We commenced our day by taking a walking tour of Venice. Our trusty guide was a young Venetian named Giacomo, who was studying Post Grad in Architecture at the University in Venice. He was very knowledgeable about the city, and cracked many jokes during our tour, making it an informative yet interesting morning. Giacomo wound us through narrow alleys and across bridges and squares that we would never have encountered, taking us into churches where master artists had painted significant yet little known works. He also gave us the inside tips on where to eat like a local, and how to navigate the six districts of Venice. Venice is a very different city. You hear a siren and you look around for the Police Car, Ambulance or Fire Engine, and next minute a vessel with lights ... read more

An early start this morning leaving Bardolino, as we sadly had to deliver Giulietta, our Alfa Romeo that has served us so well, to Marco Polo Airport Venice by 10.00am. Alfa’s are great cars, but they do not handle the canals of Venice so well. After handing in Giulietta, we made our way to the Vaporetto (Ferry) to take us across the lagoon into Venice, to the nearest terminal to our accommodation. In driving through Eastern Europe we have been relying heavily on our trusty Garmin GPS. Now it was time to test the Garmin on the canals of Venice, which can be confusing to navigate at the best of times. I changed the Garmin to “walking mode”, and it led us straight to our Hotel, which is very well located, less than 50 metres from ... read more

Ravenna: The Beauty of Mosaics Ravenna is town in Italy that doesn’t get much notice when you toss it in with the better-known city destinations like Venice, Florence or Rome. It is a small town nestled down the coast from Venice that is best known for its majestic mosaics in the churches and mausoleums. These absolutely lovely mosaics are UNESCO World Heritage sites and this town contains eight of them. We find that unbelievable… 8 in one town. You’ve got to add this town to your travel list. Here’s a quick list of the sites so you can do your own search. The Basilica of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placida, the Arian Baptistery and the Baptisteryof Neon, the Basilicaof Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, the Oratory of Sant’ Andrea or Archiepiscopal Chapel ... read more

I slept in until 10:00 am. I had groceries so I didn't need to go out to eat. It felt good to eat cereal while watching Italian TV. For the next four hours I planned to rest of my trip, save for my last night's accommodation in London. I'd be taking the train to Venice and spending two nights at a hostel there. Then I'd be flying to Valencia for three nights in a hostel, with a five hour layover in Barcelona. Lastly, a flight to London for one night. Watching the $/€/£ signs fly by made me start to feel the pinch. I was on budget until the car rental in Germany and the Airbnb and motorcycle rental here. Alessio was not kidding about the mosquitoes in Florence, even during the day. I was going ... read more

After farewells over breakfast yesterday we caught the Vaporetto from the terminal just next to the boat over to the terminal near our hotel, what a great and easy way to travel. As you can tell by now I caught up on the blogs (apologies again to those who didn't just hit delete) then we went exploring and were brave enough to take some of the laneways and not stick to the main streets. Thought of the day - Don't say “I can't see why everyone says it is easy to get lost in Venice” because, while you may not get lost, you may take four times as long to get somewhere and pass the same landmarks more than once. It was great to be able to wander at dinner time and we found a great ... read more

There were a number of options this morning on our last full day on River Countess and we chose to go via boat across to the markets at the Rialto Bridge with Bogden (Andrea's husband) the chef of the River Countess. The markets reminded us of the food section of the Victoria Markets but we realise there was a strong Italian influence in Melbourne so we shouldn't be surprised. The most intriguing for us were the bunches of chillies and the HUGE variety of fish and seafood. We tasted rucula (rocket) and huge grapes that tasted amazing and cherry tomatoes that tasted like the ones we picked last summer so we knew everything was very fresh. We then went up to the top of a new department store in the Rialto area to get amazing views ... read more

Baby birds!!! By now you are full-grown adults but I still feel the need to feed you every now and then. I hope you don't mind, nay, rather enjoy this little feeding. The wife, Lauren Fisser, fka Lauren Shoemake aka Shoe, agreed to travel with me for 16 days across Italy. The trip started normally with us racing each other to see who could finish two beers the fastest at the airport. Of course, I won but Lauren was glowing and in high spirits. I hate to have a flashback already but I need to for what I perceive as a great story. As Lauren and I were waiting in line to print our boarding pass for our connecting London to Rome flight, past security mind you, at a majestic place called "American Airlines Customer Service ... read more

Be warned - we have wi fi!! The actual date is Sunday 21 August. I have tried to be very concise but this is not my forte so either sit down with a coffee/tea or something stronger and be prepared to catch up or hit delete for the next few entries. I will try to include more photos (the majority appear below the blog) and less words but no promises!!! The dates reflect the day we were in each place. Venezia - walking tour along waterfront to San Marco piazza, Bridge of Sighs, Doges Palace and walk back through laneways. Ceilings decorated with real gold and paintings on canvas by Titian and Tintoretto. Highlight - Excusive access to Church of San Marco in the evening where the church was illuminated to see all the gold - ... read more

So, technological foibles have struck again. After finishing over half of my Venice entry which normally saves to drafts, somehow I have deleted it. Since I am typing this painstakingly on my cellphone, this has sent me into despair. Alas, I shall try and recreate the former glory of ten minutes ago. So back to Venice. Venice was a both beautiful and baffling place. Navigating it, is like trying to send a drunken mouse through a maze. But more on that later. The first hurdle was dealing with our less then ideal accommodation, at a camping ground. It all started with the tent. The surface area of the tent ensured that the maximum amount of comfort would equate to zero. The two slat camping beds took up the vast majority of the minimal space. Poor Bex ... read more

Glorious sunny day. After a great nights sleep we had a buffet breakfast to rival all others. Absolutely amazing. We all got the water taxi across to a famous glass factory where we watched a demonstration of glass blowing and craftsmanship. Spent time looking at shop as well. Then got taxi into the heart of Venice. Got quite hot in the sun. Went on a Gondola ride for half an hour which was fantastic. After we separated from the group and did our own thing for the rest of the day. Did some shopping, had lunch, and went up saint Marco's tower for great views over the city. The one downside was incredible numbers of tourists even though it's not yet August. Came home on water taxi and went up onto the top floor for a ... read more
