THE ABSENCE OF INSTANT GRATIFICATION IN ITALIAN SOCIETY For me, the way food is served at the McDonald's at Pisa train station represents the society I grew up in and university life. Opportunities seemed readily available as is food on the Mcdonalds menu, we didn't have to wait so long to achieve the things we wanted in life and society imposed few limits on our lives. And when we did achieve, we achieved big things. I think for our generation very little felt outside of our possibilities when we were aged under 25. Here in Italy, the society seems very different to how it is in the UK, in that, it imposes limits and like Italian food, its possibilities are delivered bit by bit, slowly and in small portions like Italian food, which is of course, ... read more

OLD HABITS I almost always visit Empoli when I need to go to Florence from Pisa by train. I take the same regional train routes (Florence to Pisa) and (Pisa to Florence) Mainly, I visit my bank in Empoli called Banca Cambiano which ever since the first lockdown happened, has had a disordered queue of customers outside. The conversation always remains lively outside the bank as every new person who joins the queue has to ask ' who is the last one' or ' chi e l'ultimo?' because it is never obvious as to where the queue ends, and sometimes where it begins. Queues in a straight line, anywhere in Italy seem to be very rare, based on my experience. This always brings a new person into the conversation, which usually begins in the same way ... read more

During the last three visits to the Questura in Florence I've seen the same British people at the Questura, and whilst waiting for our appointments we have long conversations about our individual situations and the impact Brexit is having on our lives. The couple I see often are now having to drive their British car back to Britain to sell it as it is now illegal to drive a British car in Italy without Italian license plates and nobody here will buy a right hand drive. But the Italian government unlike other European governments haven't finished the administration for it. The couple will need to buy an Italian car. ... read more

OLD TUSCANY HABITS I visited Giardino Scotto where I could work on a table in the shade. This time students from the Pisan theater were rehearsing dance routines and in a week or so the same outdoor venue will become an outdoor cinema in the evening. I always visit Eurospin which is a low cost supermarket chain but I find the quality of the food is much higher than such supermarkets such as the coop, for example. I nearly always eat a Pizza Margherita at Moise pizza place when I come back to Pisa. It still remains my favourite pizza so much so that even my friend Francesco didnt get me to eat it with Bufala cheese. I'll only eat the original Margherita! ... read more

On Monday I went round to my ex-colleague Jackie's house in Empoli and had two cups of instant coffee which I've not tasted in months now. They were the best! We caught up on everything since we met in September by chance at the Bagni degli Americani beach in Pisa last year. ... read more

I stayed in a new place called the Train station hostel, which was so pleasant to stay in and conveniently located that I extended my trip in Pisa. I met my ex flatmate who I had lived with in Il Merlo from February to May. His name is Francesco, and it's the first time we've met outside of our accomodation before, mainly because we were not allowed to during the restrictions and everything was closed. We met up at a Pizza place. It was his suggestion, and a great choice. Then we had ice cream in another place and I had a coffee. I cycled from Pisa centre out to the coast at Tirrenia, which is a flat path passing through beautiful fields, allotments, and farmland. I cycle through it every season of the year and ... read more

These are all things I call home. I have to call somewhere home now that I've fully accepted that I no longer have contact with my family. Ristorante Galileo with its 5 courses of food included in the day menu represents my Grandma as I used to enjoy her food. The rock I found replaces my friends Kat and Jess back in Leeds until I can get back there to visit them, as they've been in my life for almost all of my existence. Giardino Scotto with its lush green lawns represents my mum's garden whilst I can no longer enjoy the garden in the family home. It helps me to come to terms with the future when I think like this. I have to love these places as it gives me security. These natural places ... read more

After an evening walking around, we stopped and had drinks just outside the Duomo. It was fun to bask in the moonlight at a small outdoor café. Before hitting Florence, we thought we’d spend a couple of hours in Pisa. Pisa was only an addition when we knew we’d have grandkids along. Dale and I were above the tourist trap thing. From our apartment in Florence, we were able to walk to the train station in about 5 – 10 min. We hopped the train and an hour later we were in Pisa. We tried to follow the Rick Steves walk but kept getting lost. Finally, we made it to the Leaning Tower missing most of what we were supposed to see. What a tower, it really leans, like it looks like it is going to ... read more

I believe very strongly that good weather plays a major role in achieving good health, and as the winter roars on here in Italy, and the nights get shorter and the days get longer I feel healthier and healthier. The pandemic is still a concern for me but as I enjoy the nice climate accompanied by high quality food, somehow it forces the pandemic far back into the background of my mind and thrusts the many opportunities of outdoor life (such as cycling, outdoor gyms, photography, looking out to sea) into sharp focus. Like this, the pandemic then becomes one of the many things to be aware of, whilst I fit in preventative measures against it, around my outdoor life and exercise, as opposed to seeing the pandemic as an out of control evil which imprisons ... read more
