This morning we said "Goodbye" to Rome, climbed on our bus and headed north toward and then Florence. Assisi, the home of St. Francis, was our first stop. We walked through the town which was perched on a hill with steps heading up and down from the main road. It is the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order in the town in 1208. Assisi is the home of many churches including The Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi and Basilica of Santa Chiara. After a thorough tour of St. Francis Basilica we were on our own for lunch and ate at a small lunch truck off the main area. Following lunch we returned to our bus and traveled to Florence. We arrived in Florence late in the afternoon and with no activity planned ... read more

After a better night sleep for both of us, we were up and had breakfast in our apartment. We had bought some lovely fruit and yoghurt and also a baguette which we still had some cheese from Rome to eat with. I found the right coffee for the coffee device and heated up some milk to make myself a flat white (the Italians call this cappuccino). We then walked in towards the Duomo as we decided we wanted to at least go inside but at best walk up the Duomo so would see if that was possible. Firstly Janine wanted to sort oit her molbile phone at the Vodafone shop as she wanted to confirm just what she could use. After this we walked to the Duomo and spoke to someone that was selling tickets for ... read more

Janine and I both had a sleep interrupted night but can't explain why! Anyway, regardless we were up and getting sorted as we had our tour of the Tuscan Wine region today. Had a nice breakfast as figured we should ensure we don't join this tour on an empty stomach! We walked to the S M Novella train station to meet up with our group at 10am. There were 8 other people in the tour group so a good number. It was extremely hot today so we weren't happy when we found out the the air conditioning at the back of the mini van wasn't working! And guess who sat on the back seat? Yep, Janine and I - but we only found out it wasn't working after we got into that seat haha. We were ... read more

I woke around around 7:30 this morning so I could spend sometime on updating my blog. By 9 both Janine and I were up and after we had showers etc. we ventured out in search of breakfast. The first couple of places didn't appeal much but the third one seemed to have just what we needed. We both had a half toasted sandwich each with freshly squeezed orange juice. I had a cappuccino and Janine had a black tea. Very nice! We headed back to the apartment to finish packing and then checked out at 11:30am. We walked to the Metro stop near the Colosseum, stopping at the supermarket to pick up a fresh baguette and a bit more prosciutto. It was another hot, hot day today so we took our time. We bought our tickets ... read more

Today we have to say good bye to The Splendid Hotel and head out to Pisa and the famous leaning tower. On the way we learned that the tower was poorly designed from the start. First the ground was insecure. Some of the property was wet and some dry leading to a poor choice of location, but since the tower was designed as the bell tower for the church, location was not optional. So, they drained the water and began building. The first two rings of the tower were good, all level. Next came the third tier and they noticed it was leaning a little so they stopped construction. After some tinkering, they decided to continue the construction, but they made the columns on one side of the building larger than the other, hoping to straighten ... read more

June 6, 2018 Today we sang our 2nd concert, but before I get to that I'll talk about what we did in the morning. We had a tour of the Uffizi Museum. From Wikipedia: The Uffizi Gallery (Italian: Galleria degli Uffizi, pronounced ) is a prominent art museum located adjacent to the Piazza della Signoria in the Historic Centre of Florence in the region of Tuscany, Italy. One of the most important Italian museums, and the most visited, it is also one of the largest and best known in the world, and holds a col... read more

June 5, 2018 We had wine in the hotel bar last night to celebrate our wonderful concert, and getting up today was difficult. Another rehearsal today - from 0930 to 1330. It was grueling but we got through it and I feel much better about performing the Rossini piece. Brad Ellingboe did half the rehearsal and Peter Tiboris did the other half. It's difficult to get used to different methods of conducting from different people, and Peter Tiboris is not positive & encouraging like our other directors. I had lunch with Barb & Ernie at a small place down the street from our hotel. Then we had a walking tour to the Pitti Palace & Museum. Thing always seem so slow and disorganized with everything we do. This also applies to the disorganization for 'Line up ... read more

June 4, 2018 I had free time this morning so I joined people from the Florida choir on a golfcart tour - which is exactly what it sounds like. They put 4 people on a golfcart and drive you around Florence with a narration of the sights. Quite enjoyable. Next we had a tour of the Santa Croce church at 14:00 (where we are performing tonight). Galileo, Michaelangelo, and Rossini are buried here. From Wikipedia: The Basilica is the largest Franciscan church in the world. Its most notable features are its sixteen chapels, many of them decorated with frescoes by Giotto and his pupils, and its tombs and cenotaphs. Legend says that Santa Croce was founded by url=https://... read more

June 3, 2018 We had free time in the morning so Nancy, Diana, Mike & I walked to the Ponte Vechhio and then to Boboli Gardens. We entered at the far end (based on our walking route) and found out it was free on Sunday. We walked the length of the park and had a beautiful view of the city, then walked back anticipating a panini from the small place right next to our hotel. It was closed! I ended up at a place with a HUGE calzone. We had rehearsal from 1-4 in a room that was terrible for a choir rehearsal. We practiced Rutter for 2 hours and Rossini for 1 hour. Bradley Ellingboe led our Rossini rehearsal (we sang his Requiem in April). I had dinner with Nancy, Anita, and Dave, and then ... read more
