I was barely awake this morning when Busabout decided to test my nerve and grace. Until today, none of the coaches I've been on have ever been completely full. That changed today. I was one of four stand-by people this morning (my booking for the Paris-Brugge-Amsterdam trip being 2 days too late courtesy of my impulsive decision not to stay in Tours), and the guide informed us that there was one free seat. That turned into two free seats when there was one no show, but two was still two too few. As is Busabout tradition, the driver drew ID cards, and one guy and one girl got chosen. Fortunately (for me that is), the guy was traveling as part of a pair. Splitting up not being an option, they elected to take the train, leaving ... read more

Sal, Mick and Ann made their way to mainland Europe by boat from Hull in England, to Rotterdam in Holland, incidently the biggest port city in the world (it really is massive). Prior to leaving England, we hired a right-hand drive car, as we rationalised that it would be less confusing than driving the left-handed equivalent. Upon disembarking from the ship, it soon became apparent that driving on the right-hand side of the road was a very, very strange experience, certainly one only to be undertaken by the confident driver. We made our way passed several million windmills before arriving in Amsterdam, a wonderful city of about 500,000 people. With Ann having served the entirety of her driving suspension earned in Scotland, we threw the keys to her and hoped for the best. Ann’s apparent mantra ... read more

If you haven't guessed, we have arrived in Amsterdam and have been here for a full day. On our train ride from Brugge to Amsterdam we came to realize that our hostel was smack dab in the middle of the red light district and that the street we were located on boasts wall to wall brothels!! For any of you who don't know, Beth absolutely hates porn, strippers, prostitues etc. etc. so we found it pretty ironic that we were staying in the middle of everything that is bad in Amsterdam!! We decided to give it a try and checked into and paid for our 18-bed hostel. After climbing 3 flights of steep stairs we got to our room who had one guy passed out and another guy so cracked out on who knows what he ... read more

The answer: Bust. The trip was doomed from the start: We'd been talking about a weekend trip to Berlin for our gang, but what should've been Eugene, Jen, Ross, Louise, Shruti and Brian whittled down to just Shruti and Brian buying last-minute train tickets to Berlin on Friday afternoon. Strike one. Of course, last minute tickets cost about 3 times as much as the 58 Euro tickets you can get if you plan ahead. Uh oh. Strike two, and we haven't even boarded a train. Being the cheerful non-cynical and optimistic people we are (no snickering here, please), we were undeterred in our goal of German adventure and boarded our train to Brussels right on time at 9:05 pm. All we had to do was make it to Brussels in time for the 11:40 night train ... read more

One more day to explore this city. Unfortunately Troy wasn't up for the crowds or the smells so he went back to the room with Dad. The boys and I explored on our own. The art market and the Flower market were the highlights. The crowds of the Central station, the Damrak and the Leidesplein were more than we could enjoy. Finding the Prinzengracht and walking back to Jordaan accentuated our liking of the relative quiet and homey atmosphere of the Jordaan. Troy is slowly recovering and eating a bit more. We are ready to head out of Amsterdam and onto our houseboat to see the rest of Holland. Perhaps by the end of the week we will be ready to face the crowds of Berlin. ... read more

A night spent nursing a sick boy and cleaning up a bathroom without any rags has left me a little weary. The boys all slept until after 12 so I took the opportunity to do some laundry. The laundromat was next to the Norderkerk square on Market day. I was in my glory listening to all of the families and enjoying the sights and smells of a summer market day in Amsterdam. Wow. It is truly amazing what they can carry on their bikes while manouvering through traffic. On returning to the B&B the family was stll asleep. Waking them was not easy but if we ever hope to live on a normal timeframe we needed to. Troy was still not himself but beginning to recover. A trip to a toy store and then the park ... read more

Hello all- Well Tom and I are back in Amsterdam. I knew I'd someday return to this city, but didn't think it would be with him. So much has changed here since we last lived here. The "Funny Duck" restaurant across from our apartment has closed down, and Vlamese Frites-the fry joint we frequented is also no longer here. One great change is that the city has come alive. There is such a difference between the atmospere in the city in the summer and winter. It's much more busy and...ok wow--a guy just puked next to me in a garbage can. I'm going to make this quick because it's going to start to smell. Basically we've had the time of our lives since we left Edinburgh. The U2 concert was a great way to kick off ... read more

We made it! After too many hours folded into our airplane stalls we arrived in Amsterdam. There was a power outage at the Schiphol airport and it resembled an episode from the twilight zone as all the tired travellers stood still waiting for their baggage to start rolling again. The trains were also not running so we stood in a long queue for a taxi. We arrived at the Bed and Breakfast in the Jordaan. We forced ourselves to stay awake as long as we could. Longer for Kurtis and Troy than the rest of us. Our B&B is within a short walking distance of most sites and we wandered around to get our bearings. Supper at a recommendation from our host was Chinese (Kam Wah) and just wonderful. Although they do not have 'no smoking ... read more

Yeah, I'm hurting. Huge bruises on the inside of both knees, a sore shoulder and neck, a scratch on my arm, and possibly some mild after affects of blunt force head trauma. No, Tanya Harding didn't put a hit out on me, and no, I didn't get sacked like Chris Simms at TX/OU. I engaged in a much more brutal sport yesterday: Go-Karting. To celebrate Ben's 27th birthday, a bunch of us met up at an awesome 3-story indoor go-kart track in Delft and decided to battle it out over 2 10-minute heats for ultimate mini-car superiority. The super-competitive side of Brian (you know, the one that can't take losing at Monopoly 'cause it all really comes down to which property you get, which is entirely a game of chance') is proud to report that I ... read more
