Ah, yes...another week has gone by out of my 6 month assignment. I'm starting to realize how fast the time is going (I'm halfway done with my 6 months already), and even though I can't wait to get back home and have REAL Mexican food and veg on my couch in front of my big screen, it'll be kinda sad to leave behind the Plein, the beers, all my new friends, etc. etc. Hmm..food for thought. Anyways, back to the adventures of the week: Monday was my day of rest, still recuperating from Rock Werchter. Truth be told, I was tired all week, but no rest for the weary here! On Tuesday, I took a bike tour of the Hague with some Shell network folks. We started off at Hague Centraal Station and rode for 2 ... read more

We caught an early train and took the 2 1/2 hour ride into Amsterdam from Brussels. Amsterdam immediately felt more welcoming than Brussels.. and there were people EVERYWHERE! We worked our way down through the city to just below the "U" of the canals to where our hotel was. Thorbecke. Climbing up narrow stairs (which were apparantly normal for the city) we checked into the hotel. We got an upgrade on our room because they overbooked and it was quite nice! All was not so well in other parts of the world, this was the day the London bombings happened. We caught some of this on the TV in the hotel lobby. We had plenty of plans for what we wanted to see while in Amsterdam. We decided we would do the Heinekin Experience first - ... read more

I was born in Amsterdam so it's always nice to go back there. My mother is Dutch and I have been told that my first words were in Dutch, before I was whisked away to New Zealand and then Australia. I am a proud Aussie but sometimes wonder what my life would be like if I had remained in the Netherlands. Spooky... This was my first time back since February 1986. I had attended school in Amsterdam for 6 months in 1980 and it was one of the happiest periods of my life. I went back after high school to catch up with old friends but life had moved on and I hardly saw anyone. It was very cold and dark and I was glad to return to Darwin. This trip was only 3 days but ... read more

Whoever is responsible for coining that phrase was a shortsighted fool. Amsterdam is infinitely nicer and more interesting than Venice is, and even though they both share canals, it's still an insult to Amsterdam. Quick useless stat for people like me that love them: 70% of the Netherlands is under sea level. There you go, and now on with my journal. During my time in Amsterdam I am staying at a christian youth hostel called "Shelter Jordan". Why? several reasons really. The key reason is that it was one of the only places with rooms available, and it was cheap. but after some thought I decided that it wouldn't be a bad idea to stay in a place with at least a few morals. Amsterdam is a party city to be sure, and it is packed ... read more

So I did a big circle around Holland visiting relatives (some of whom I met for the first time) and saw a lot of cool stuff. With apologies to those of you not related to me, I have a lot of pictures of family that might not be so interesting. But in response to some of the feedback I've received, I'll try to include more action shots and fewer buildings and other inanimate objects. So the major stops that I made on the tour de Holland were Hoogeveen, Putten, Amersfoort, Gouda, The Hague, Heemskerk, Rotterdam, and Delft. Enjoy the pictures. * * * I've added a couple more photos , including a couple that Marja sent me. I also wanted to thank everyone who let me stay at their homes, namely the Kiers family, Stina Splinter, ... read more

I have made my way to Amsterdam and am struck with a feeling of what was the big deal. The city is nice but not stunning. The heiniken brewery tour was fun if cheesy. For 10 € at least you got three pints and a glass. Otherwise beer was expensive; people are bugging you to buy their drugs as you walk down the street; and everyone is stoned. I can´t even think of anything else worth mentioning. I am happy to be on my way once again.... read more

...and I'm spent. It's been a long day. I have no idea why I'm working on this blog instead of passing out in a bathtub full of cool water. Today, Ton (the same Dutch colleague who toured a bunch of us around Rotterdam) took Dale and me up north near Amsterdam to the cities of Weesp and Muiden for a 10-mile hike across the countryside. Along the way: a fort city and a medieval castle...."ooooooh", "ahhhhhhhh." The weather was awesome...right in the 70s and tons of sun, which seemed like a good thing at the time. My wicked farmer's tan and sunburned face are not feeling particularly awesome at the moment, though. There was some great scenery along the way...old towns, forts, cannons, sprawling farmlands, and paths cut through shoulder-height fields; so all in alll, a ... read more

Hello there. I arrived after my 30 hours and Caleb and I went into Amsterdam and went on a canal ride. The heat-wave was still in force and the canal boat was somewhat like a glasshouse. We had an excellent dinner with Jan and Ingrid at a Chinese restaurant and headed to Larissa and Dennis' place the next day. We stopped in at Enkhuizen, an old fishing village for a coffee and a sampling (which was all that was required) of the dutch delicacy salted herring and also smoked eel. Sunday we chilled out in the country at Larissa and Dennis' place and Monday went for a trip to Giethoorn - the 'Dutch Venice'. Off to Scotland Tuesday and back Thursday. 30/6: Back again and I have a cold! Am staying at Mum Ingrid's place trying ... read more

Victory! Another crushing blow of defeat was dealt out to fellow Cloister patrons last night as the mental giants of team ESSP scored bewildering 57 points, easily crushing the nearest team by a margin of 17 and the weakest team by a margin of 25. Ok ok, enough for the headline news style of blogging..even I'm annoyed. So yup, another great quiz night. Do you know what day the US Declaration of Independence was signed? Nope..not the 4th of July. Apparently it's the 2nd of August. See, I'm learning. This one was particularly nice since yesterday was a crazy hot day by Netherlands standards, so we did the quiz outdoors on the sidewalk, which was interesting since cars would come whizzing past within feet of us. It also made for an interesting music round because ... read more
