This Palazzo was built on what were the outer limits of the medieval city as the Corsini family’s weekend retreat. Hence it has extensive gardens still used and visited today. We were lucky that our visit to Florence coincided with the annual four day Artisan festival. Former stables and out buildings house local artisans working at their craft. Jewellers, silver smiths, wood turners, glass makers, shoemakers, potters, designers of all sorts show off their wares. The sun shone and it was quite warm in the beautiful formal gardens filled with the scent of the flowering Linden trees and stylish Florentines, both men and women. Tonight we’re going to the opening of an exhibition of Australian (!) prints at a gallery along near Il Bisonte. It opens at 6pm. The guy said “This is Italy. Don’t come ... read more

Ian thought of that title! The Pitti Palace it was today, for Bev and me. Umbrellas and puffer jackets were needed this morning. Fortunately the palace is only about 200 metres up the road. We’re real locals now. We took the rubbish and dropped it off at the community bins on the way. An austere, brutalist-looking palace belies the treasures within. Surprisingly it was designed by Brunellesschi, he of the Duomo’s magnificent dome. The sun on it at sunset lightened it a bit. Armed with our new Friends of the Uffizi card we got our tickets and were straight in, starting with the Grand Duke’s Treasury. Before we could look at them though, we were very impressed with the wall paintings in the reception rooms and at how perspective was used to show features such false ... read more

As I write this, at 5.30pm, the bells from our local church Santa Felicita, about 20 metres away, are ringing, reminding us of how close we are to everything in Florence. Our apartment is hidden away behind a large arched doorway, through a sort of garage housing a Fiat Bambina covered in the Italian flag, and into our private courtyard. It is so quiet we forget about the hustle and bustle of the street outside. We are well settled in for our nearly 3 week stay. We’ve stocked up from the supermarket just round the corner, the phone has a local SIM card, the bus pass is purchased as are our tickets for the garden festival at Palazzo Corsini al Prato, as well as our Friends of the Uffizzi card which will get us into, at ... read more

Armed with our trusty Lonely Planet in both print and digital form, plus a local phone with Google maps, Bev and I are off to explore the sights of Florence. We have a very long list and and 19 days might not be enough to see them all! Ian of course is going to be very busy every day doing his printmaking course. Our apartment, Corte Dragomanni, is very close to the south side of the Ponte Vecchio. It's under the raised Vasari Corridor which was built by Cosimo Medici in 1565 so he could go from the administrative centre at Palazzo Vecchio to his residence at the Pitti Palace without having to walk amongst the people. I have looked at it on Google Earth, 'walked' up and down Via de' Guicciardini but I can't see ... read more

Florence today - the hotel screwed us over because we're a school group and moved our breakfast from 7am to 7h50... but it worked out in terms of even though they lost some free time in the morning, they still had 6hrs in the afternoon so like... that works. Omg the "eggs" at breakfast were the most questionable thing I've ever seen. And they messed up all our rooms so we had kids literally all over the hotel. Major fails compared to all the other hotels we've stayed at on this trip. ANYWAY. We drove into town and went up to Piazzale Michaelangelo for a beautiful viewpoint of the city. Two of the teachers are in a band and have a gig the night after we get back - so they did a promo video and ... read more

I got up bright and early in Venice, was pleased to watch a very Venetian sunrise over the rooftops from my windows. I even managed a video call to Australia over breakfast. Then it was time for my case to navigate the four flights of stairs down to ground level followed by five bridges before I got to the station. On the way, I even saw a police boat with sirens going and lights flashing. I stopped on the bridge I was on a filmed it of course! As the train was Venice to Rome, the train was already there when I got there about 15 minutes before it was due to leave. I was rapt with my seat. Number 3 seat is by itself so there was space next to me for my case and ... read more

For those of you who may have seen a small brown horse crop up in my blogs, I thought I had better explain. I first met Horsey about 6 years ago. He has a human family, although if anyone is travelling and would like to take the little guy with them, they are most welcome (as long as he is looked after). He has a facebook page, his full name is Horsey Travels. This is my fourth trip with Horsey. The first trip with Horsey was 2014 when we (my daughter and I) took on the Spirit of Tasmanina across Bass Strait for a 5 day trip of Tasmania. 2015, my daughter and I took him on a 7 day cruise on the Carnival Spirit to Noumea and Isle of Pines, New Caledonia. We also managed ... read more
