http://www.heygo.com it is believed that the tradition to celebrate the Venice Carnival may have started in 1162 with the celebration of the victory over Ulrich II of Treven, the Patriarch of Aquileia (an ancient Roman city in Italy). Urich II was taken prisoner together with his 12 vassals and eventually released on one specific condition. Every year on Holy Thursday the Patriarch was obliged to pay a tribute to Venice that included a bull and 12 pigs which than were slaughtered in the Piazza San Marco in front of Venetians to commemorate the victory. On that day the street celebrations, games, people dancing and bonfires would take over the streets of the city.&... read more

The Beijing Olympics Games are over....Great, I was not a big fan of the concept this year! I'm not sure I'm going to be a big fan either of the World Cup in Qatar end of this year! So let's celebrate the 2026 Winter Olympics coming to Cortina next! Let's hope we'll get back to the proper Olympic tradition. Somewhere, somehow...old fashioned may be more enjoyable than what we have just been served! So let me introduce you to the beautiful...and in 2022 very peaceful Cortina! I can't imagine that in 4 years time, chaos of the Olympics will change the face of this place forever! We took the early bus out of Venice to Cortina. At one stage they may have been 8 passengers in this big empty bus, this is it! We made it ... read more

This is not the first attempt to do this Italian trip. Last one was exactly when Covid hit Italy in March 2019. We landed in Nice and were supposed to go next day to the left...to Italy. Well, they closed the border, we made it all around the South-East of France than headed back home to Seychelles at the time before they would close all airports around just few days after the trip. We are actually holding one two different tickets that were issued back in 2018, one in Milan and one in Florence! So when we landed in Venice, just around lunch on this beautiful day of January, Tanya and I just looked at each other in relieved, we finally made it! I love Italy in January. It may be cold, but it's generally dry ... read more

Maggie has definitely made the most of her time in Italy with whirlwind trips to both Venice and the Amalfi Coast since seeing Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. Yesterday, Maggie and four other girls (Salma, Bella, Meadow and Kelsey - all fellow SAS passengers) flew for a one-day sightseeing trip to Venice. She adored Venice, and found it one of the most beautiful cities she's seen so far. They rode in a Gondola, visited St. Mark's square, and just strolled through the Venetian streets before flying back to Naples that night. Today, Maggie decided to take a solo trip to the Amalfi coast. She navigated the Naples metro, Italian train, and Salerno buses to spend just over an hour admiring the Amalfi coast before reversing the trip in time to drop in on a castle she spotted ... read more

2ème ... read more

We had a full day of staying in Verona because we had the opera in the evening. The opera, Aida, was playing at the Verona Arena. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verona_Arena I don’t remember how I heard about the opera festival in Verona but I did read about it several years ago. We wanted to go 2 years ago but I don’t remember what happened, then last year it was canceled. As soon as tickets were available for this year, I bought them. And so it was that we went to the Verona Arena to hear Aida! We found the arena turned into a setting for an opera. The opera started at 9 pm just before sunset and would run until close to midnight. Our seats were in the center, front row on the 3rd level and had a clear ... read more

Our original plan was to stay in southern Italy for a couple of weeks then northern Italy for a couple of weeks. I’d wanted to say a month in each place but we compromised on 2 weeks for each. Since we were planning our whole trip around the opera in Verona, we thought we’d stay in Verona and make day trips from there. So, Verona would be our last place to stay in Italy. The trip to Verona was a quick train ride and after getting a taxi we were in our new apartment in no time. That afternoon and the following day we hunted and gathered food and familiarized ourselves with our new surroundings. Explored the plazas that I’d hoped we would enjoy and Zaya tested the gelato. Venice was the 1st day trip from ... read more
