue what this event is all about. We don’t really care. It’s nice, and we clap along when the crowd does. Nobody seem to notice us. Rather peculiar, considering I’m by far the tallest guy there, and my friend is by far the blondest girl there. Food is served. We help ourselves. Still nobody seem to take any notice of us. Or, maybe they do, maybe this is Spanish hospitality….Needless to say, we leave unnoticed…... read more

The place reminds us not so little of the place in ”From Dusk Till Dawn”. For those of you who didn’t see that movie; it’s a rather large building with no other buildings surrounding it, outside the city. My friend met this Spanish guy who insisted that we come. Not so much out of friendliness towards strangers, more a faint hope of some action with my friend, a very pretty, very blond little girl. It turns out to be a nightclub, a very large one. It’s location, it’s size and it’s equipment would probably make it an excellent rave party spot. But although it’s Friday night there are no people there. Maybe we’re too late. Or too early. A creepy feeling comes crawling upon us. We ask the Spanish guy to take us back to back ... read more
