Day 38 : Sunday 13 October 2019 : Venice, Italy Opti Shuttle 9.15am to Venice was the quickest, easiest and best value. Picked up on the corner near our accommodation. Long trip on a mini bus, but very comfortable, good speed with a pit stop at a Roadhouse. You get dropped on the outskirts of Venice and have to walk in because there are no cars in Venice arrive12.15pm. No point wheeling your luggage here, on the back it goes. Up and down stairs, through alleys. We got to the Piazza but couldn’t find the Airbnb after that, fortunately, the guy was waiting for us and we looked lost enough he figured it was us. Awesome little unit, modern and has everything, we love this one, has lots of extras. And there’s a little storeroom/shed underneath ... read more

Welcome to Blog number 4 for all my friends and family that have not been following my more frequent Facebook posts. My apologies for not blogging earlier but the last couple of weeks have been hectic. We left the Cinque Terre and made it to Lake Como after being sent on yet another couple of Google Maps adventures. We keep arguing whether it’s the maps in the wrong or the navigator. Personally I think having a driver who has tunnel vision and no spatial awareness could possibly be most of the problem. Noel will beg to differ. First stop was at the Monza race track. I had arranged to go on a tour of the track the next day but we decided to call in on the way through to Onno so that we wouldn’t have ... read more

"How lucky we are that surrounded by all this joy we sing inside our own little boat" Kabir Given that we are on a lake and a beautiful one at that this seems somewhat appropriate. There are little boats on the lake . There are large ones too. If you are going to end up somewhere then Lake Garda is not a bad place to end up. All life goes on here . At the bottom of the lake the first place we visited in Suzy in 2012 - Peschiera with its marina and its larger than life campsites Bella Italia and Butterfly where Italians love to socialise and live cheek by jowl. A good train service to take you out for a bit of culture . Bardolino - excellent town with smaller more intimate campsites. ... read more

Day 26 : Tuesday 1 October 2019 : Bike ride to Lazise, Bardino and Garda on Lake Garda We are trading sore feet for sore bums. We hired bikes from the caravan park. Its a coastal path that goes from town to town, and quite busy on this glorious sun shiny day. It's a huge lake, but a beautiful ride up the east side. Lazise is our first town with a wonderful old town centre with cobblestone paving, narrow alleys and picturesque squares and a harbour set right in the centre. It seems to be a walled town or castle originally. We parked on the outskirts and wondered in. Great shopping, best we've seen. Use girls couldn't resist and made some purchases, whilst Graham amused himself with more calamari. That's it, going back for more seafood, ... read more

Day 25 : Monday 30 September 2019 : Lake Como to Lake Garda Off we head to Peschiera del Garda, Lake Garda (prebooked AUD$131). So sad to leave this beautiful place and this fabulous relaxing slice of heaven we called home. On arrival we sorted the train tickets from here to San Candido because I couldn’t book online. Turns out price just doubled ☹it now €150! But its ok, because I booked from San Candido to Lake Bled, a long trip and it was only €32. Just to mix it up, this time our accommodation is a caravan park, on the lake for something different. A nice deluxe 3 bedroom park home!. Butterfly Camping Village. Okay, was smaller than we expected as you can see in the photo Graham can reach both walls and the light ... read more

A little background: the first time we went to Italy, I was so excited to try real Italian food, and we were horribly disappointed. By the end of the trip ( pre Airb&b and yelp) we had resorted to buying pizza slices from the Russian shop down the street in Rome and eating them in our hotel room..On our next trip, we were a bit more savvy about avoiding the restaurants in the tour guides, but still did not have many great meals. Now, on our fourth trip, we are really off the tourist trail, and tonight I had the best fish I've ever eaten in a restaurant..If you ever get to to the village of Pieve D'Alpago, please go to Ristorante Stefano...Stefano personally served our fish, delicately removing tails, bones, and skin. It seems like no matter what we do, we get home at 5:30 every day. Today I thought that I could skip taking a nap when we got home...but fell into a deep sleep, and I'm now fixing dinner of pasta, butter, and cheese at 7:45....I'll be so glad when jet lag is over.... Since the rain was not supposed to start until nearly noon today, we went for a long walk around the local villages: Villa, Torch, Garna and Shiucaz. We walked past fields of wildflowers, past churches, homes, and farms, and down to a river, where the road was closed due a landslide. There was a wedding in Garna, and the church bells rung loudly across the mountainside. On the way back, two paragliders landed at the local club right next to us! We ... read more

We knew the rains were coming, but we were still hopeful this morning, when it was only raining lightly. We decided to drive south to Treviso, where it was predicted to be cloudy, but with no rain. Ha, ha... We took the toll road down (an hour trip), and had some difficulty finding parking. All the lots outside the walled city were full, and the rain had started. We only got in jam once, trying to turn around, finding ourselves blocked by a one way street and no where to go, with a car trying to get by us. We extricated ourselves, and found a parking lot near the center of town, and two spots opened up as we waited! And then the sky opened up: thunder, lightening close by, and a downpour.... We sat in ... read more

We slept well last night..it is silent here after dark, and very quiet during the day. Everyone seems to have at least one dog, but they don't bark at night. We woke around 6:30 am, and were on the road by 9:30. We had decided to visit the national park near Belluno today, but didn't have concrete plans after that. We found the trail area in the Cordevole Valley after a few tries...life is more complicated without google, although we did download maps while we were on wifi at the apartment...We don't have data here, so we are navigating with a GPS, paper maps and road signs, and sometimes the help of strangers. We took a short hike along the river, and returned on the narrow country road, through a few small villages. In one, there ... read more

I guess our new normal is forgetting and losing stuff! We had to turn around 15 minutes from home on Monday, because I had forgotten my coat! When we got to the gate in Seattle, my metal water bottle was missing, and I got my morning run by jogging back to security to look for it...no bottle. I tried to buy one in Chicago, but $22 for a Chicago Cubs bottle was too much...While waiting for our Venice flight, we realized we had left the guide book on the desk at home. Thanks to Amazon, we had it downloaded before we boarded! And then last night I left my cell phone in the bar where we had "dinner" (more later..), and we had to drive back in the dark to retrieve it....I'd like to hope we're ... read more
