So after a day of unsuccessful searching for interesting medieval walled towns we decided to cut our losses and head for yes you guessed it - another one. This time Asolo described in the guide books as bella. A town that had been frequented in the 19th century by young men on their grand tours. In the 20th century by writers and interlectuals. who settled there. We had searched out a free sosta on Forestier which was within walking distance of the town albeit up hill all the way. When we arrived via yet another circuitous Silly Sat Nag route the car park was virtually empty with the exception of a Swiss motorhome whose owner looked to be up town. The lower car park was taken up by the sosta which was guarded by a hedge ... read more

Geo: 45.7933, 11.9128After lunch Zio Franco took Michael and I for a drive to a nearby touristy town. The town was very quiet this afternoon. From the car park in the historical centre we could see the Fortress of Asolo at the top of the hill. To us it looked like it was very run down and possibly now just ruins. It was built in the late 12th century. Below the fortress, we had a great view of a magnificent building, it was the former convent. As we walked around we noticed that the main streets were decorated with many Italian flags. I assume that there must be a festival on soon. On the outside of the Palace of Reason we stopped to admire the very ancient frescoes from the 16th century which depicted a battle scene. ... read more

Geo: 45.7933, 11.9128Asolare (v) - the leisurely and agreeable passing of time, unburdened by any pressure of purpose. So, today was our farewell to Asolo. We've loved our time in this little village. The accommodation was perfect (OK, it could have been one bed larger – the internet had said there was a small bed for a child up to 5yo, but it turned out to be a cot! So, the nights that Nonno and Nonna spent here, one of the kids was sleeping on the floor on a nest of blankets, and we were on the sofa bed) and the kids loved having the room to run on the farm. The old couple downstairs said they thought we have beautiful kids, and that they loved listening to the kids play. (The old man said to Steven, ... read more

Geo: 45.7933, 11.9128That is what we did today! After an extremely busy few days, we had a very lazy Monday – we stayed at home, the kids did some schoolwork and some archaeological digging. We thought about getting the kids' haircuts, but found the barber doesn't open on Mondays. We went to the grocery store that we had been to at midday last Monday, to find this Monday, it's decided to close! We found another supermarket, and decided we all wanted something other than pizza or pasta for dinner, so tried to buy Mexican – a limited range, to our surprise (that there were any options!). Then home for a sleep instead. No photos, no news – just a nice lazy day together! Rita and Elio were out at friends' most of the day, and home for dinner ... read more

Geo: 45.7923, 11.9117After a busy day, we try to have a quieter day for the kids the next day, so we stayed home on Saturday, and did some school work. The kids really love the farm – one afternoon, they played being archaeologists, and went down into the vineyard to look for "things" – they uncovered a few broken pieces of pots (though Georgia suspects the pots were broken last summer and not in Roman days) and some interesting rocks! Contented times then spent washing and cataloging their discoveries. That night, we took advantage of being home and booked for dinner at our own agriturismo. Every Friday and Saturday night, we had watched carloads of people turn up – about 80 people – for the home-cooked food. We decided we had to join the crowds! (And, ... read more

Geo: 45.7933, 11.9128We've had a really quiet day, after a few days of late nights and visiting relatives. Yesterday, when we left the Pordenone Perissinotto's, the soccer game was continuing, and Tom asked if he could stay with Rita and Elio, who were spending the night at Pordenone. It felt so strange, leaving him behind, but he had a wonderful time being spoilt by Zia Isetta and enjoying the differences (breakfast was a large bowl of milk, and some melba toasts!) And Nonno and Nonna came back from Isetta's with another few kilos of cherries – we are eating so many cherries that it will be amazing if we don't turn red, not to mention the other effects! The kids did some school work, had a sleep, and in the afternoon, we walked up to Asolo for ... read more

Geo: 45.7933, 11.9128On Monday, we started our day slowly – it had been nearly 10pm when we got home last night. We decided to take the kids to see the temple of Canova at Possagno – but forgot until we arrived there that lots of things in Italy are closed on Mondays! Bugger! But we got to see the Temple with the most perfect blue sky! We drove back to Asolo, taking a road that we'd not been up before, and looked at a couple of villas on the road, before arriving at the St Anna church and cemetery. The famous Asolo resident, Eleanora Duse, is buried there, and we had an interesting time walking around the cemetery (not as gruesome as it sounds!) Then to the grocery shop – I was thrilled to buy a ... read more

Geo: 45.7933, 11.9128Not surprisingly, we were all exhausted on Friday. We had a quiet day, and did some grocery shopping with Nonna, whilst Nonno looked after the boys at home. Steven got chatting with the man in the pet store about the price of Frontline in Italy – he was very kind, and after we took photos of the cabinets that Merial (the drug company) provides him, he gave Georgia a Frontline Tshirt. Then, whilst I did some homework with the kids and prepared lunch, Steven dropped his parents to lunch with some old workmates of Elio, who live nearby on a farm. We had a sleep, which we ALL needed, and then all went to collect Rita and Elio from the arm. The people were lovely – Rita and especially Elio had a fantastic time there, ... read more

Geo: 45.7933, 11.9128When we had arrived in S. Catarina on Monday morning, we were told the sad news that Rita's cousin's daughter's husband (are you following this?) had passed away suddenly, so on Wednesday, Rita, Elio and Steven went to the funeral. It wasn't until 3.30pm, so we had some time in the morning, and decided to go to a nearby Villa at Maser. The Maser Villa was designed by Palladio, one of the most famous architects in the world who came from this area (and therefore, THE most important architect in the world in this part of Italy!). He was ahead of his time, demanding that his buildings combine beauty, convenience and blend with the surrounds. It was absolutely lovely – the long yellow building stretching into the surrounding corn and barley fields and grapevines, the ... read more

Geo: 45.7933, 11.9128We woke at Asolo to a crystal clear, blue day! As soon as we could, we were out the door to explore this town. We are about 5 minutes walk from the old town walls and gate, where there is a 16th century drinking fountain - the kids stop for a drink every time we walk past! Then, colonnaded streets with lovely (expensive) shops and restaurants, lead to a very nice piazza with lots of coffee shops and chairs in the sun.We weren't planning to go to Mass, but when we found ourselves at the door of the church as Mass was beginning, decided we were meant to be there. We'll have to go back, though, to see the famous paintings in the church. Then we went to the city museum, which was a ... read more
