Nordkapp (North Cape) Norway 29 July 2014 - on top of the world This was the day/night that we had been waiting for. Will we see the midnight sun? After leaving Karasjok, the sky was cloudy and there were a few showers of rain around. We told ourselves that the sky would clear before 12MN - I am forever an optimist, but I just knew mother nature wouldn't let me down. I had waited all my adult life to see this natural phenomena. Mum and I used to talk about the midnight sun. The road north was beautiful, a little bumpy in parts and occasionally narrow, but on the whole, very good. The scenery was spectacular - stark, treeless, layered granite stacks, cliffs to the water in places, multiple coves, a sprinkling of red houses, rolling ... read more

Hammerfest, northern Norway 30 July 2014 After leaving Nordkapp, we drove south and then turned off up to Hammerfest. The polar bear is on the town's coat of arms which recalls to towns hunting and trapping days. The town settled in the 9th century but wasn't given town status until 1798. It is the world's most northerly town at 70o 39' 48" N. as recorded on the Meridian Pillar which marks the 1st international measurement of the Earth in the 19th Century The town has had a rough history. it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1856, and was razed to the ground in WW2. It was however, the 1st town in Europe to install electric street lights (1890). Today the town is expanding, with many 4-5 story accommodation buildings being constricted. The Hurtigruten cruise comes ... read more

Karasjok northern Norway 28 July 2014 Karasjok is just inside Norway, over the northern Swedish border. After a bit of shopping, we drove just outside of the town and parked for the night. The next morning we visited the Samediggi (parliament) building which is architecturally designed, with the Assembly room the shape of a Sami tent. In 2000 it moved into the building we visited, which is encased in mellow Siberian wood, with a birch, pine and oak interior. The main assembly hall is shaped like a Sami tent, and the Sami library, lit with tiny lights like stars, houses more than 35,000 volumes, plus other media - very impressive. We took a 30 minute guided tour which was well worth it. Our guide was a lad who looked Italian but he told us his father ... read more

Don’t know why, but all the places I volunteered at (see blog entry under “Lapland” also) during July expected strong European (I stress European, as nobody thought I’m Lithuanian) boy to arrive and help them with different tasks. And instead of this they got blond Lithuanian girl. However, I was sure I will prove that most of Lithuanian girls could carry tasks as good as any European man. Anyway, not to make another feministic story, I will just start telling about my experience living and working in Nordre Hestnes Gard (organic farm) in Norvegian Arctic. Firstly it wasn’t arctic at all, as the temperature kept around 25 degree almost every day –perfect for days off to enjoy arctic water, hiking and other activities provided by the farm. However, not so good working outside 7 hours a ... read more

Ahh the biggest town in the North of Norway. Not too much happening, but it has a soul and amazing nature around. Yes, nature probably is what makes this town popular among tourists and attractive place to live in. So luckily I had a really good friend here - Carles who was able to host me for couple of days (with a possibility to stay longer as a housekeeper and dinner maker). And what I believe my job was to come here and prove him, that Tromso is wonderful place to live in (well, so far, for me it is). I think it worked well vice versa. I'm still amazed by the view you get every morning you go out- the island is surrounded by mountains and the ocean. So in couple of days I managed ... read more

So this is a long overdue post of my trip to Northern Norway, in search for the northern lights. Tromso, a city in the northernmost part of Norway, is often referred to as the capital of the Arctic. Being 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, it is perhaps one of the best places to view the Northern Lights in winter. In the 70 odd photos here, the lights looked like moving curtains of lights high up in the sky. A pity I didn't get to visit the wolf camp, try my hands on ice fishing, or go on a king crab safari. But the lights were mesmerising enough to warrant a visit again... in the near future, I hope. Other info: Northern lights tour with Guide Gunnar.... read more

Hier hadden ... read more

... read more
