Fabulous Florence...we return! It has been a little while since our last visit. Not alot has changed in this grand old city. Home of the Masters of Art! There is a new tram system since we were here last. Much like Nice but on a very small scale compared. Much of a sleep in after Yesterdays' effort...I'm sure we snored the whole five floor apartment awake!! We stocked up our food cupboard yesterday evening, after our arrival, at the Esselunga Supermache which we found not far down the road with the guidance of a local senior citizen who was returning with her Esselunga shopping bag.....you know you are close when you see people carrying supermarket bags. They love to chat...she had to put her bags down so she could chat with her hands.....no hands no chat! ... read more

Gabby is parked up on one of the few campsites open along this particular coast of Italy. The campsite describes itself as camping on the sea , free and well equiped beach, the sea is clean and easy to access . It is set in the heart of a centuries old pine forest which is nature friendly and stimulating whatever that means. It lies in the heart of the Maremma. It has a series of shows running from June to September , animations for the children , a baby club , a fun environment and its own church . All you can come to hate in a campsite . All we wanted was somewhere out of the way where we could cool down and chill out. It is an ACSI site open until the middle of ... read more

Gabby the motorhome is parked up alongside the road , opposite the fire station with a few other cars and one other motorhome. It is not a proper motorhome stop . We have just chosen it as it is within walking distance of what is described as a lovely hill town in Tuscany and it is a place where we can have a bit of lunch. That is one of the beauty of motorhoming you can stop most places discretly ,park up and put the kettle on. You can enjoy your lunch in the peace of your own home on wheels. It takes a while to get back into motorhoming . After a few weeks I now finally remember where everything is . When I first start I open the wrong cupboards , I forget which ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pitigliano October 4th 2019

Is'nt it odd when you want to heap praise on something you often refer to the old marketing slogan of Carlsberg lager ! If Carlsberg made aires - if Carlsberg supported the best football team. Today I thought if Carlsberg made markets then Pitigliano had to win the award hands down. It reminded me of markets we used to have back home in the 50's and 60's . Dad used to take me to the cattle markets and then into what were massive markets full of stalls selling anything and everything you had need for. Trying to park in Pitigliano was difficult . We had to try to squeeze through hundreds of Italian cars parked at odd angles to the road. Doors opening all the time and families falling out into the road . Three or ... read more

Gabby the motorhome is sitting on an almost empty car park outside of Camping Citta Bologna. We have been here before many times. Each time we get lost and miss the turning. Sometimes we pass the ladies of the night in broad daylight displaying their wares . Today we came a different way. We missed the turning but eventually after negotiating the one way system we finally managed to find the campsite. It looked almost empty. There was a reason as I was soon to find out. Our drive had been marred by heavy rain . It was still muggy and the work of fiction admits the rain will be short lived and the sunny weather will return. Last time we were here we bumped into an owner of a Globecar - discussed its merits and ... read more

Pisa...I have been here once, but just couldn't resist coming back. Now, if you’re looking for a lot to do, this may not be your thing. Of course there is the tower, and some other beautiful structures. but for me, it was the experience of going to the top of the freaking Leaning Tower of Pisa! I arrived, and after a little time finding my hotel, I headed into the main area where most all the tourists attractions are. From the distance I could see the leaning tower of Pisa, and my excitement was all over me. I had booked a tour of the town of Pisa, and this took me in some of the buildings and structures with the last stop going yo the top of the tower. I went into…..and learned the history as ... read more

Day 15 : Friday 20 September 2019 : Florence to Pisa to Vernazza Off we head on the train (AUD102 prebooked) to the Cinque Terre with a stop at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Getting on the train was the most difficult as we didn’t know if we had to get our tickets validated. Started to worry, but its too easy if you’re tickets are pre purchased. Just walk on through and find the platform. We get off at Pisa (yay – the correct stop) and head to the Leaning Tower. Dumped our baggage at the station drop point (€20) and headed off, quite a walk but glad we went and saw it, we were so close. It’s really quite cool to see. Heaps of photos….yes you have to push it over in a photo. Head ... read more

All the tours we had organised have now finished so today is a day for relaxing around the villa and the village of Bucine. Shelley and I walked into the village, through the vineyards surrounding the villa. Harvest time is next month (October) so all the grapevines are loaded with bunches of dark purple grapes. The afternoon was spend reading by the pool, chatting and having a spa in the spa room which has big sliding doors looking across the valley. Our villa host Jois (pronounced Joyce) offers the option of a dinner here at the villa, cooked by his cleaner/chef Maria. We all decided it would be a nice thing to have a group dinner so chose tonight as the best night. We were given a large menu, from which to choose either 1 or ... read more

Day 14 : Thursday 19 September 2019 : Florence We were slack, we talked about taking the train to Lucca and also about doing a bike tour from the countryside in Fiesole down into Florence, but we had to work out how to get there. We didn’t do anything so instead we headed off to Piazza Michaelangelo for the views, had a cruisy day, found a great tiny tiny wine bar and then Graham visited the Academia Museum whilst us girls went looking at jewellery. Although it was a good day, kind of feel like we wasted it a little because we didn’t make a decision, won’t make that mistake again, although it really was a nice day. Decide to head back to the Mercato market for dinner, look around at the shops and try the ... read more

Today was another 8:30am pickup from our villa in Bucine for our visit to the hilltop towns of Siena and San Gimignano. Both have a lot of buildings made of red brick, a characteristic of medieval (rather than Renaissance) towns. Siena is a university town with a university hospital doing a lot of oncology research. The town was built on the Via Cassia, the second oldest Roman road built by the Cassius. As we were driving into the city centre, we saw it was market day so we stopped for an hour to have a coffee, look at the Basilica Cateriniana di San Dominico and then mooch around the markets for a while. These were local markets, so as well as the usual tourist souvenir junk, they had everything for the locals like underwear, clothes, jeans, ... read more
