Beauty everywhere!
Everyone has flowers.... I guess our new normal is forgetting and losing stuff! We had to turn around 15 minutes from home on Monday, because I had forgotten my coat! When we got to the gate in Seattle, my metal water bottle was missing, and I got my morning run by jogging back to security to look for it...no bottle. I tried to buy one in Chicago, but $22 for a Chicago Cubs bottle was too much...While waiting for our Venice flight, we realized we had left the guide book on the desk at home. Thanks to Amazon, we had it downloaded before we boarded! And then last night I left my cell phone in the bar where we had "dinner" (more later..), and we had to drive back in the dark to retrieve it....I'd like to hope we're done with this, but I doubt it!
We had two uneventful flights (but little sleep) and arrived at the Venice Airport at mid day after 14 hours of travel. Immigration was fully automated except for passport stamping. Things slowed down when we went to retrieve our rental car. Several flights had arrived at the same time and the lines were long. It probably took
Our eating area
While tiny, the apartment is well thought out, with a large bathroom! close to two hours before we were settled into our Lancia and on the road towards the Dolomites. It was a nice to leave the crowds headed for Venice behind and take the autostrade north. It was an hour drive to our rental in the small village of Villa, outside of Pieve d"Alpago. The last part of the drive was on a one lane road!
Our rental is a tiny apartment behind the main house, overlooking gardens, fields, and the Dolomites. Our host, Katja, is wonderful and gifted us bread, eggs, and produce from her garden. I've asked her to speak Italian to me, and while I couldn't say much yesterday that didn't immediately turn into Spanish or French, I was pleased that I could understand her! It is quieter here than home, with not a sound at night!
We checked in, and took a much needed nap. I got up after an hour and went for a long walk around the area, since the weather was beautiful and rain is predicted for later in the week. I ended walking for over two miles, and the views and scenery were beautiful...
After I got back, we decided
A gift from our host, Katya
She has large garden just behind the apartment. to go to the next village for dinner, and took the car since the road there was busy, even though it was only a 20 minute walk. We were glad we did, since the restaurant was closed along with the others in town. This must be a quiet season for tourists here, in between summer and the winter sports season. We finally went to a bar, and had the last three pieces of day old pizza, and a beer. The owner was a kind woman, who apologized for the lack of food and quality of the beer...!
This morning, Bill made breakfast from Katja's eggs and fried up some tomatoes from her garden, served along with some homemade granola I'd brought from home...We will drive further up into the mountains today and do some short hikes. The Dolomites are white because they are actually ancient coral reefs. The peaks look like they are snow-covered at dusk.
