Updated with pics!!!!! Check out the Hot Carl Tosti Hello all, Apologies for the sporadic updates but finding internet access over here is tough, especially if you don't seem to wake up before 2 pm. I guess I just have not been able to get over the whole jet lag thing. Yeah that's it. Also apologies for no pictures as of yet but I can't seem to find a terminal that will let me upload photos. As soon as I can though I will add the pics that go with these posts. So continuing from last post, after we checked into our closet (a theme we will get more accustomed to as the trip goes on) we went for some breakfast and coffee at Cafe Lechinstein. There we sat outside drinking cappuccinos like proper Eurotrash and ... read more

This is my first attempt at blogging, so be patient with me.  Our travels have been pretty uneventful so far. Our plane was a little late leaving St. Louis, but we made it to Detroit with time to spare and were packed in a completely full coach class section with a bunch of kids from KC Rockhurst on their way to Spain. They were pretty well behaved and the flight was uneventful. Kelly and I both attempted to sleep so that we could get ourselves on the right internal clock, but we really weren’t all that successful. We took a couple of ambient which had no real effect on me, but put Kelly out like a light and had her using the little bags in the airplane a time or two. We actually got into ... read more

To watch a good soccer game is undoubtedly on of my favorite past time activities. To watch my favorite team win a title gives a satisfaction that may not last for very long, but a memory that is inerasable from the mind. After many many years the time had come when my favorite team - Liverpool Football Club - had a shot at the biggest of European titles, Champion’s League. Unable to watch the game on site, the next best thing with some atmosphere was the local Irish pub. The British team/Irish pub combination appeared to be a good scene for the battle. The opposing team - AC Milan - had a few supporters in the pub defending the Italian colors, but the pub crowd would predominantly wear the beautiful all red Liverpool jerseys. As did ... read more

After a visit to a diamond centre, why not take a canal bike ride to explore Amsterdam further, perhaps visiting Anne Frank's house. Woke up at 7 for our usual hotel breakfast of cheese, ham and bread (so glad did not do a hotel tour), then Marty dropped us all off at Museumplain for canal biking. Julia and I peddled Melissa and Nat L-Z all the way to Anne Frank's house. Navigating our way through the canal's was interesting, even with the instructions and map we were given. Being in Anne Frank's house was a surreal experience, it felt like you were on a film set or something. I still can't believe 8 people hid in there for almost 2 years. Julia and I went shopping after that, then caught a tram down to the ... read more

We cross the Dutch boarder for Amsterdam. Visit a cheese farm and see how clogs are made on our afternoon sightseeing tour. Cycle through the countryside and explore the fishing village of Edam. Contiki's centrally located hotel is our home for the last 2 nights. Had a good night's sleep, but still woke up tired at 6.30. Had a quick breakfast of the usual hotel food - bread, cheese and ham. Our lunch stop was really early, at 10.45 for some reason. Drove to Edam, where Claudia took us for a ride on granny bikes. We saw a dijk and had a group photo taken in front of a windmill. The Netherlands is 'reclaimed from the sea', and used to be all underwater, the windmills are used to get rid of the water and without ... read more

We all got into Amsterdam just fine, and although it took us a while to get to our hostel (the trams here are really hard to figure out, we still don't know how to use them right after using them several times today). I would have to say that this city is one of the most messed up cities I have ever been in, just because they are so lax on so many things that are illegal elsewhere. There really are tons of marijuana bars and prostitutes looking for work by standing in windows in the red light district, and I think it just made most of us very uneasy and nervous about the legitimacy of the entire thing. That was during a couple hours of just wandering around the city without any really purpose or ... read more

One of the most prominent tourist attractions in the Netherlands is the Keukenhof (pronounced 'co-ken-off'), which is a sprawling garden park replete with an assorment of tulips and other flowers, artful landscaping, ponds and fountains, not to mention other family attractions such as parks, petting zoos, and even a hedge maze. Kat and I devoted the better part of our day to the 40 minute ride from Leiden and back and to touring the gardens and soaking up all the natural beauty. Unfortunately, mid May is late in the tulip season, so we were unable to see the tulip fields surrounding the Keukenhof in full bloom, which can be more or less described as a multi-colored sea of flowers for as far as the eye can see. Must be nice. Afterwards, we headed back to Leiden ... read more

After a tip from my friend Nick, Kat and I took a tram out to Delft to watch the Delft University Flugtag event. I was vaguely familiar with the concept because I believe Red Bull sponsors something similar in the states for marketing purposes. Basically, the Flugtag is about the school's aeronautical engineers trying to design a non-powered, manned aircraft (a glider, let's say) to be launched down a huge ramp over the town canal. The goal of course is to 'fly' as far as possible over the water. The fun here is that no matter how well your glider flies, you end up in the drink. It was AWESOME! These guys spend so much time designing and building these things just to fly maybe 6-7 feet off the ramp; and most of that is just ... read more

Yay! After 5 some-odd weeks apart, Kat's made it across the pond for a week-long stay. After picking her up at Schipol Airport, we went up to Amsterdam to visit the Anne Frank house, Heineken Experience brewery tour, and of course walk around the 'scenic' red light district. Kat was less than impressed with the quality of the ladies who were out and about during the mid-afternoon hours, but hey, I guess if you're particularly lonely, the friendly lady with poor dental hygeine and fat rolls on her forearms might be the kind of company you're looking for. The Anne Frank house was markedly crowded, but well worth it. The museum does a good job of relating the differnt parts of the house and relevant artifacts to the war history and personal story of the house's ... read more
