Hello to all! It is Tuesday morning 9 a.m. The hotel we are staying at overlooks a canal. That is if you hang out of the window and look three stories down. It is beautiful. We arrived into Venice yesterday afternoon, changed, grabbed the swim suits and were off. We had taken water bus taxi to the island of Lido. When you get off the water taxi the walk is ten minutes straight to the other side of the island where the beach and ocean are. All the girls went swimming. T.K., Debe said to tell you the swimming was wonderful! We came back from the island and did a Pub Crawl out of Rick Steve's. (Thanks Mom and Dad - both books Let's Go Italy and Rick Steve's have been wonderful - with the maps ... read more

Go Trippin' We arrived extremely early, checked our luggage into a locker at the train station and dragged ourselves out to the city of canals. We had called as soon as we arrived and was told we could not check into until later so decided to wander the city which appeared to still be asleep. Tired and drained, we really just wanted to check in and rest. Oh well, press on. We found a small cafe and decided to have some ... read more

We decided to stay in our budget today by walking Venice and getting lost in the many narrow passages that make up the city. Our first order of business was the Rialto bridge (yes, more shopping), number two was St. Maria del Ferari Church which according to the guide book comes second to St. Peter´s Basillica, number three was a funky sounding bridge that crosses the Grand Canal and number four was the largest greenspace in Venice which I think comes second to our backyard. So we navigated ourselves to the church and somehow overlooked the fact that it was a Sunday and all cathedrals and such were open for mass only. Next was this bridge, across the way from where we were, and lo, no bridge. I failed to read the sentence in the guidebook ... read more

Hmm, so about last night... I might have a little too much fun. I woke up this morning around 4:00 am feeling like crap. I forgot to mention that last night, we decorated the room with crepe paper for Charlotte birthday. I really had to use the restroom, but I couldn't get out of bed, because the crepe paper would have been torn. By 4:30, I just went for it. We woke up around 6:00 am, and hopefully Char liked the decorations. It was kinda hard to tell. We started getting ready for breakfast at 7:00. Breakfast lasted a little longer than usual, because Brek probably had a later night than the rest of the lot. Anyways, today we ar going to drive over to Italy! Our first stop of the day was at the rest ... read more

Today was our first full day in Venice and boy was it obvious, the waft of refuse and seawater amongst other things alongside the canals. A waterboat took us from the front gate of your campsite straight to the edge of Venice. Our plan for the day - the glass island of Murano. We took yet another water bus to get there. An old man with a cane greeted us, well he basically shuttled us to the glass factory. The ´glass master´demonstrated the two methods of creating glass and everybody oohed and ahed and was shuttled back out. Then we spent the rest of the afternoon meandering the streets and shopping. Yay big spending day on jewellry. So our budget was blown and we became creative with food stuffs...aka grazing. Instead of proper meals, we grazed. ... read more

Hello to one and all, I am SO HUNGRY! Thank god we have food in our backpacks as soon as we get out of here. We have just booked at this place's sister campsite in Rome, we like the prospect of having a room alone with a pool not far away for the same price as a place right in Rome with 12 other people and no pool! We spent yesterday by the pool, so nice. I am so tanned, or getting there... and Dan is so burned! But we had a great time dipping in and out of the pool and reading and chatting with people around. Sun is hot, water is cool, beautiful combination! Today we went island hopping to Murano and Burano in the lagoon off of Venice. We took the public transport, ... read more

Venice is beautiful but full of tourists. Yesterday we spent close to 5 hours at the Laundromat. Everyone inside was American and had heard it was the only Laundromat in Venice. Alistair wants to open a Laundromat here. They make a killing off tourists. The dryer was horrible and took many cycles to dry... this was after waiting in line with your wet laundry. If our clothing didn't smell to high heaven we would have left. After spending most of the afternoon there we decided to ask our hotel clerk for the best Pizza in Venice and he sent us to the far edge of the island. We felt pretty confident with the large map of Venice we had with us. The city is like a giant Labyrinth. We kept walking into dead ends and kept ... read more

I can't write much now as we are about to run out for dinner but we have been travelling pretty much non-stop for 2 days. We left Dubronik for Orebic the day before yesterday (sat I guess??) It was pouring rain the entire day. I only had enough time in Orebic to eat spaghetti and take a few pictures... oh and play some video poker in a bar (I know but it was freezing outside) before we got on the boat to Korcula. We got to Korcula late in the evening. Ryan ran around asking for ferry info and Alistair looked for accomodations while I sat down and kept an on the packs (tough job). We lucked out with a great room by the bus station which was especially important as we had to take the ... read more

Buongiorno. A HUGE part of my time in Italy has been the ENDLESS kindness demonstrated by my two hosts. I will try to give this kindness justice and explain what's been going on in this area. No pictures this time but eventually they will be AWESOME. Quick travel update: I'm sitting in my friend Laura's family house in Trevignano, Italy which is a short distance from Venice. The days prior, I was with Massimo in Trieste and various parts of the area, including Slovenia. Today, I was in Venice proper and tomorrow I'm heading with Laura to Bologna for a handful of days. I'll return to Venice the morning of the 8th and fly out that evening to Frankfurt. The World Cup starts the 9th. Control yourself. Travel stories past: Last I wrote on June 1, ... read more

Hello to one and all, We are officially in Italy! Actually we got into the country on the 1st, first we were in the Cinque Terre national park. Beautiful. It is comprised of 5 little towns connected by a hiking trail, it is absolutely amazing. Picture little towns of multicoloured houses all attached with dark green shutters slapped onto a cliffside with beautiful dark blue ocean... mmmm... and blue blue sky. Wow it was amazing! We did the full 9km hike through all of the villages on our first full day there. We were hurting but very proud of ourselves afterward! The second and final day there we caught a ferry that runs through to all the towns, went to the last town Manorolo (sp), rented some beach chairs and sunbathed. So relaxing, and in the ... read more
