Geo: 52.3738, 4.89095Hi all,Steve and I are back home in Amsterdam. It's very relaxing to know you don't have a ton of things you really want to see. The weather here is of course cool and cloudy with rain off and on. It makes up happy that we take the advice of our favorite travel writer and "if you can pack one coat, make it a rain coat". Dam square doesn't even look like itself this weekend. There is a huge carnival going on with all the crazy unsafe rides not allowed in the US. Christine, can't help thinking about you. Enjoying the Westveleteren. We cross the pond for home tomorrow. Not looking forward to many hours in the air, but our feet need a break. Can't wait to see everyone, especially that tiny dog. Hope ... read more

OCT 21st, 2005 Woohoo! I made it. Well at least almost half-way… Arun, I LOVE YA (hahaha wait ‘till the next part of my sentence before you have some kind of panic attack…) cause your recipe worked: 2 Gravols 1 hour before + at least 1 drink during flight = AMAZING! thanks as well to JF for your awesome email… it felt safer knowing that you were controlling & watching my plane take off!) So yeah, I have managed to overcome my fear of flying (about time!!!!); well ok I still don’t like take-off… but I manage to relax as soon as we’re up in the air. Anyway the flight to Amsterdam was very good… hardly any turbulence… the Italian guy sitting next to me wasn’t so entertaining nor was he too chatty… but I think ... read more

I really shouldn't write much about what happened in Amsterdam! Travelling in from St Goar we spent time at a clog and cheese factory, learning how to make clogs and trying them on. We also made our way to 'Bike a Dijk' and cycled around the canals, or dijks, on some interesting bikes which was great. To Amsterdam it was and some nights out taking in the local culture and shows was an interesting experience, I was even asked to be involved in one of the "shows", which again was an experience. We managed to make our way to Van Gogh's museum, with many of his works there. While also heading to the Heineken Museum (which Dave loved!) and go through the company's history and all that jazz, with a couple of samples to finish off. ... read more

Another whirlwind stopover. Spent the night in a Christian hostel with the Boys and Girls Club of Poland... theres a first. I involentarily got to attend their meeting as well. They took over the lounge in the middle of my dinner. Didn't understand much of it but they had cool pictures. They also had a sing along in Polish. I laughed at how unbelievable this trip has been. Amsterdam was beautiful. I really didn't get to see much of it at all. Saw Anne Frank's house from outside. The end of October and there was still an hour line. I went into shops and admired their blue and white china. Thank goodness it was really expensive. My back was killing me at this point with all my stuff! One tiny glass ornament was 40 Euro. We have been in Holland for almost a week and have enjoyed just hanging out with the whanau. Roel organised all the cousins our age to get together for a night out and a few beers in celebration of both our birthdays. His being a day before mine on the 7th October. We all met at Tante Hermiens before going down to the local pub for a couple and then headed into Leiden to a few pubs/bars. It not everyday you do a pub crawl on a bike but in Holland aparently it really common. Anyways it was a great night and really neat getting to know the cousins better. Geo: 52.3738, 4.89095Hi all,Well we arrived in record time.. 6.5 hours in the air! The only bad thing about arriving so early was sitting on the jet way for 20 minutes. Still better than being in the air. Oh how we have missed this city. And in true form we made a couple circles before actually finding the hotel. We enjoyed every step. The Crowne here has treated us well. After ditching the luggage we set out for our favorite places. First stop de Dampkring. In a word... fabulous! From there we headed for the one and only Gollem. Westveletern 12, need I say more? Yes, ok, St. Bernardus 12, Rochefort 10, all the Leffes, etc. For those that don't know, there are the best beers in the world. While there we met a couple of ... read more

So we arrived in Amsterdam yesterday, Friday morning. By the time that we got through customs and caught the train to the city, it was about 8am. We went to a cafe called the Grasshopper, which was a good time. And by 8:15am, we were having a really good time. So we wandered around for a couple of hours until we found a hostel and got a room for 2 nights. Friday we spent sleeping and walking around. Today, Saturday, we decided to see some sights. We visited the Rijksmuseum. It housed many art works from the Dutch Golden Era, which was the 17th century. There was lots of amazing paintings, the best being Rembrandt's Nightwatchmen. It was huge and very interesting. I haven't been to too many art museums, but this one is consedered the ... read more

flew into holland on the 5th to go visit the family...however no one had any idea I was coming! had good fun turning up on the doorstep of aunties and uncles, and the grandparents! Turned out to be a good timing while I was there as it was my cousins birthday, my aunty and uncles 25th wedding anniversary, and I discovered I had a new born cousin! hung out with the family for a week and then headed up to amsterdam for 2 nights. we ended up staying in this christain youth hostel, which was strangely situated in the middle of the red light district. Had some interesting things to look at just outside the door! Visited the Anne Frank house, did a canal cruise and strolled the red light district at night. had a good ... read more
