Geo: 45.7933, 11.9128We'd been told that we couldn't arrive at our apartment in Asolo until after 6pm, as the Giro d'Italia (equivalent of Tour de France) goes past the front door, and all the roads were closed. So we meandered our way from Sotto Il Monte to Asolo, stopping at Sirmione on the Lago Garda and at Bassano de Grappa.Sirmione was just lovely – though very much a tourist town. The Lago di Garda is the largest Italian lake (Lago Maggiore and the others don't count, as they are partially in Switzerland), and Sirmione is an ancient town at the end of a tiny narrow peninsular, jutting up from the bottom end of the lake. The peninsular is so narrow that you can see water on both sides of the road as you drive up, and ... read more

I was overdue for a haircut… by at least a month or two. And with my dad arriving tomorrow, I figured it was time to do something with il miei capelli (“my hair”). One of the women who works in the office suggested a place in Asolo that has a stylist who speaks English. I figured it was a smart move, especially considering that I know relatively little Italian. I also figured that I could do a better job setting an appointment in person than I could over the phone. So after my morning class was over, I drove into Asolo to request my appointment. When I got there, I was told that the woman who speaks English does not work at the shop. Maybe I got the wrong shop. Maybe I wasn’t asking for her ... read more

Today just seemed to be one of those days where I was being tested on my skills (or lack thereof) all day long. But I’m proud to report that I earned passing grades across the board. It started in the morning with Test One: laundry. I bundled up my dirty clothes in a dirty bath towel and headed downstairs to the washing machine. At first glance, the washing machine looked like a shrunk down version of the one back home. But it was a front load washer and I didn’t know how to put the soap in. And there was a handwritten note about the washing machine posted above it with what appeared to be—obviously—some noteworthy information. So it was back to my room to get my Italian-English dictionary and look up the words one by ... read more

I cannot believe that the first week of school is over and the semester is one-fourth of the way through. But it feels distinctly different from “time flying” back home. There, it makes sense that time would fly: Jam-packed schedules, strict adherence to clocks, multitasking, electronic planners and phones, the dinging chimes of new email… But here, life is so much more serene. Yes, there are things to do and regular times when they are to be accomplished. But all the moments in between are taken up with a certain amount of leisure—or at least with a leisurely approach to accomplishing the tasks at hand. Take gelato, for example. In many ways it is just plain old ice cream. But its consumption is so much different that it turns it into an experience. Back home, ice ... read more

Recently, I have started to reflect on my time here at the CIMBA MBA program in Asolo. I believe coming to CIMBA was the single best decision I've ever made. I took me some time to adjust to the experience. I took my teammates time to adjust as well. I know if I were stuck at the train station in Castelfranco, any of them would come to my rescue. We are not a group of people. We are not classmates. We are a team who supported each other through this CIMBA experience. I don't know where my life will lead me after I leave CIMBA, but I'm not worried. I am currently searching for a job in the Shopper Marketing industry. I haven't found one yet, but I wouldn't be able to start for 6 months ... read more

School is tough. ("If higher eduction was easy, everyone would do it!" - my mother's voice in my head) There is a heavy workload and I’m working on about 5 hrs. of sleep a night. Others in the team sleep less than I do, and I don’t understand how. I no longer take time to exercise, and my room is a disaster area, but I have quit drinking Coke so at least that's something. We just finished Ethics and Law with Nancy Hauseman from the University of Iowa. She was new to CIMBA and gave us 300 pages to read for 2 days of class. WOW!!! Then Molly Rapert, from the University of Arkansas, came to teach the beginning modules of Marketing, which was great because she’s one of my favorite professors ever and she’s from ... read more

Written by my friend Alex on our BusinessWeek Blog. A cultural note: Do the Italians put a lot of garlic in their food? According to some stereotypes and clichés I could say yes, but after one semester at CIMBA I would dare say much less than the Americans do! But is it such a big deal? Well, living at CIMBA and being Italian, which implicates that the food for me (as for all the Italians) is sacred justifies the controversy. At CIMBA we have a very busy schedule the whole time long and in order to maximize our time management, at the beginning of the year we decided to divide us in cooking groups. So basically, in turns, one person has to cook for other 4 or 5 peers. This is actually a great opportunity to ... read more

Skiing at San Maritino Adam arranged the whole thing for us. The night before all of CIMBA MBAs went out for drinks and a nice meal in Treviso. It would be our last time to see on another all together until after Christmas. We didn't get back to CIMBA until after 2am. Adam, Josh, Jenn and I all went to San Marino. Jay had hurt his back a few days before, so he was out. And Lisa really wanted to come, but she was getting sick and wanted to rest up for her trip to London to visit cousins for the holidays. We woke up around 5:30am and went down to the center to meet Adam with the van we rented. The road up the hill to CIMBA is too narrow for the van to go ... read more

Just some fun pictures. All the students are involved in campus teams. The culture, professional, academic, and public relations teams do all kinds of things like arrange for field trips, speakers, tutors, and take care of the CIMBA public image. I am on the professional and PR teams. Our school was recently upgraded from the University of Kansas to the University of Iowa. Our new headquarters wanted some fresh photos for some promotional items. I took the lead and organized some students to take these pictures. Enjoy. I'll be getting out the latest entries asap. I'm getting super busy with school, so I'm a little behind with journaling. You understand.... read more
