The following day we headed northward towards the old town of St Goar. On the way we had a lovely pork roll dinner with veggies - my second best meal yet!! Then on arriving at St Goar we saw the worlds largest working Cuckoo Clock which is hand carved by woof from the Black Forest and is in the Guinness book of records at 3.5m in height! I wanted to buy one but they were very expensive. So tempting as they were soooo cute but my bag is heavy enough at this stage and I'm still trying to figure out how I am going to lug it all around and then finally get it home with me! So I settled on Babushkas!!! Scott you will love this one, it is kick ass!!! Everyone else bought beer ... read more

Wow the people in Amsterdam really know how to get around...literally and figuratively speaking. I've been here for 2 days now and am still in awe of how many modes of transportation there are here. When crossing the street you have to watch out for buses, trams, cars and crazy bicyclists...it's nuts. And of course there is the sex industry to boot. Went to the redlight district of Amsterdam last night and tonight (mostly to check in and see if the business is any different on the weekends as opposed to the weekdays, which it is not). The redlight is not exactly what I thought it would be. It is ctually a lot tamer than I expected, though I have been asked probably 20 times since I have been here if i wanted to buy some ... read more

My third trip to the wonderful city. This time it was courtesy of my Mom, who had booked tickets for herself and Paul, and then added me on (without asking me whether I had time off from writing my dissertation, mind you). It was a totally new experience of Amsterdam, waking up early so that we could pack the most into the day. We stayed at the Hotel Arena, which is not exactly in the city centre, so it meant walking or hopping on the tram to get to the action spots. The Rijks Museum was great as usual, I managed to get some good photos because the weather was holding out well. We also managed a day trip by coach in to Den Haag (The Hague).... read more

We stayed at a hostel called Hans Brinker in Amsterdam, a pretty dirty hostel where I wouldn't have been surprised if the beds were riddled with bed bugs. We dropped off our stuff and then headed straight down to the bar for beers. I was with Mel from Morocco, Frosty, Rohan and Lisa. I also chatted with my two roommates for a little while, a nice couple named Nadine and Campbell. We then followed Frosty to the Red Light District (got a little lost en route, but eventually tracked down the Bulldog). We had schemes of going to a Live Sex show and the sex museum, but we decided to pop into a "Coffee Shop" first, and ended up staying there for the night. I was actually quite keen to smoke a joint, when in Amsterdam... ... read more

Hello from Amsterdam! So I'm sitting in a coffee shop right now writing this which is very strange. Anyway we've been here for 2 days now but yesterday we pretty much walked around and recovered from our CRAZY night out in Prague and an overnight train. So Prague does have a nightlife I have never quite seen before. We became friends with a Kiwi by the name of Andrew and after the three of us spent a depressing but informative and powerful day at a concentration camp about 1 hour outside the city we decided a good night of dancing was in order. So Andrew, Jenn and I met up with about 7 other guys from the hostel and went to the local club which was outside of the old town, meaning very few tourists and ... read more

After a night of practically no sleep for either of us due to last minute packing and emailing (I´ll let you decide who was doing what), on August 17th Keith and I got on a plane to Amsterdam via Newark. Customs was smooth sailing and as soon as we got off of the plane, Bram (a fellow I21 guy) was there to pick us up. Bram took us to his place where we would be spending the night, then showed us to Joost´s place (another I21-er) and the local I21 Netherlands office where we met Steven S. After making arrangements to meet up with Steven and Joost later that day, Keith and I headed out to a cafe then to Bram´s for a quick nap. We met up with the guys for a local´s tour of ... read more

We have arrived in Amsterdam once again. We are busily repacking our suitcases and reorganizing to be able to fit on the plane again. Our flight has been slightly changed out of Toronto so we will be later coming in to Calgary but we should be home by Monday night/Tuesday morning. Calgary is our most welcome city to visit at this time. Talk to you all soon. ... read more
