Here we are for our next romantic stop, I name Florence. We spent a last night in Venice...out of the bus from Cortina late afternoon, and next morning on the train to Florence. So last easy local dinner in Venice before our next stop. The train ride is short of three hours and we were staying next to the train station for our last night in Venice. So here we are in sunny and much warmer Florence. Last time I took the train from Venice to Florence was back in 1996 and it took forever. Very different story this time, they even come around with some complimentary snacks....but no bubbles! Our new crib is the super classy St Regis. Let's not comment too much on the super suite upgrade. We have the place to ourselves and ... read more

Wednesday Eric and I took off on Air France with a brief stop in Paris on our way to Florence, Italy. Five minutes into the drive to the airport, I got an alert on my phone saying our flight was delayed 4 hours, so we went back home. We were going to miss the second leg of our trip, so I nervously waited for everything to be rearranged and rebooked, and fortunately it was all smoothed out in time. The flight and stop were uneventful, though Paris CDG airport was under construction and we felt very rushed going through security a second time and making our way to the other concourse. The Thursday midday landing in Florence was extremely abrupt, and I overheard the flight attendant mention to a mother with small children that the runway ... read more

Finalité, comme j'étais français, j'ai eu 6 ... read more

During the last three visits to the Questura in Florence I've seen the same British people at the Questura, and whilst waiting for our appointments we have long conversations about our individual situations and the impact Brexit is having on our lives. The couple I see often are now having to drive their British car back to Britain to sell it as it is now illegal to drive a British car in Italy without Italian license plates and nobody here will buy a right hand drive. But the Italian government unlike other European governments haven't finished the administration for it. The couple will need to buy an Italian car. ... read more

After an evening walking around, we stopped and had drinks just outside the Duomo. It was fun to bask in the moonlight at a small outdoor café. Before hitting Florence, we thought we’d spend a couple of hours in Pisa. Pisa was only an addition when we knew we’d have grandkids along. Dale and I were above the tourist trap thing. From our apartment in Florence, we were able to walk to the train station in about 5 – 10 min. We hopped the train and an hour later we were in Pisa. We tried to follow the Rick Steves walk but kept getting lost. Finally, we made it to the Leaning Tower missing most of what we were supposed to see. What a tower, it really leans, like it looks like it is going to ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 8th February - Palazzo Vecchio & Ponte Vecchio Another visit to Florence, this time we started our tour at Piazza Della Signoria an L-shaped square in front of the Palazzo Vecchio (Town Hall)and the gateway to the Uffizi Gallery. The last time I was here was back a few years ago and we sat with friends in the square and enjoyed strawberries and cream in the sunshine. The Town Hall is among the most impressive town halls of Tuscany, overlooking the square with its copy of Michaelangelo’s David statue as well the gallery of statues in the adjacent Loggia with its open-air sculpture gallery of antique and Renaissance art. Another feature is the beautiful fountain of Neptune, the statue is also known as the Biancone (great white) on account of the brilliance of its marble. ... read more

Hello everyone, this was part of a 3 month trip through Europe. We started in Venice and ended up in London. We started these blogs after we had already been to Australia, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Canada. We couldn't upload photos very well (if at all) and mostly just wanted to be able to remember all of our trips. Everyone once in a while someone calls me and asks questions about our travels and I'm always excited to relive them and share our experiences in hopes it will make their trip better. When we first started on these long trips we didn't interact with locals as much as I wish we had. As we got more comfortable being gone 1-2-3-4 months at a time, we also slowed down and savored visiting and sharing a lot more. ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 5th February- Florence We started our virtual tour today in a place I recognised from all those years ago when I used to visit Florence on business. Although I remember the statue I remember just as much the market where I would often purchase a nice leather handbag or some beautiful gloves which I still gave today. Il Porcellino, as the Italians call him, means “the little pig”. However the bronze statue sitting at the side of the New Market (Mercato Nuovo) is really a wild boar, or cinghiale in Italian. He supposedly brings good luck when visitors rub his snout and put a coin in his mouth. If the water washes the coin from the pig’s mouth and it falls into the grate below, you will have good luck and you will be sure ... read more

Florence was beautiful without tourists and it was really nice to be able to pick out the florentines as they were the only visible group of people in Florence, as there were no tourists. I could also admire the buildings and take clearer photos than I had been able to over the last 3 years, before the general lockdown came into force and flights from Asia and the US arriving into Italy were banned, which saw a huge drop in tourism to Florence. I arrived in Santa Maria Novella station, walked past the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, then towards Piazza del Duomo, then towards Piazza Della Signoria and on to Ponte Vecchio, where I took several photos of the river Arno. The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is probably the church I passed by most ... read more
